Rating: Summary: A DYNAMITE NOVEL Review: Jack Reacher is hitching, in the extreme heat of West Texas, when he is picked up by Carmen Greer. At first sight, Carmen is a good-looking woman, with the kind heart to pick up a strange man, but as the car ride begins, Reacher learns his being picked up was no accident.Carmen has "chosen" Reacher to help her with her problem. Carmen is married to Sloop Greer, a vicous man, serving a prison sentence for a crime Carmen helped put him away for. With only a few days left before Sloop is released, and under the constant watch of Sloop's family, Carmen is desperate for help, and her only solution is to murder her husband, if Reacher will help her. Reacher, not sure what to think of this woman, and her crazy plan, decides to see what Carmen's bitter in-laws are all about. Pretending to be a blacksmith, Reacher joins the Greer clan, to get a better look at what lurks in the Greer house, only to learn Carmen is telling the truth about the murderous family, and the one person at most risk is her young daughter. The deeper Reacher becomes involved, he discovers the crimes and secrets buried in the Greer family's past, and trying to get Carmen and her daughter out may cost all of them their lives. 'Echo Burning' is an action packed page-turner with a plot that twists and turns, and keeps readers guessing right up until the end. As always, with a Reacher novel, the reader is kept wondering what is going on and what will happen next, and then in it's explosive climax everything comes together, leaving us breathless. Lee Child has created a surprising thriller that readers of the series will love, and keep them anxiously awaiting the next novel in the series. All of the Jack Reacher novels have been bestsellers, and 'Echo Burning' will also jump onto the lists, as it deserves to, for it is about the best in the series. Nick Gonnella
Rating: Summary: Fantastic-A one of a kind hero Review: Jack Reacher is always on the move as the former military police officer goes wherever the whim takes him. He never worries about local trouble because he is a big athletic hombre who knows how to take care of himself. Carmen Grant believes that Jack is the perfect person to kill her abusive spouse because he is huge and she believes he feels no remorse. Jack refuses so Carmen murders her husband, claiming self-defense. The district attorney happens to have been the deceased's best friend, and coincidentally happens to find no evidence of spousal abuse, so Jack begins making inquiries. Carmen abruptly confesses and someone kidnaps her daughter, leading Jack to conclude that something is rotten in Echo, Texas. The anti-hero of ECHO BURNING believes in justice more than he accepts the law and is willing to dole out his brand when injustice occurs. Some readers will claim Jack is a desperado or vigilante while others a Robin Hood hero. Regardless, all will agree that his methods work and he only hunts those deserving of his ire. The story line is fascinating and complex with numerous subplots that tie back to the main theme while showing how creative a talent Lee Child is. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Extremely Good! Review: The writing is superb. I've read all the Jack Reacher novels and they just get better and better. This story is suspenseful and keeps you guessing. Reacher is his usual fearless self, someone you definitely want on your side. I love the way his mine works. And Mr Child is one heck of a writer. My heart was racing through some of the scenes, making me feel like I was there. That's good writing. I highly recommend this book, and strongly suggest you go back and read the other novels featuring Jack Reacher. They are all good. That way you will gain some insight into the person Reacher is. Sit back and enjoy because you will not want to put this book down. I can't wait for the next Reacher novel.

Rating: Summary: Keep a cool drink nearby as you read Echo Burning. Review: Lee Child takes the reader into the unbearable heat of Echo, Texas as Jack Reacher tries to help a beautiful woman and her six-year-old daughter. Reacher has to sort through a web of truth, lies, and half-truths. Just when he has everything figured out, all the evidence points to different suspects and motives, and the closer Reacher gets to the truth the more his own life is at stake. Echo Burning is suspenseful from the first page until the spectacular climax. The biggest problem I had with the book was trying to put it down long enough to sleep.
