Rating: Summary: Better than the last couple of her books Review: I almost didn't buy this book because I was so disappointed in her last couple of books. This one was better; however, the ending was loose and abrupt. I like her main character, Carley, but felt the character of Casey, Carley's love interest, was not developed well enough to be an integral part of the story. I do feel that Ms Clark did a good job of developing Ned's character, and I even felt compassion for him. I do have to agree with another reviewer regarding writing in the "first person." I generally avoid those as well. It's pretty hard to get caught up in a story when the character is telling you what's happening --- you know they won't die because then they can't tell you what happened next. Oh well! Here's hoping her next book is better.
Rating: Summary: What's happened to MHC? Review: I purchased this new hardback "Second Time Around" by MHC and was really looking forward to the read. MHC, in my opinion, is one of the finest authors of today. I have several of her novels that I've thoroughly enjoyed. She's a very talented lady. BUT, something is amiss with this book. It didn't even sound like the same author at various times in the book. One part would be flowing with extremely well-written prose, and then all of a sudden it was like WOW, where did she go and who's writing this book anyway? The plot wasn't her usual, the writing style definitely wasn't up to her usual, and I thought her characters were weak. None of this is like the MHC I've read before. Guess we all have bad days and good days. Better luck with the next one, Mary.
Rating: Summary: This is not the old Mary Higgins Clark Review: I have read all of her books and found her to be an excellent writer, especially her earlier books. But this new novel of hers is boring and repetative. It was a type of a story that you kept reading hoping that the ending would be spectacular. But sorry to say it was just as dull as the rest of the book. If you are MHC fan, expect to be disappointed
Rating: Summary: Good Read Review: Mary Higgins Clark has done it again with this subtle mystery. Carley DeCarlo is young, sensitive, and ambitious. Her stepsister, Lynn, is conniving, manipulative, and cold. The sinister Ned Cooper is a scary character and his delusions were realistically portrayed. The only weak character was Carley's boyfriend, Dr. Casey Dillon, who isn't very involved in her life until close to the end of the book. Still, Clark doesn't disappoint and I found this to be a really good read. No wonder she's always a bestseller - her books are still fresh and not as stilted or burned out as other bestsellng authors tend to become.
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointed Review: I have read all of MHC books & was extremely disappointed in this one. The plot was thin, unexciting & often boring. She wrote this one in the Carol Higgins Clark style, not the Mary Higgins Clark style. She is one of the few authors that I automatically buy in hardback as soon as it comes out, but now I will only buy her books in paperback if at all.
Rating: Summary: Second Time Around Review: I am an avid fan of MHC...have read every suspense novel she's ever written. This was my first disappointment. I felt the characters were not developed enough and the plot was very thin. Hope this was the first and last time for this....
Rating: Summary: MH Clark loses a long-time reader Review: I have not read Ms. Clark's last two books because she wrote them in the first person and I do not read novels in the first person. I think that the reader loses the perspective of all but the lead character. Call me odd; you'd probably be correct but I'm so disappointed at this change by Ms. Clark. I'll miss her since I always anxiously awaited her next work. I'll always wonder why she changed. I always say: if it isn't broke; don't fix it!!
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I am a huge Mary Higgins Clark fan and could not wait to read her latest. I should have waited for the paperback. The book was very disappointing. Too many characters to follow. You knew the ending once you first started the book. Very slow moving in parts. And, my own personal preference, is books that are not written in the first person. A disappointed fan.
Rating: Summary: Not one of her best - average Review: As an avid Mary Higgins Clark fan, I was disappointed. The plot was underdeveloped, several relationships - including the one between main character Carly and her love interest - were underdeveloped, and several times I put it down for days at a time. Normally, I read Mary Higgins Clark in one sitting.
Rating: Summary: A Good Plot-Driven Mystery Review: I haven't read a MHC novel in quite some time and I don't know what possessed me to pick up this one. The main character Carley DeCarlo, is a financial advice columnist and finance usually bores me to tears. But there is much more to this story than finance. There is research for a cancer cure, murder, theft, betrayal and stalking. All the things that make for a good juicy tale. It is not exactly an original plot, but MHC is such a good storyteller she makes it seem fresh. She reveals just enough to keep the reader guessing to the end. Carley seemed a little too sweet at times, but believable for the most part. The medical aspects of the story were sometimes vague and imprecise, but that was easy to overlook because the plot was the star of this book and if some of the parts didn't ring true, all can be forgiven for dramatic effect. One of my favorite lines was, "A good night's sleep means that all parts of my brain come awake at the same time". MHC must have been enjoying a morning like that when she came up with the idea for this book. My decision to read this book was a good one. A very enjoyable read.
