Rating: Summary: Last of the Breed Review: Last of the Breed is one of the best survival stories written. It is exciting the entire time and you are rooting for Joe Mack during the whole book. It takes place in Siberia and is about an escaped prisoner of war (Joe Mack). Joe mack is a Sioux indian, so he has some wilderness experience. The book gets exciting from the fith page and stays exciting till the very last sentence. The last line in the book is definatly the best last line ever written. Last of the Breed is a great book worth reading.
Rating: Summary: A Very Far West-ern Review: One of L'amour's few science fiction titles. An Air Force pilot is shot down by Soviets and must use his wilderness skills to escape and survive in Siberia. Once you realize that the leader of the group of soldiers near the end is Alekhin, the bad guy, the tale is quite satisfying.
Rating: Summary: A GRAB YOU BY THE SEAT BOOK, IS MY RESPONSE ! Review: I bought this book years ago in hard back in 1986.It was good at that time. And someone mention this book to me just recently. I decided to read it again for the first time to see if it is good now. It is still a grab you and hold you by the seat book. It is too bad this was not a movie or book sequel. DON'T SHAKE YOUR HEAD ON THIS OLD BOOK. LOOK FOR THIS ONE IN YOU BOOKSTORE OR FIND IT ONLINE!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: Two days after finishing it I bought two books on wilderness survial skills. The way he described joe's conflict with his souix heritage and modern world was great.
Rating: Summary: This book got me hooked on L'Amour Review: I never read Louis L'Amour in high school, because all the "hicks" read them and I dont fall into the category. But on a job in Montana the summer after I graduated I ran across this book and thinking only to read a few pages while waiting for someone, I was immediately taken in and finished it a day later. Never had I read such vivid descriptions and character portayals since I first read J.R.R. Tolkien's "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Truly a surprise and most assuredly one of his best.
Rating: Summary: Good story, but very monotonous at times. Review: I liked the story, the setting, and the characters, however, the constant descriptions of the protagonist's "perfect camp sites" and the like quickly grew monotonous. I do give the ending kudos, as it manages to pull off the very difficult task of leaving the reader satisfied, while at the same time, leaving the door open for a sequel.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding suspenseful action adventure Review: This was really great! I agree with all previous reviews, a sequel is needed.....and a movie. A film "The Ice Runner" with Edward Albert Jr. 1993 seems loosly based on this book? db.
Rating: Summary: By far the best book I've ever read Review: The book "Last of the Breed" is by far the best book I've ever read and I've read quite a few. I'm reading it for a second time. Antone who likes survival books will love this. I would truly recomend this book to anyone who wants a good book to read. I love how he explains to the reader the description of the character so you know who it is even though he hasn't told you. For example 'Colonel Rukovsky opened his eyes and sat up. The man across the fire was dressed in furs, goatskins he believed, and had an AK-47 across his knees. His right hand held the gun. His left held a cup of tea.' That gets me every time. Anyone who wants a bok to read should definately read "Last of the Breed" by Louis L'amoure.
Rating: Summary: Make it into a Movie Review: What a great book. I also never thought Mr. L'Amour wrote anything but westerns. This book, and his Haunted Mesa were two of the best books I have ever read. Someone has to write a finish to it. Love the ending, and although it ends it doesn't. Make it into a movie!
Rating: Summary: Bad Indian, Good Indian, Great Story Review: As usual, Louis L'Amour, America's best story teller, writes this novel in such a way that you do not want to put it down. Joe Mack is the kind of person all American boys want to grow up to be like. I never wanted to go to Russia until I read the description of the mountains and the wilderness that only L'Amour's great style could describe. I now want to go and see that untouched wilderness, before, like the American wilderness, it becomes marred by human destruction. I hope there will be discovered a manuscript, that Louis L'Amour left before he died, for a sequel to this story. Joe Mack has some unfinished business to tend to, and of course, a romance to return to.