Rating: Summary: Reacher Rides Again!! Review: Lee Child bring his superhuman character Jack Reacher back to life in this fifth book of a series. For those of you who've read the other four books, you already know enough about Child's distinctive writing style to be salivating over this book. For those of you who haven't read the others, I might suggest you read "Killing Floor" or "Tripwire" first, so you can gain perspective on the character of Jack Reacher. This book is a wonderful addition to the series, serving to give further insight into the commitment-fearing brain of Jack none Reacher. A MUST HAVE!!
Rating: Summary: This is my least favorite Review: book so far in Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" series. Jack's a loner, and it is fitting that he's back on the road again after trying unsuccessfully to settle down. He's in hot, dry, west Texas (and Child really makes you feel as though you are there - you're thirsty throughout the story!) where he's enlisted himself to help an abused (?) wife, Carmen Greer, and her daughter, Ellie. Greer's tale is fraught with lies, and, if I were Jack, I would have given up on her. She's not able to escape her husband, Sloop, and his secretive pack of friends that have a past that leads to bloodshed. The pace bogs down from time to time, and it is difficult to root for Carmen. The ending is a lot more transparent than anything Child has given us previously. Worst of all, Child gets bogged down in his own descriptiveness, a problem encountered in his earlier works, where it was more forgiveable and did less to hurt his characterization and his pace. Not giving up on Jack, because he is the most refreshing hero of the past few years, but one more average work by Lee Child will send me scurrying for some new authors!
Rating: Summary: It gets hot in Texas Review: How many times should an author inform the reader that it is hot...I quit counting after the first fifty. What tripe!
Rating: Summary: Reacher metes out justice for abused Latina in great plot! Review: As usual, ex-MP, now civilian, Jack Reacher is drifting about the country when he's picked up by Carmen Greer, a Latina from a wealthy Mexican-American family who marries Sloop Greer, an oil-rich Texan with a horribly racist family. Their little girl, Ellie, herself a brave smart soul, is the slim tie that binds, but almost immediately Carmen winds up being a punching bag for Sloop. After nearly seven years of injuries, several serious enough to require hospitalization (for "falling off a horse"), Carmen rats on Sloop to the IRS and he winds up in the slammer. But days away from release on parole, she realizes the cycle will merely resume, possibly in more deadly ways. She convinces Reacher with her tale of woe to come help her, even though he refuses her request to "execute" the returning Mr. Greer. From there, a complicated plot ensues, made even more complex by a two-man, one-woman team of assassins who first kill some "watchers" (who we thought might be after the little girl themselves), followed in quick succession by the murder of Sloop, ostensibly at the hands of Carmen. Reacher teams up with Alice the attorney to help defend her and decipher the truth, not an easy task. The plot meanders and twists and turns until a rather surprising villain surfaces right near the end and justice is carried out in Old West style.
Lee Child's star Reacher continues to be the lovable and oh so resourceful hero of the four earlier books in this growing set of thrillers. While he is smart enough to solve the most enigmatic investigation, he shrinks not a whit from snapping necks or otherwise dispensing his own brand of "vigilance" to the deserving bad guys and their helpers. That he resists sleeping with Carmen is both admirable and uncharacteristic, leaving us to wonder if he'll maybe take up with her if she ever gets free. Meanwhile, the marvelously suspenseful plot keeps us turning those pages quickly, something we've seen in all the Reacher stories. Child even weaves some interesting thoughts about discrimination into the tale -- Carmen remarks once that she's never even seen Mexico, yet she is treated cruelly as nothing but a "wetback" by most all the story's characters. Why some reviewers felt this novel was a bit off puzzles us -- while we admit to being huge Reacher/Child fans, we felt this story was right up there with the rest, and heartily recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Very Unpredictable Plot and Ending Review: This was my second Lee Child novel featuring his protagonist, Jack Reacher, and I very thorougly enjoyed the story. Jack Reacher,an ex MP from the Army, is a drifter who is hitching a ride in a small rural town in Texas and picked up by a mysterious woman who tells him she's in trouble. The problem is that much of her story does not add up and Reacher, being an ex-cop, becomes suspicious of her.
A very intense novel with many twists and turns throughout much of it. A very enjoyable reading for those who like action packed mysteries.
