Summary: Well, it was better than the Lake House.....
Review: but that's not saying much. It did keep me mildly interested, but I'm very glad I got it from the library rather than spend money on it.

After being unable to even finish The Lake House I swore I'd never read Patterson again, but decided to give him another chance. Sorry I did....If this series keeps deteriorating in the same direction book 4 should qualify as a Harlequin romance.

Summary: Average
Review: See storyliine above.

This is the third in a series where James Patterson writes in the first person of a woman. Each time I start one of these stories I just keep thinking Lindsay Boxer is a man, but that's just because male authors obviously know a mans perspective better than a womans, and as a reader it's what I expect (but he seems to do women well?!).
Anyway, once I'm into the story I forget most of that and just enjoy the fast-pace and the unexpected turns. A good story that's comparable to the other two in the series.

Summary: I liked it!
Review: Like Brown's "Da Vinci Code" Patterson's books all have very short chapters. Brown's has something like 120 and this has, I think, 111. The point it, it "goes" and you're never bored. But besdies that, it's well written and better than some of his other books. The only Patterson I liked better was "Roses are Red."

Also recommended: McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD

Summary: Fast Mover
Review: I read this book in one day, and like a previous reviewer stated, was disappointed it came to an end. Patterson has a unique style of changing the point of view from one chapter to the next, alternating third person perspective with the minor characters with first person when the chapter is about the main character. I found this approach interesting and refreshing. Also, Patterson likes to write short chapters, about 500-750 words per chapter. 3rd Degree has 111 chapters, but read quickly, with each chapter ending with a hook that pulled you into the next chapter. I wasn't real fond of the female detective club thing in this book, but found the story entertaining and never dull. His plot and the intertwining of current events relative to terrorism added realism to the story. I recommend this book to any fiction reader.

Summary: Wonderful Twists & Turns
Review: I read this book in a day and was disappointed when it was over. I love the twists and unexpected turns and look forward to the next in this series. I very much enjoy the comaraderie of the women involved. My only reservation is the language, especially that used by the women. I've worked over 30 years in various professional settings and I've only known one women who used one word in particular. I don't think it would make the books unrealistic to clean up the ladies' language a bit. In fact, it might be more realistic.

Summary: Book club suggestion
Review: When this book was suggested by out book club, my first thought was, Oh, no . . .not a James Patterson novel. We usually read books a little more "off" the beaten path like "The Life of Pi, "The Bark of the Dogwood" or "The Forest Lover." So I was totally surprised when I found that I actually liked it! I was expecting some overly commercial dumbed-down book, but what I got instead was a page turner with interesting characters and good pacing. Don't believe all the bad reviews--this one is a keeper.

Summary: strong ¿Women¿s Murder Club¿ thriller
Review: San Francisco Homicide lieutenant Lindsay Boxer is jogging with assistant DA Jill Barnhardt when the cop sees bruises on the shoulder of her companion. Before she asks about the injury, an explosion occurs in a nearby townhouse. Lindsay rushes inside rescuing a child, but three are dead at the scene.

Apparently the terrorist group August Spies successfully targeted a CEO and his family and killed them. Lindsay's investigation of the crime coincides with the inquiries of Joe Molinari of the Office of Homeland Security. Joe and Lindsay are attracted to one another while Jill's spouse has turned abusive towards her. Then there are her other two pals that make up the club, medical examiner Claire Washburn and Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas who help with the case not realizing the danger as they get to close to the killers.

The latest "Women's Murder Club" thriller is an action-packed tale that never lets up until the final moment. The story line is apropos as the "third world war" against terrorism has come home to San Francisco. Though the spousal abuse subplot seems off based on Jill's strength of character (from the previous books), somehow the authors pull it off with realism and bring it back into the main plot. The budding romance between Joe and Jill (at least it's not Jack) further humanizes the heroine. Fans of exhilarating thrillers with real people including villains who believe in their cause will enjoy the latest work of these powerful females.

Summary: Intriguing plot driven by great characters
Review: With "3rd Degree," James Patterson does a nice job of creating characters that drive the story, rather than vice-versa. If you're tired of plot-driven novels with thin, and often cliché, characters, then you're likely to dig this one.

If you're into writers like Patterson, John Grisham, Brad Meltzer, etc., then there's a new writer you should check out: Greg Ippolito. His new novel, "Zero Station," is absolutely terrific, and an excerpt is available online for FREE. He's still a relative unknown (a friend turned me onto his work)...but this is a must-read. You can check him out and read the excerpt at: www.ZERO-STATION.net. Don't miss it!

Summary: BOXER REBELLION
Review: James Patterson has proven to be a master of quick, terse narrative and shocks galore. In "3rd Degree" he does it again, pulling some major surprises, while serving up a tasty and timely tale of terrorism. The relationship between the four heroines continues to cement and become even more credible. Linday's romance with Joe Molinari is also a plus, let's hope it continues. The plot has some really nasty people who kill in the name of justice, but are merely serving their own warped concept of world peace.
This is an exciting entry in the Womens Murder Club, and I look forward to more from Patterson.
