Rating: Summary: Second to none! Review: True to Mary Higgins Clark's distinctive writing style, The Second Time Around radiates with breezy, natural dialogue, sparkling descriptive text and an intriguing plot. Being a devoted fan, I've read practically all MHC's books and this one is another winner. At first, I was somewhat disappointed she had used first person point of view for the female protagonist, Carly DeCarlo. However, as I dug into the story, I immediately changed my mind. She did a splendid job typifying the likeable, down to earth Carly's persona intermingling her first person between chapters with the menacing Ned Cooper's third person narrative. Excellent! Carly is an investigative reporter for Wall Street Weekly, assigned to report the mysterious death of Nick Spencer, founder of Gen-Stone--a corporation claiming to have discovered a vaccine to cure cancer. Conspirators, co-conspirators, angry stockholders, a cold devious stepsister, and a psychopath killer all figure in her latest riveting, unpredictable plot filled with twists and turns. Definitely one of Clark's best!
Rating: Summary: okay, but... Review: I am a fan of MHC and have enjoyed reading all of her books, including this one, but I have to admit that it was not one of her best. It was as easy read, but I hadn't gone far into the book and had it already figured out (it may be that I have been reading too many political books lately, trying to figure out what is going on in this country, that I am extra suspicious of everything) early on in the book. Carly's character could have been developed a little more and also that of her doctor boyfriend. Ned's character, a mentally deranged character, was very believable. Carly is an economist turned investigative reporter and is investigating the disappearance of Nicholas Spencer and the money that has been invested in his company, a company trying to develop a cure for cancer. Her step-sister, whom she doesn't really like, is married to him. The house that her step-sister is staying, was set on fire by an angry investor and destroyed. Anne, the step-sister, was in the house at the time and suffered minor injuries. So there is yet another mystery to find out who set the fire and then yet another one, when the police search for the person who has shot several people (actually, we know who did it, but the police don't). The book was okay but could have been sensational with a little more work. As it is, it is just a pleasant read without the after-glow feeling that I usually get when I read one of her books.
Rating: Summary: The book which you must read Review: Very interesting book. One of the best from Mary Higgins Clark. You don't expect such end. Till the end no one knows how it will finish. It gives me the idea to read ALL Mary Higgins Clark books available.
Rating: Summary: Poor writing - and no suspense Review: I made it through the book - thus, I'll give it 2 stars, but the level of writing is simply unforgivable for a woman of MHC's talent. Maybe she is just out of touch, but the "slacks" outfit descriptions alone are enough to undermine the reader's belief in the main character as a real person. This book never scares you the way the vintage MHC books did, and even when the slightly less obvious villains emerged, I felt nothing. The reviewer who felt like this was a "Murder, She Wrote" plot was dead on.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed in MHC Review: Like one of the previous reviewers I checked the book jacket twice to make sure I was reading a Mary Higgins Clark book. I have read everything she has ever written, which is why I read this book, even though it was written mostly in first person form. I should have saved myself the time. I am use to her main male and female characters having chemistry and being so well written about that I feel as if I know them by the end of the book. No so here.
Rating: Summary: Carol Higgins Clark? Review: This book is so badly written and ill plotted that I turned to the cover and flyleaf twice to be sure it wasn't co-written by MHC's daughter. For example, how many times must the author describe Carley's outfits as "having been bought at an end of the season sale"? The "feel good" ending was over the top. If MHC truly wrote every word of this one, she needs to take a breather and spend time in developing a story, plot and characters with some originality. She is becoming a her own mimic.
Rating: Summary: Not her best Review: I have read every book Ms. Clark has written & I have loved everyone of them but "The Second Time Around" is not her best. It is a good story & parts of it keeps you on the edge of your seat but other parts of it are really slow. But the ending is great. So do buy it & do read it. It is a good book.
Rating: Summary: MHC Needs to take a break Review: This was the most boring MHC book to date. I thought I would NEVER get it finished. I guess she is running out of ideas, either that or retire!!
Rating: Summary: Was the Vaccine Really A Scam? Read and Find Out! Review: This book was okay thought not the very best of Clark. As I read, it kept me wondering what was really going on there.Nicholas Spencer was the head of the medical research company Gen-Stone, involved in the development of an anticancer vaccine. He suddenly disappears one day when his plane crashes en route to Puerto Rico. The early results of this vaccine seemed highly promising. Yet, coinciding with Nicholas Spencer's disappearance comes news that the FDA is denying approval. Then follows the shocking revelation that Spencer had looted Gen-stone of huge sums of money-including the lifetime savings of people who had risked every cent they had. Carley DeCarlo, the 32 year old columnist for the Wall Street Weekly, is assigned to cover this story. Carley is the stepsister of Spencer's wife Lynn, an aggressive PR woman and socialite, whom she dislikes and distrusts. The day after news of her husband's diappearance rocks the financial and medical world, Lynn attends a stockholders meeting of Gen-stone, flaunting expensive clothing and jewelry. Accused of having partcipated in this scam, she appears indifferent to the anger of people attending the meeting. That same night, she narrowly escapes death when her mansion in Bedford, New York, is set on fire. She turns to Carley then, begging her to use her investigative skills to prove that she was not her husband's accomplice. As the story continues further, there is indeed someone else behind the scenes killing people. He wants revenge for losing his wife.
Rating: Summary: One of Mary Higgins Clark's best book Review: The second time around is one of Mary Higgins Clark's best book. I liked the story it's never boring. There are a lot of action and suspense too ! It's hard to guess the end, but the story is not hard to understand. The story is about a journalist Carley DeCarlo who investigates about Nicholas Spencer. Spencer is accused of fraud and has died in a plane crash. He was a biologists and wants to find a vaccine against the cancer. Some people think that he is not dead but that he simulated his death and went to Switzerland. Carley has met Spencer just once but she thinks that she knows him and that he is innocent. Carley interviews a lot of people who have met or worked with him. $ One time,Ned Cooper, a mad has burned Spencer's wife Lynn house. Lynn is Carley sister-in-law. Ned who lost all his money in Spencer's company wants to take revenge so he wants to kill all people who don't love himand all people who loved Spencer, he wants to kill Carley too. The investigate is hard but Carley understands that Spencer was not the guilty, the same evening two people try to kill her... If you want to know more read the book!!! I've read the book in French and the title is Une seconde chance( a second chance) and don't find the title in relation to the story. I' don't buy the book for title so it's not important. I highly recommended it!!!
