Rating: Summary: Outstanding Book! Review: A very good read. This book was a very good vehicle to bring us Mr. Clark. The drug lords had no idea thar they had met their worst nightmare. He displayed the killing skills that he he obtained in Vietnam and the C.I.A. to gain vengenance. As all Clancy fans know,Mr.Clark came to be one of Jack Ryan's most trusted as well as capable associates. With this book a star was born.
Rating: Summary: Arguably Clancy's finest Review: Casual Tom Clancy fans are aware that the hero of most of his books is Jack Ryan, a Georgetown educated historian turned CIA spook. This story takes place in an earlier time, circa 1969. Ryan only makes a cameo appearance as a Boston College undergrad. The main character in "Without Remorse" is one John Terrance Kelly, aka Mr. Clark. Kelly is a Navy SEAL who has been on an incredible string of bad luck. He loses his pregnant wife in a car accident after returning from Vietnam. During his healing process, he meets a vulnerable young woman who is an drug addict that has escaped her drug lord employers. He helps rehabilitate her only to lose her to these drug lords and, in the process, almost loses his own life. As avid Clancy fans know, Mr. Clark is not someone to cross. His solution is to hunt down the drug lords and eliminate them one by one, but his ambitions are further complicated by his recruitment into the CIA as a special consultant. He is asked to plan and coordinate a rescue mission to release American POW's in Vietnam. The books switches quite flawlessly from plot to plot, and shows Kelly struggling with his two identities: the brave SEAL trying to rescue his military brethren, the other the ruthless executioner ridding himself and his country of drug dealers. The interesting thing about this book is how Clancy voices Kelly's conscience and feelings concerning the killing of these drug lords. Kelly doesn't feel a thing, which leads us to ask ourselves if Kelly is a sympathtic character. The answer to that question is, of course, yes. Kelly is a complicated man. He is quite bright, although he is not college educated. He is a loyal friend, but obviously a very bad enemy. He exhibits such tenderness towards the women in his life, and yet he thinks nothing of the elimination of people he has deemed unworthy of life. I found myself cheering for the man. Of course, there is a violent, climatic ending, written in true Clancy style, which provides the missing pieces as to how Kelly officially became the Mr. Clark Clancy fans know from "Clear and Present Danger" and "The Sum of All Fears". I enjoyed this book. This is arguably the one occasion where Clancy put life into his characters. Often, his creations are too perfect, too educated (Ryan is a PhD, his wife is a MD, etc.). Kelly is a flawed man, but that adds to his appeal and makes this Clancy book the best of his canon.
Rating: Summary: Different from his other books Review: Without remorse is not a high-tech thriller like many of his other books. This one focuses much more on a handful of characters, and is very low-tech. That said, it is my favorite of his works. Clark is my favorite of all of Tom's characters. While some of his other books are, perhaps, more "exciting", this one was much more personal.
Rating: Summary: THIS MAN CAN WRITE? Review: I WAS GOING TO PERU AND NEEDED A LONG BOOK, THICK. I HAD NEVER READ ANY OF CLANCY'S BOOKS BUT HECK, I'D SEEN HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, THE MOVIE, AND IT WASN'T HALF BAD. CLANCY'S POPULAR, A BESTSELLING AUTHOR. HOW FAR WRONG COULD I GO? PRETTY FAR APPARENTLY. WHAT A TURKEY. INFANTLE. THE GRAMMER WAS HORRIBLE. BUT I READ THE GLOWING REVIEWS OF THIS BOOK AND I WONDER, WHAT IS A REVIEW? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? IT WAS THE ONLY BOOK IN MY BAG SO I SLOGGED THROUGH THIS CONSERVATIVE, JUVENILE POT BOILER WONDERING WHICH CHARACTER WAS THE DUMBEST. IT WAS LIKE THEY ALL TOOK STUPID PILLS. IT WOULDN'T HAVE MATTERED IF EVERYBODY DIED IN THE END. I WAS CURIOUS, OFTEN, ABOUT WHO WAS PROOF-READING THIS FIFTH GRADE LEVEL ATTEMPT AT STORY TELLING. WHAT A MESS. IT WENT ON AND ON AND ON. IN CONTRAST, IF I CAN RELATE SOMETHING POSITIVE: J. F. FREEDMAN'S, AGAINST THE WIND, (SAME TYPE OF STORY) WON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
Rating: Summary: Clancy at his best Review: I have read all of Tom Clancy's Books and have come to the conclusion that this is his best book. I have enjoyed all of his books BUT this book grabbed a hold of you and does not let go until the last page. This is a change from his normal books. It ususally takes about the first 100-200 page to get into the story.
Rating: Summary: Unique among Clancy novels Review: This book is a departure from the formula of his previous works like Clear and Present Danger, and Patriot Games. It is a story of revenge taken by Clancy's CIA operative John Clark. We see how Clark came to be who he is in the Jack Ryan novels. This book was fantastic and it is recomended to all as are all of Clancy's novels.
Rating: Summary: one word.......WOW Review: Ok. Any decent Tom Clancy fan knows who Mr. Clark is...but who is he REALLY? I mean Who is he? Where did he come from? Why? How? Huh? Well, this book tells you. The complete background of Mr. Clark, or should I say John Kelly? This is a great book, really. Mr. Clark was my favorite character in most of Clancy's books.....but I couldn't help wondering just WHO he was.....well now i know. This is a must read for ANYONE, ESPECIALLY a Tom Clancy fan, and DEFINATELY for a Mr. Clark fan.
Rating: Summary: Without Remorse - Without Flaw Review: This is one of Clancy's best. Without a doubt the perfect book to introduce you to Clancy's writing style. This is one of his more simplified novels in that he never strays far from the main character. The book is about John Kelly(later known as John Clark) and how he became the CIA's top operative. As far as Clancy novels go this is an easy read. There are very few plot twists and and the list of characters is not overwhelming. If you are new to Clancy this is a must read in order to fully grasp his writing stlye before attempting such novels as Debt of Honor or Executive Order. This is an extremely well written book whose faults are barely worth mentioning. A must read for all Clancy fans.
Rating: Summary: Could've Been Better Review: I thought the book had its moments, but was overall disappointing. I agree with other readers' comments that Clancy ineptness in rendering certain emotions can be downright painful. The resolution of the revenge subplot fizzled. Similarly, the military operation also wound up going nowhere. And curiously, for someone as meticulous as Clancy, I was surprised that he kept referring to the surgeon's wife as a physician. She is a pharmacologist and there's a big difference. I did not find the book as intriguing as I had hoped. The jacket advertises an explanation of why Clark became "a CIA legend," and I think the book fell well short of that goal.
Rating: Summary: This book? THIS IS THE BOOK! Review: Alright, I know that he could have done a little better with the characters, but if you put that aside it was one of the better books Ive read in a long time (and Ive read ALOT of books) If you like a book with alot of plot twists, and interesting concepts, then this is definatly a book for you! I read this bool about a month ago and I can still remember the "ENTIRE" plot line, and that doesnt happen very often. If you want some good reading, then you should definatly read this book!
