Rating: Summary: Top-notch story, but needs some help from a good editor Review: I really enjoyed the story line, fast-paced, interesting characters, exciting. But, I found myself becoming more and more impatient with the overabundance of "shrugging". Everybody shrugged, continually! Will definitely look for other books by this first-time author, but hope in the meantime he finds a good editor to help with the details.
Rating: Summary: Too much shrugging, but don't shrug this book off! Review: 50 pages into this book, I called my sister. Why? Because as avid readers, we've made a sacred vow to one another. We have promised to alert one another in the event of an exceptional book. And "Killing Floor" is just that. I did not recommend the book to her. I COMMANDED her to read it. It is supremely entertaining. Thanks to the ride it gave me, I am off to the local bookstore tonight (sorry, Amazon.com, but instant gratification is the one thing you unfortunately cannot provide) to try (probably in vain) to find another book that captivates me as much as "Killing Floor." I also deeply appreciate the fact that, despite its rough edge, this book did not contain one single "f" word. See, Hollywood? IT CAN BE DONE!!! One, and only one complaint, Mr. Child -- what the heck was with all the shrugging?! It was your book's only distracting element ; unfortunately, I found myself in the midst of adrenaline-laden scenes trying to think of other gestures you could've used. But hey! Your use of the word "the" was pretty heavy, too. :-) A phenomenal debut. The only reason I did not give the book a ten is that I reserve that rating for books that have moved my soul. A "9" is the highest rating I give a book that I've read for entertainment purposes only. A recommendation for those who have enjoyed this book: order a copy of "The Day After Tomorrow" by Alan Folsom. It's the only book I can think of that gave me a ride like the one "Killing Floor" did. Thank you, Amazon, for providing this great service! You've enhanced the reading experience ten-fold.
Rating: Summary: This is a great first effort. Review: Mr. Child has a winner here. Sure, there were some technical flaws, but still it is better than most John Grisham books. The only thing that disturbed me was the way Jack Reacher, a drifter and stranger to town, was able to take over a murder investigation from the local police authority. There is a great twist at the end that caught me completely off guard. Congratulations to Mr. Child. I will be looking for his next book!
Rating: Summary: Details, details, details Review: This is a great book and I did enjoy it, but some of the details need a little work. Others have pointed out problems with the weapons and I noticed that when Jack was preparing for his ambush, he smeared mascara on his face. First of all, I doubt if even a full tube of mascara would cover a face and second, it comes in a hard tube, not one you can squeeze, and there was no mention of him breaking it open. Also, I thought it strange that he referred to a collection of techinical banking reports as "deadly". Dead boring, maybe, but "deadly" seems a little off. Another thing that is somewhat unbelievable is how a 20-year veteran policeman is reduced to a secondary role, taking orders from a relative stranger.
Rating: Summary: A hero who is also human, nice. Review: When Mr. Child discribed the after effects of adrenaline after a life or death encounter I knew a very good author was at work. Some minor technical mistakes(firearms and military training)can easily be corrected with proper reseach and a good editor. Books this well written are hard to find. "Killing Floor" would make a great movie if not altered.
Rating: Summary: Will keep you up all night reading! Review: One of the best books I have read in a long time. Can't wait for "Reacher's" next adventure. This book will pull you in and won't let go. You live each adventure with the characters.
Rating: Summary: Grisham - eat 'yer heart out!!! Review: In New Zealand, this book was sold as "Better than Grisham, or your money back"! I enjoyed the book so much that I wrote to the NZ publisher telling them to "keep my money"! They were good enough to write back and say a new "Jack Reacher" thriller will be out early in '98 - can't wait!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding. Review: There are many reasons why you should read this. Not only is it a terrific story, one that you'll remember long after you've finished it, but it is that rare item - an intelligent and well-written action story. Despite the pace which begs you to race to the end of each page - time and time again I found myself deliberately slowing down, just savouring the words. My book of the year and it's going to take a lot to beat it.....
Rating: Summary: Not bad, but.... Review: There is only one big question mark in this book:
If use chemical bleach to bleach off the One dolloar bills, 1)the structure of the paper dollar will become very crispy and fragile, especially the paper structural materials are a mixture of burlap, sisal and cotton;2) Since over 90% of its material is cotton, the shrinkage after the bleaching would be pretty bad, unless the dollar bills' paper material is pre-shrunk by the US monetary system; 3)If the dollar bills were collected either new or old as the book said, and even the author himself could solve the above mentioned two problems, the $100.00 re-printing process would be still impossible to be perfect, since the old one dollar bill's surface would be too fussy, furry, and uneven with lot of wrinkles, scars, foldings, torn-away, twisted deform problem, the reprinted 100 dollar would not even pass the easy inspection of an amateur user. Therefor, this is the ACHILLES' HEEL, a deadly FLAW of this generally not bad book. Also, if the author wants to move
Rating: Summary: I want to nominate this one for an Edgar Award of 1997!!!! Review: The writing is so smooth and logical. The characters are so vividly painted, I think the hero of this book would become one of the greatest personalities like Harry Bosch of Michael Connelly's and the old Mathew Scudder of Lawrence Block's series. A self-reject guy but never lost and obviously quite understood where he wanted to go. A deep and nice ego, not arrogant, not pretentious at all; a tough character but at the same time, not trying to be a character as John Corey, the N.Y.detective, a jerk and a failure created fatally by Demille in his latest PLUM ISLAND. I didn't mind the NRA member's complaints and his correction at all. I am holding my breath and waiting impatiently for Mr. Child's next one! Please don't disappointed me like James Elliot did with his second book, NOWHERE TO HIDE. Don't be fooled by the praises, Mr. Child, your talents do not need to be wasted hastely and carelessly! Keep up the good work! And folks, please get this one from AMAZON.com ASAP to support Mr. Child's wonderful crea
