Rating: Summary: Burke's prose is brilliant Review: When you read a Burke novel, you are there. People and events you never could have encountered become a part of your life. Burke is so good that when he writes about people doing things that don't make any sense, you understand why they're doing what they are: because people don't always make sense. Protagonist Robicheaux is such a believable character that you variously want to smack him upside the head, hug him, or just be there for him. Oh, my, but this man can write! However, I have to say that the only thing better than reading a new Burke novel is having Will Patton read it to you via books on tape. Now, even when I read a Burke novel, it's Patton's voice that I hear in my head.
Rating: Summary: Stellar Review: With a precision writing style reminiscent of McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD and a plot worthy of Leonard's TISHOMINGO BLUES, this latest James Lee Burke does not disappoint. The writing style alone is worth the price of admission, and the plot is a character-driven tour-de-force that builds toward the end--something not every novel does, but should. Set in and around sultry New Orleans, this highly charged tale will take you into the darkest corners of the human mind and heart. I highly recommend this compelling and well written novel.
