Rating: Summary: The Kirkus review said it all--brain dead!! Review: This is simply one of the worst books I have ever read. Slack jawed neandertrals in Montana trying to set up a new nation--where have we heard that one before. Ruby Ridge all over. Reacher is your basic comic book Superman and the villains have everything but horns on their heads. I love the several passages where Child takes about 2 pages to describe the one second life of a bullet from the time the trigger is pulled until the time the bullet splatters the villains brain all overnorthern Montana, including the gases inside the barrel, the effect of the rifling on the bullet, etc.etc.Also the fact that cameras in planes 7 miles up can not only see people on the ground, but recognize their faces. But this technology pales beside the one that allows the FBI lab to take a burned out truck and by scraping mud off the bottom, tell exactly where the truck has been in the US for its entire 7 year life, sort of like looking at the rings in a tree to tell its age. I guess 7 years of rain, slush, cleaning, etc, would have no effect on these mud layers which Child treats pretty much as if they were fingerprints. I realize crime labs are getting better all the time, but GIVE ME A BREAK
Rating: Summary: Cover to cover Review: Lee Child has me hooked. After "The Killing Floor," I felt compelled to read "Die Trying." I'm glad I did. It's a great book, and I love Jack Reacher. The nice guy, who's not like the guy next door. It's a truly interesting story, and I read it from cover to cover, which I rarely do with books. Can't wait for his next, "Tripwire"
Rating: Summary: great movie potential Review: Lee Child sure knows how to write to capture his reader's attention & imagination...I couldn't put the book down & the next thing I knew, I was at the last page & it was 4am in the morning. The premise of the story is exciting and entertaining...so my only complain is the token relationship between the hero and heroine. It is ridiculous & totally redundant. It undercuts the credibility of the female character. In the end, it's like eating a great dinner but for dessert, they serve you a scoop of cheap tasting ice cream... you end up feeling a little unsatisfied.
Rating: Summary: Jack Reacher is the Clint Eastwood of the '90s Review: Although the action begins in the first chapter, there is little familiarity between the reader and the characters. This can cause the first 75 pages to go a bit slowly. However, Child makes up for this in the gradual unfolding of the plot. I must say that I was slightly disappointed with the conclusion, more specifically (w/out giving anything away) - with the way things end up between all the main characters. This was not necessary in order to continue the character of Jack Reacher in future novels. So what if there are a few technical errors in the book. Fiction is just that - FICTION. Enjoyment of the book is clouded by nitpicking over minor discrepencies. I enjoyed this book and must recommend it to all.
Rating: Summary: Worst book I have ever read Review: This is without doubt the worst novel I have ever read. Why I finished reading the book is beyond me. I had to grit my teeth and go for it. Too bad you have to choose a star rating. Zero should be an option. The events in the book had no realism whatever. Just one of many examples: Beau Borken murders a number of people in Montana. There is absolutely no reaction and no knowledge of anyone that these murders took place. No wife, no relations, no friends. No one cares. There is also no characterization. Every character is exactly the same. Each character speaks the same, right? And the complete stretch engaged in by the author to save Jack Reacher from commitment to a woman (undoubtedly to save him for future use) passes the border of ridiculous. The only benefit I received from this book was knowing that I will never read any books by those authors that supposedly gave the book a good review. My copy of the book is now in the trash where it belongs.
Rating: Summary: Sad product by author with great potential. Review: Child has great potential as an action writer but lack of proper research and too many coincidences destroy one's abiltiy go along with the story. Example: Most FBI agents have not carried .38 revolvers with speed loaders in many years. Child needs to either educate himself as to all his facts or have someone who knows law enforcement and military facts edit his work for accuracy. "Die Trying" also had a very weak plot even though well written. He could be a great writer. I will not purchase another of his books until I see strong evidence of improvement.
Rating: Summary: Jack Reacher the Hero of the 21st Century. Review: Die Trying is the sensational sequel to Killing Floor by Lee Child. If you haven't read Killing Floor I would recommend doing so before you read this book as it provides a basis for Reacher's character realism. As before the main character is Jack Reacher, ex military policeman and all round superhero. Reacher is intelligent, deductive and physically prodigous, so if you like heroes of the elite variety then this is the character for you. If you prefer cardiganed librarians and lack the ability to suspend disbelief (an essential criteria for FICTION readers) avoid this book as the storyline is astounding with a capital ASTOUND. Lee Child has produced a book that captivates and ensnares its readers with suspense, intrigue and a plot with more twists than a bowl of particularly tangled spaghetti. A man mountain of a psychopath, a beautiful FBI agent with more secrets than the FBI itself, moles galore and the president of the United States, all come together in the valleys of Montana, in a literary feast. If that isn't enough there's even a spot of romance (but not too much). All in all a book for those of us who believe in a world where heroes do exist.
Rating: Summary: "Killing Floor" was much superior Review: Sophomore slump (of sorts) hits another author. Though the book was an enjoyable read, it just didn't grab you like his first. Though I'd recommend it, I'd recommend "Killing Floor" much higher -- though this one will pale even more in comparison.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books you'll ever read! Review: Once you pick up Die Trying, you won't be able to put it down. Full of suspense and a great story this is the book for everyone. I HIGHLY recommend it. I also recommend anything written by Lee Child. (I can't wait for his next book to come out)
Rating: Summary: If you can go for long periods without breathing... Review: .....THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. Jack Reacher is a hero for the ages! Meet him in Lee Child's THE KILLING FLOOR and get to see his sensitive (and still deadly side) in DIE TRYING. I can not wait for TRIPWIRE (to be released in May 1999) which once again features this memorable character.
