Rating: Summary: What a Book! Review: Wow, what a book! Lee Child has given us perhaps the most interesting and complex hero in some time. Jack Reacher is Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Arnold Schwarzenegger rolled into one...but with much more personality and pizzazz! I'm only sorry it's taken me so long to read Mr. Child's book! The story is a riveting one, focusing on Jack's involvement in a crime in a small town in Georgia. Boy, does he make a mistake in deciding to stop off in this little burg, just to find out about a blue singing legend named Blind Blake. But, what a story unfolds. The dialogue is brisk, economical, and very involving! Along with Jack, there are a ton of characters that are so remarkably fleshed out and described, you would think this was a true crime story! There are scenes of nail-biting action; very graphic and disturbing scenes of violence; and amidst all this some really well-written scenes of sensitivity and poignancy. Jack's meeting with an old lady who once knew the old blues legend is outstanding in its emotional punch! Paul Hubble, the neurotic banker; Roscoe, the beautiful policewoman; Finlay, the chief of detectives; and the evil villains are some of the best written characters in recent mystery fiction. What is so amazing about this book is the way Lee Child has not only woven a complex murder mystery, but also a chilling tale of greed, madness, and lost loves and lives. This is an emotional, wrenching debut, and I cannot wait to start in on the rest of this series! An outstanding piece of fiction!
Rating: Summary: Definitely a keeper! Review: This book is a definite keeper! What a great read- well developed characters, realistic timelines and strategies! If you like Stephen Hunter's books, you will LOVE this book.
Rating: Summary: The Killing Floor Review: This novel was interesting, to say the least. The plot was well developed and very detailed, but some descriptions were a little on the gory side...definately NOT material for a person with a weak stomach. Also, the author's writing style was a little abrupt and hard to read at times. However, I thought that this book was good airplane reading material.
Rating: Summary: What a great debut novel! Review: I have to say, as debut novels go, Lee Child reached out and grabbed my full attention with this one. From beginning to end, there wasn't one part of this book that didn't keep me wondering what was going to happen next. Despite being a little graphic in a couple of places (which is to be expected in this type of book), I immensely appreciate an author who can write a book like this that holds your interest and attention and not once felt compelled to the 'f' word (or some of the other vulgarities that some authors feel the need to use). I have already started his second Jack Reacher novel, and so far it promises to be as good as this one.
Rating: Summary: They simply don't get much better than this Review: It has been quite a while since I first read Killing Floor, and in that time it has almost become like an old friend. It's quite simply an outstanding thriller, especially for a debut novel. In Jack Reacher, Lee Child has created a hero for the ages, tough, smart and with excellent taste in music! The action in Killing Floor is a breath of fresh air compared to the flashy martial arts rubbish we are usually dealt. Fighting is a fast, dirty game, and Reacher is the fastest and the dirtiest you'll ever hope to meet.
Rating: Summary: love that jack Review: I bought this book on a whim, and now, as far as I'm concerned, Mr. Child can't write 'em fast enough. I love Jack Reacher. The kind of guy a woman wants to take home and a man wants to be. I too had problems with Mr. Child's attention to detail, but I'm sure he'll get better (or his editor will) with time. Read it, I know you'll like it.
Rating: Summary: The Killing Floor Review: Possibly one of the best thrillers I have read, especially from a debut author. Jack Reacher was perhaps not a beleivable character as has been pointed out in other reviews but it's fiction. J k Rowlings books are hardly believable but she is world famous now. The idea behind the money was incredible, who actually thinks that kind of stuff up.
Rating: Summary: Worthy of the First Mystery awards it garnered! Review: Thought Jack Reacher was a wonderful protagonist. Plot offered great entertainment and allowed one to indulge in a well crafted conspiracy theory. Saw a review that compared Reacher to Stephen Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger. I cannot go that far, but I may upgrade Reacher when I read the rest of the series. I did not find the violence offputting, after a number of the reader reviews spoke negatively of those scenes. To me they were pretty much brief passages except for the Sam Peckinpahlike slow motion sequence of the final fight. While many bad guys were eliminated, their demises were pretty much, "I was here, they were there, they had these weapons, I had these weapons, I had to accomplish this in this manner." Then he does it. The characters, the howdoneit and the intrigue occupy the great majority of the book...and they are first rate. I look forward to more Jack Reacher.
Rating: Summary: Five Stars ? ! - I don't think so ..... Review: If this is what it takes to get published then I'm hitting the keyboard tonight. This would have to be the most disappointing read I've had in a long while. It started with enormous potential but I got a sick feeling half way through that there wasn't going to be a twist at the end - and I was right. And it's got one of those Rambo heroes - you know the ones, he has the intelligence of Einstein, the fighting ability of Tyson and Holyfield combined, and can use any weapon known to man ! The plot could have been so much more devious and more full of intrigue - but it was a clanger ! Keep away from this one - maybe Lee's others are better but I doubt it.
Rating: Summary: A riveting read Review: Powerful writing with a strong plot and great dialogue. Drifter Jack Reacher stumbles onto a mystery that is multi-layered and complex. The violence is brutal, the plot intriguing and well-researched. Definitely not for the cozy lover. Reacher has the background and size to make his actions believable. I can't wait to travel down the next road with Reacher to see where he takes me!
