Rating: Summary: A riveting story of a man's struggle against the world Review: A deeply thoughtful book on one man trying to find peace and revenge due to the dark nature of humanity. An extremely moving book that forces you to feel Kelly's pain and suffering. Truely a great example of Clancy's gift with plots.
Rating: Summary: Clancy at his best. I felt as if I were there. Review: This was an excellent book and a must read for any Clancy fan or techno thriller enthusiest. As usual I felt as if I were there with Mr. Clark as he went on the hunt through out Baltimore and Vietnam. A great thriller and a definate page turner.
Rating: Summary: A snappy good novel, one of the best. Review: "Without Remorse" is one of Tom Clancys odd novels, to me anyway. Unlike "Red Storm Rising" or "Politika", the book doesn't revole over many characters in the same boat. This book does skip around a lot, but focuses manly on one man, John Kelly. The book, in its basic sense, is about a man who's girlfriend was killed by drug dealers, and he feels he must seek revenge. I liked this book because it had the main character, Kelly, in the minds of the other characters. Some of Clancy's other books have a character that is present in over three of his books as a recuring character. It is nice to have a book that isn't hinged on the end of the world by the Russians or Arabs. It is a tale of lost love, with a hint of military action we have grown to love. "Without Remorse" is an excellent work that gets my approval.
Rating: Summary: Mediocre Effort By The Master Review: Tom Clancy has figured out that the John Clark character is the more interesting character to write about. But this isn't it. This revenge stuff is interesting, but this isn't anywhere near his best work. The part about Clark's girlfriend is dumb.
Rating: Summary: Most action packed Clancy book to date! Review: This book is pretty packed with action and suspense. This time at a personal level since nothing more or less than two or three dozen lives are at stake here. (The POWs, the drug-courier girls and Kelly and close associates) In some ways 'Without Remorse' is one of Clancy's best books, going deep into the psyche of John Kelly, who, when faced with danger, reacts in a way he was trained to : cold-blooded relentless violence/killing. For Kelly it's automatic, foes have to be neutralized. He thought himself safe from the jungle over in the Far East only to discover the 'jungle' at his doorstep. So he applies the same rules of engagement he was taught to use in Vietnam. What is OK about this book is the action and the personal element. What lacks is the absence or at least scarcity of ambivalence in regard to comments on killing people, taking justice into one's own hands, portray of Vietnamese people and soldiers, portray of American soldiers etc. This book is pretty much polarized, good vs. evil and such stuff. One could overlook the shades of grey, they are there, though not prominent enough in my opinion. In many ways this book reads like an old John Wayne movie, it's heroic and unreflected or at least one-sided. I enjoyed it pretty much none the less. It gives insight into the beginnings of the career of Mr.Clark, field operative par excellence in so many a Clancy novel. Therefore a must read for any serious Tom Clancy & Jack ryan fan.
Rating: Summary: A Different Clancy Review: Yes, Clancy does write about different characters than Jack Ryan. This story was one I couldn't put down until I got to the end. Sat down with the book one Saturday morning and read it cover to cover. The hero is a little tougher than Ryan, and definitely not someone to fool with. But it's still the same old Clancy weaving his web.
Rating: Summary: Ahhh...revenge, Clancy's best Review: An awesome tale of justice the way it was meant to be. This story is a healthy departure from the clean-cut life of Jack Ryan depicted in most of the early Clancy books. This story is more personal and reveals a baser, more realistic side of a man who has the power to avenge a terrible loss.
Rating: Summary: Another clancy masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: John Clark is everything the average american man wants to be. He is human with real life rationale and feelings, but he does'nt allow the fear of consequences slow his response to what he knows he must do. A very well thought out and planned out masterpiece. A must for all!
Rating: Summary: Justice or Insanity? Review: If you have ever been bullied and wanted revenge, wanted sweet, brutal revenge, wanted to have your tormentors bruised and bloodied and begging for mercy, then this is the book for you. John Kelly is one of those archetypical Hollywood American heroes--the quiet, honorable soldier who, when pushed, is capable of doling out large doses of mayhem. I liked the book, honest. But I think Clancy missed a chance to plumb a deeper emotional well and show what a man in his situation would endure. You have a man who has gone through a truly horrible experience, the death of his wife and unborn child. I don't want to say Clancy glossed over that tragedy, but his wife's death didn't create the same kind of anguish that Pam's death does. That anguish leads Kelly to begin what amounts to a serial murder spree. Now, sure, these guys "deserved" to die. They were drug dealers, pushers, scum, etc, and the world isn't worse off now that they're no longer breathing. But...you just don't go around whacking people you hate, no matter what they did to deserve it. Or, if you do, it should be treated with much more depth and sophistication than Clancy does in this book. Did I root for Kelly to waste the bad guys and gain his revenge? Yup. But there should have more consequences for his actions. The title of the book is "Without Remorse", and that troubled me. Have I ever fantasized about being a highly trained killer and deftly disposing of that bully in junior high who always punched my in the hallway? You betcha. But I didn't because of the laws of the land, which state that if I do that kinda thing, I go to jail, which is bad. John Kelly gets to act as his own judge, jury, and executioner, and while he has to "die" for his crimes, the book leaves no doubt that we are to consider Kelly a hero, and his acts heroic. Clancy is often criticized for painting characters in stark black and white, and in this book he missed a chance to show a character who is many shades of grey. Kelly/Clark is a "shadowy" character, and should not be characterized simply as one of the good guys. He is a man of honor, a man of action, a man you definitly want on your side, but he's not "good". To call him that is to diminish both Kelly and the book.
