Rating: Summary: Incredibly Crude Propaganda Review: and only half a book at that! For years now every Clancy book has been a sales job, and this book seems to be selling: hatred of Arabs; good feelings about universal wiretapping; and good feelings about systematic assassinations. Clancy also solemnly reassures us: that the CIA has never ever had any capability for assassination (though he admits that it has a covert ops section); that the FBI has never done anything illegal (htough he admits that it has a huge collection of blackmail files); and, best of all, that John Kennedy was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting all by himself. His storytelling skills are pleasant, but maybe a graphic novel would be a better way to reach an audience with the credulity he seems to long for? And this is only half a book - the plot just stops in midair - pretty shoddy.
Rating: Summary: The Teeth of the Tiger Review: A complete disappointment, predictable (even cliché) from start to finish. Have immensely enjoyed many of Clancy's earlier books, but nearing the end of patience w/his more recent attempts. Save your money!
Rating: Summary: TIMELY!!! Review: Has our world, as we knew it in the US, prior to 9/11/01 forever been changed? Some say yes, while others think it has only changed for the interim. How far do we dare go before we have gone too far in regard to preemptive action, as a means of protection? In "The Teeth of the Tiger", Tom Clancy presents a clandestine method of countering terrorist activity by interfering with their line of command and their supporters. Unfortunately, the story ends before we know, on a long-term basis how effective this method was. As in prior Clancy novels, this one also has several groups of people located in various parts of the world. And, we bounce around from location to location as some interactions take place among various groups via email, while others are face-to-face encounters. One of these groups includes Jack Ryan, Jr. (who is all grown up now) and two of his cousins. My greatest criticism of the book is that the ending of the story could have been better. In fact, it could have been much better. Actually, I'm not sure the story ended - but I can't find any more pages.
Rating: Summary: Implausible, preachy, predictable Review: Take the Sear's and Roebuck catalog out of the outhouse and replace it with Mr. Clancy's latest. I had been a long-term fan of Mr. Clancy since "Red Storm Rising" and "Red October". I should have learned after forcing my way into the first 30 pages of "Rainbow Six" that he has "shot his wad". I know how crude it sounds, but this book absolutely stinks. The dialog is wooden, the plot implausible, and the medical/technical data is incorrect. I use the featured drug/poison on a daily basis in my anesthesia practice.
Rating: Summary: Better off as a Short Story Review: A thought provoking book with a good story line. This would have made for a better 30 page short story than a full book. For us Clancy fans, this book is a huge disappointment.
Rating: Summary: not clancy's best Review: I am a clancy fan. This book is his poorest work. It is predictable, implausable, and slow moving. I don't recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Defending a Career Review: When I was a teenager, the first book I actualy bought and read was "The Hunt For Red October". Since then I have been a loyal Clancy fan. So what if his recent work has degenerated into basic plotlines, two dimensional charachters and raciallly tinged right-wing politics ("Joe Chink"? yikes). However, I refuse to admit that Mr. Clancy has, as some people have said "lost it". No artist, no person, can maintain such a creative, successful career without a temporary, TEMPORARY, dry spell. Maybe Clancy has become distracted with his other numurous successes (movies, T.V. shows, video games, spin-off books), maybe he feels the need to placate his new, and probably very influencial, circle of friends. Maybe he has entered a point in his life where the sheer magnitude of his success has given way to the anxiety of just sustaining what he has (a creative abyss that has claimed many an artist). Or maybe he's just out of ideas for the moment. For-the-moment. He would not be the first. Ironically, as a liberal democrat, I'm just the guy to be villified in these recent books. That doesn't bother me. If there's one thing we liberals are known for, it's shutting our eyes to the immediate facts and standing by a cause we believe in. Well, I believe in the writing career of a great American author. Mr. Clancy has not lost this fan! I will be around for his next book and his next one, and his next one. In the words James Carvel, I'm "stickin".
Rating: Summary: Clancy phoned this one in Review: Unlike his earlier works this book lacks any element of surprise or tension. Each of the missions described in this book is a cookie-cutter image of the one before and the one to follow. Both the author and editor should be ashamed of the quality of prose; one chapter opens with, "The sun rose promptly at dawn." This feels like it was written with the intent to go straight to a really bad computer game.
Rating: Summary: The worst Review: This book is by far the worst by Clancy. Very disappointed with the wordiness to fill pages . He did nothing to develop the characters. True waste of the time to read!
Rating: Summary: Give Mr. Clancy a Break!! Review: Do you remember all the words to the Eagles? Rolling Stones? The Beatles? Of course not. They had off moments as artists, why can't a former insurance man with a penchant for detail? Only in America can an artist such as he go from Insurance to whatever kind of Mercedes he wants. Tom Clancy is an American Icon, but also a man who lives in Maryland, is Catholic and happens to be an author. Its perfectly acceptable to me if an author wants to interject some of his own beliefs and politics in his work. I would call that executive privledge of the guy to puts pen to paper or keyboard to computer. As Ronald Regan called him : "a teller of great yarns". That's enough for this Republican. Good Day.
