Rating: Summary: The Testament Review: I tried to save this book for a 5 hour plane ride, but once I started I could not resist it. I actually forced myself to stop reading it for one day, but it was like being Nate with a bottle sitting next to me. It is refreshing to know that Grisham does not disappoint, even after all this time. What is depressing is the task of finding an equally gripping book for that plane ride. Highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: The Most Enjoyable Grisham Since ¿A Time to Kill¿ Review: In "The Testament", we have an obscenely wealthy businessman committing suicide after devising the perfect plan to vengefully deprive a flock of vulture-like heirs from inheriting his $11 billion estate. Rather, he leaves it all to an illegitimate daughter working as a missionary to the Indians in the remote outback of Brazil. Our hero, Nate, is a burned-out lawyer just out of alcohol rehab sent to find the will's sole beneficiary. Even though she doesn't want the money, he returns to the States to defend her interests against those of the money-desperate ex-heirs and their just-as-greedy lawyers, probably the largest school of razor-toothed sharks ever encountered in a single volume.Suffice it to say that Nate is one of the most appealing characters conjured by Grisham in a long time. By the end of the book, he finds professional, spiritual and emotional redemption stemming from his surprisingly brief encounter with Rachel, the elusive missionary daughter, and a somewhat longer bout with dengue fever. That, in itself, makes this story worth reading. The fact that the truly avaricious get their comeuppance is frosting on the cake. A delicious read!
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing Review: I was really disappointed - none of the trademark Grisham character development, courtroom drama or story development. Don't bother with this one - save your money.
Rating: Summary: Very Good Read Review: I was discouraged from purchasing the book earlier on by some reviews posted here that stated it was not up to his usual standards. After reading the book, I disagree. The setting in Brazil is a little unusual for Grisham, but that is a good thing for the author. Just like all of the Grisham books, I was unable to put this one down. He has a knack of keeping the novel flowing rapidly and your interest hightned. The characters are well-developed and the ending is a real surprise!
Rating: Summary: Never a boring moment Review: The suspense start right at the very beginnig. The first chapter is a audience grabber and the rest just gets more interesting. The middle is full of adventure just when you think the book is done throwing out intense moments it hits you with another. Not only does it leave you on the edge of your seat it warm your heart all at the same time. The ending in the most shocking part of all. The only way the find out what happens is to read the book.
Rating: Summary: The Testament Review: I am glad to see that John Grisham is heading into the spiritual realm. We all think about spritirual things and whether we beleive there is a God or not, I was glad to see how John Grisham wove a missionary into the story and shared some Christian beliefs in the book. Good job John, do not stop writing this way.
Rating: Summary: One oh his best Review: Although it may not stand too well up against The Street Lawyer, The Testiment holds its ground very well on its own.A very gripping novel, and spiritual experience. A bit different than most of Grisham's other work; this book spent most of its time out in the jungles of Brazil, as opposed to in a court room. A strong story, a gripping story, and a wonderful job. Buy the book.
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! Review: Amazing Book! Could not put it down! Great plot and KILLER ending! I highly suggest you read this book. It is unforgetable!
Rating: Summary: All-time great first chapter-rest of the book interesting Review: Stunningly gripping beginning to an interesting book. Characters seem drawn to be all bad or all good with exception of Nate (main lawyer) who seeks redemption for his many sins. A good read but more complex characters would have made it better.
Rating: Summary: Again and again, Mr. Grisham does it Review: There is always something very special about opening a new book by John Grisham. He has this "magic touch" to dig out subjects to a legal thriller nobody can imagine. The Testament is a great example. A crazy old man, greedy relatives, a drunk burntout lawyer and 11 Billion USD, this book has it all. Ok, it seems like Im writing for the publisher, b.c. the plot seems a little thin at the beginning, BUT...Grisham is the master of storytelling, and he makes even a dullest matter interesting, simply by putting his pen on the paper. This is certanly a must read for all thriller fans.
