Rating: Summary: Good summer read Review: I picked this up to pass the time on a cross-country airplane trip, and the time flew. The book starts with a great attitude. As I kept going, some of the coincidences made me think "wait a minute", but I enjoyed it enough to keep going. I'll read his second book, too, but I'll wait for the paperback.
Rating: Summary: DO NOT pass this book up because of first person Review: If I had read the reviews, I would have never purchased this GREAT audio book. I routinely put books back on the shelf if I see any "I's". I was very distressed when I realized this was a first person story. In about 5 minutes, however, I didn't care anymore (1st person just WORKS here), and hurried to put in my order for the sequel. This is SUCH a great book. If you like Harry Bosch, you'll be wild about Jack Reacher. I can't say enough good things about this book. I was surprised to read the comments on too much "shrugging". Maybe it was more noticeable reading than listening. I feel like I have just watched this entire book in the theater. EXTREMELY vivid, and great listening. Worth every cent and more.
Rating: Summary: quite captivating, good vacation lecture Review: when I really enjoy a book, I keep coming back to the parts I mostly enjoyed and read again, and again. And I had to do this quite often in this case. It was a real page-turner from the beginning, it costed me one day and one nigh't of my vacation to read it. Good storys develop their own momentum, an own language, the characters come alive and roam freely through our imagination which such a power that one has to know the ending as soon as possible. Eventhough I am a dedicated sci-fi fan, and some of the situations depicted were quite placative I can recommend this book to every man or woman. Looking forward to its sequel.
Rating: Summary: It's dangerous to drive and listen to this audio book Review: I have just started the 2nd cassette of this book. The end of the 1st cassette was so intense I thought I would have to pull off the road! This is a GOOD story! I have never read anything by this author before, and he's great. Of course, this is another fantastic Dick Hill narration. His reading of the GREAT fight scenes was so realistic, I felt like I was there getting my eyes gouged out. The best writing and/or audio should take you away from the every day world. This one certainly is doing that for me! I can hardly wait for the drive to work tomorrow to see what happens next. Wow.
Rating: Summary: An exciting novel. Review: I enjoyed this book so much that I did not even notice the "shrugging" mentioned by other reviewers. If you want an exciting can't put it down book to read in the next month choose this one!
Rating: Summary: Well Plotted Review: A good first novel. Well plotted and believable characters. The first-person viewpoint works well . If you like tough fiction you'll like Jack Reacher.
Rating: Summary: Captured my interest from the very first page. Review: When I read a book, it has to be interesting from the very first chapter and that is exactly what this book does. The twists in the book really made you want to keep going to find out where the next twist was going to be. The end was a real delight. One interesting book and I hope they never make it into a movie, because it seems they always ruin a good book when they make it into a movie. It seems to destroy all those pictures that you vision in your own mind. Very good book!. Can't wait for the next one to come out.
Rating: Summary: Give it a "nod." Review: I highly recommend this first-time effort from a very promising writer. Jack Reacher is a likable protagonist in the same way as Harry Bosch is in Michael Connelly's books, except for the incredibly cold-blooded manner in which he dispatched nine people (even though I was glad to see each of them go). I read strictly for entertainment, and this book entertained me from beginning to end. When I finish a book, I don't feel compelled to "grade" the author, or criticize his/her work, so I offer the following points as observations, not criticisms. (1) Jack was an MP in the peacetime army, he was not trained in special forces, or as a Ranger or Navy Seal. Where would he develop the "5 against 1 is pretty good odds," "shoot 'em in the back," "blow their brains out" mentality and experience? (2) It would have been easier to visualize Roscoe as a serious long-term love interest if we knew her first name. Unless I read past it, Jack always referred to her by her last name only(and it's a man's first name, no less). This implies more of a drinking buddy setting than a romance. (3) As several other readers have mentioned, there is a "whole lot of shruggin' going on." But what about all that "nodding?" Sometimes the characters seemed like bobble-head dolls with hiccups. My guess is that, even though all the nodding and shrugging can get a little distracting, it was not the result of careless editing, but rather a conscious effort to let the reader "see" the casual give and take among the characters. It did get out of hand a couple of times, though--once when Jack was talking to Molly(we know her first name)on the phone he "heard her shrug," and another time he said "I shrugged to myself." Again, these comments are not meant as criticisms. Read the book, you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I thought the book was great for a first time writer. An editor should have rechecked over the work. If one more person shrugged, I was going to scream. Other than that, Great job!
Rating: Summary: Impressive. Review: Lee Child is, simply, a great writer. Killing Floor has it all. It has a complicated mystery, some truly nightmarish images, a lot of action, and a nice little one week stand between Reacher and a police woman named Roscoe. Don't worry, I didn't give anyhting away, that was one of the few predictable parts of the novel. The novel is a good one, full of atmospheric details, and a fine mystery. Anyone who enjoys espionuage, action, or mystery novels will like this.
