Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I breezed through this book and was actually disappointed to see it end so fast. I made sure to pass it along to alot of my friends and everyone loves it! Beano and his con-artist family are true everyday heroes. You'll want to cheer as you finish the last page!
Rating: Summary: A nasty, smart ride Review: This tale of Beano Bates and his final big con is smart and funny. Beano is the ultimate fast-talking con man hero who is never down for the count and who has tons of tricks up his sleaves. Beano takes on mob bosses who seem untouchable and beats the gambling system with the help of his bizarre family of brilliant con men. What really makes the tale is the brilliant cons set up by Beano that keep you guessing but when you look back seemed to simple to fall for. Give this book a try and fall into the the con of a master, a King Con, if you will.
Rating: Summary: A Great Summer Read! Review: In the same theme as The A-Team and other works by Cannell, King Con is filled with over the top characters and fast moving action making it a very fun read. The quick pace and complicated but brilliant con do not allow you to put this down.
Rating: Summary: Neat, funny caper story with an engaging con man Review: While I've been a fan of Cannell's television work for years, this was the first of his books that I've read, and I greatly enjoyed it. Although not timeless literature, King Con is a quick, light read with appealing characters, funny situations, an inside look at the con game business and a happy ending. If you like Elmore Leonard or Donald Westlake, you will probably like this one too. I'd love to see more stories about Mr. Bates...
Rating: Summary: Lots of fun - highly recommend it! Review: If you liked the movie "The Grifters" or "House of Cards", this book is your cup of tea.
Rating: Summary: A fun and light read. Review: If you can get by the cheesy name, King Con is a very fun and not too complicated novel. It definitely would translate into a good comedy movie, but I don't think the author got into enough depth. Definitely a hard one to put down though.
Rating: Summary: A real good read Review: Stephen Cannell got my attention and kept it from the beginning. True, some of his plot twists seemed a little contrived: a dying wife allowed Victoria to become an "insider", for example; but by and large when I just relaxed and went with the flow, my willingness to suspend disbelief was not strained--with one exception...The resultant surprise was fun, but later when reflecting on the story, I felt duped for the sake of a surprise.
Rating: Summary: A Fast, Furious, and FUN read Review: I read this in 1 day--couldn't put it down! Fun to read--moves along at a fast pace. Some great ideas for cons and revenge! It will make me think twice about possible scams for a long time. Several interesting characters--look forward to the movie that I'm sure will soon follow. True, there were some unbelievable things, but who cares?- it is definately a book for fun reading. This is one to take to the beach or on vacation with you.
Rating: Summary: A great con by the king of con-men. Review: Remember the movie "The Sting"? "King Con" brings that same intensity to a con man pulling off a great con. Only this time nothing goes right. ( well, almost nothing.) Steven Cannell includes the reader as he wraps the con together with threads of Mafia, FBI and the prosecutor's office. Throw in a great love story, a cute dog and a lot of violence and he can keep you engrossed for hours.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and informative yarn about conning for revenge. Review: "King Con" is an easy-reading and informative thriller. I really enjoy learning from a novel about things that I wouldn't read anywhere else. Here we are given the inside story on confidence games -- big and little, new and old. The plot is lifted directly from the movie "The Sting." Grifter mistakenly cons bad guy, bad guy kills someone grifter cares about, grifter assembles and runs "big con" to get revenge, grifter gives away his share of the loot. But somehow this transparent plagarism goes down smoothly. The Sting was a great movie, and if you are going to copy from someone it makes sense to copy from the brightest kid in class. Cannell's great gift is naming his characters. Who else could have come up with B.A. Barakus, "Howlin' Mad" Murdock, and Beano Bates? In King Con Mr. Cannell shows us Beano's extended family: large, unusual yet believeable, as quirky as their names, yet skilled professionals in their arcane specialty. Mr. Cannell's books are fast acquiring a following, and this one will only add to it. If you like Cannell, don't miss this one.
