Rating: Summary: Learn how to write. Review: It happens to me everytime I pick up the latest Clancy book.. I pick it up, open the page, and Zzzzzz??ZZZ?? I was never able to understand much less read Clany's overly complicated & elongated scentence structure. So no, I haven't read this book, nor will I ever read anything from anyone who doesn't understand the concept of "Flow".My only hope is that Clancy will read the reviews (obviously about how much people hate this book!), and maybe come across my mesage and learn to modify his penmanship so that he can produde more readable, interesting literature. ..sell insurance? wow I never knew he did that. Figures.
Rating: Summary: BORING, UNBELIEVABLE, WASTE OF TIME !!! Review: Tom Clancy - trying to write 21st century swashbuckling and globe-trotting adventure/spy/dramas with his former capabilities - must have been having a VERY bad day when he wrote this stinker of a book! In 'Teeth', Jack Ryan, former Clancy hero, now President, authorizes his OWN SON and NEPHEWS to become paid assasins for a government kill-team that targets 'suspected' 'bad guys' ??? Give me a break! The whole book was so implausible that I had a hard time in grasping the concept -- thinking that surely I was missing out on the IMPORTANT stuff.... and come to find out, there wasn't any of THAT, either! And Lordy, I did get tired of hearing the term 'bad guys' over and over.... couldn't Clancy come up with another pseudonym for the terrorist characters? To make matters even worse, the narrator sounds like he's reading poetry on a dull afternoon - not trying to enliven uninteresting characters and at least differentiate in voices or dialog. And, the narrator also has an annoying habit of ending all his long-winded sentences on a 'downturn' -- sounding like everything had a "Oh, poor thing, it's so sad....sound" -- that might be helpful in reading bedtime stories to not-very-sleepy kids -- but certainly not what was needed for an 'action' story. And the reward for listening through a painful 16 hours of this nonsense? The story just ends.... as our unproven (to me) hero Jack Jr flies off into the blue - supposedly on his way to another adventure. If it's another adventure like this first one, I'll read a paragraph synopsis and feel like I came out ahead. Tom Clancy may have 'hit it big' previously -- but this is a total bust! I only rated it ONE star because there was nothing LESS that would qualify as a rating!
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing Review: I was a great fan of Tom Clancy but his two most recent books (Red Rabbit and The Teeth of the Tiger) are great disappointments. The plots are very slow and weak and the characters far too perfect and flawless. The leads have doubts, sure, but they recover from them far too quickly. Also the action, what there is of it, is lame and slow. I do not intend to buy any more Clancy books.
Rating: Summary: Not the best but not the worst either Review: I'm going to be a rebel and say that overall, I enjoyed this book. However, I figured out about halfway thru it that there would probably be a sequel. I will say that it got a bit mundane when all the cousins were doing was taking out various Arabs with poison. They didn't appear to be challenged at all. I think there is potential for a new series with Jack Jr. and his cousins but this wouldn't be the best way to start it.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I cannot decide whether to read all the way to the end or cut my losses with 100 pages to go. The book is cutesy. It is full of jargon. The characters are ridiculous and unflawed. At least Jack Ryan Sr has a bit of a drinking problem and some stock market ethical issues. Jack Jr seems to be a combination of Richie Rich, Superboy and Jesus. If, like me, you have some irresistable urge to read Clancy's books no matter what, this might be a good time to borrow a friend's or go to the library. That said, Robert Ludlum's last couple were pretty good, so sometimes it pays off to endure a 15 year lousy streak...I'd say we're about 6 years into this one...
Rating: Summary: An insult to Clancy fans Review: This book is bad to the point of being insulting to anyone that has faithfully followed Tom Clancy since "The Hunt for Red October." It troubles me that the end suggests a sequel. Just because the book uses characters that seem to be pulled from the headlines and makes references to events that transpired in the last two years does not make it relevant or useful. Most of the other reviews posted here have addressed the book's main flaws. I will identify two. It is one thing to establish the back-story for a character by making reference to previous events (which, in Clancy's case, are often his earlier books). It is quite another thing to spend entirely too much time in the past. In this case, Jack Jr. either talks or thinks about his father the former President or his mother the surgeon almost every time he is in a scene (and talks about "what Dad would do" or "how Mom would feel"). It is as if Clancy wants to start a new series with Jack Jr., but feels too dependent on the history of Jack Sr. Regardless of the reasons why, it is frustrating and a waste of ink. Even the novice Clancy reader, with no understanding or knowledge of Jack Sr., likely got the point that he used to be the President the third time they were told. They didn't need to be told that 30 more times. Second, there is no such thing as an "ATM machine" yet Clancy (otherwise with an eye towards detail) makes this blunder several times while the twins are in Europe. That mistake is evidence of sloppy writing and sloppy editing. Mr. Clancy, your fans deserve more than this sad effort.
Rating: Summary: Is Clancy loosing his magic touch? Review: This is a very weak thriller, without a good argument. The story does not hold properly together. Tom Clancy must be loosing his touch. It would be better if he could stop for a while to preparare of of manificent stories of the past, but he should not write again such an uninteresting book.
Rating: Summary: Worst Yet from the Once Master Review: "Tiger" is quite simply the worst Clancy novel I've ever read, and looks VERY sick compared to his other Ryan masterpieces culminating in "Bear & Dragon". I'd even put it below some of his "co-written" i.e. ghost-written books. I didn't bother reading Red Rabbit after reading the bad reviews, and I only read this one because I received it as a present. Come on Clancy, you WERE the best at this sort of novel. Come back with a real Jack Ryan Sr. novel worthy of reading, or retire rather than give us this commercially inspired drivel.
Rating: Summary: Clancy panders to the neanderthals of the vigilante right. Review: The premise of this novel really rubbed me the wrong way. For those of us who enjoy Clancy's action writing, there are some good shoot-em-up sequences. But the politics and philosophy that Clancy is spouting in this thriller are way out of line with my view of the world. Do not recommend to Clancy fans or first timers.
