Rating: Summary: Authentic interaction between prosecutor and police. Review: Having worked in upper management in a prosecutor's office I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the workings of the NYC D.A.'s office and found it very accurate, particularly the somewhat "morbid" sense of humor as a defense mechanism very the everyday ugly things.
Rating: Summary: Complicated Mystery Review: Homicide detective Mike Chapman calls Alex while he is at the scene of a sexual assault and murder. Alex is the bureau chief in charge of the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit.
Dr. Gemma Dogen had been found barely breathing on her office floor at a hospital due to multiple deep stab wounds and possible rape. Alex's team is flooded with suspects from the hospital staff down to the inmates of the psychiatric center which is connected to the hospital. The hospital and the psychiatric center sit on top of underground tunnels. Hundreds of homeless live within the tunnels. It is apparent they wander in the hospital since most of them are wearing the hospital's scrubs.
Alex and Mike walk the reader through every step of the murder. Now Alex is targeted for murder.
***Very detailed in execution. Do not bother reading this one unless you like in depth murder mysteries. It is a challenge to the most logical of minds.***
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Get Through It. Review: I can't remember the last time I set down a mystery without finishing it, but I couldn't get through this one. The author seems so intent on making sure we know how clever she is that she forgets to keep us turning the pages. I was really disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Well crafted Review: I have only one disappointment with this book. Part of the plot revolves around one of the characters visiting Tower Bridge and being able to climb to the gallery during the 1950's and 1960's. It was never open to the public then. I lived within walking distance and my school backed onto the Bridge. (One of my friends was even the son of the Bridge Master and lived on the Southern approach to the Bridge). It took a little of the shine off of a very finely detailed piece. Linda, keep them coming!!
Rating: Summary: very interesting book Review: I just finished this book and the ending was great. It had a few slow spots but it is really a good book. This is the first book I have read by Linda Fairstein and I now want to read her other book. Even though it is a novel she took the crimes from true life
Rating: Summary: Drags on.... Review: I normally finish a book every couple of days...I was stuck on this one for four times that long! I can't put my finger on why, except that the characters just never caught my interest. The plot was weighted down with so much unneccesary detail, it took forever for things to move along. Not the worst book I have read, but no where near the top either.
Rating: Summary: Too much background and details! Review: I wish the author would concentrate on giving us a good story and less speech making about her real life job. She seems to cross the line between writing a novel and giving a lecture about her real job. Pick one or the other and do it well; the two don't mix. Those of us who purchase a book classified as a novel want fiction and a good story...not real life lectures and in-depth details of how the Supreme Court functions (boring). Stick with the story and forget the endless details about the real life job. They aren't interesting. Get back to the Vineyard and some nice scenery. This book was agony to read. I kept putting it down because of the boring details. I never thought I would finish it.
Rating: Summary: Grabbed me from the start and then... Review: I'm not used to reading novels of this ilk, but when I found a copy on my company's book exchange, I thought the descriptives interesting enough to warrant an attempt. Linda Fairstein captured me in the first pages of this book - even though I'd never read Final Jeopardy! I cared about the characters and the book really held my attention. However, I found the ending to be a little disappointing. I found myself reading the book well into the evenings, not wanting to put it down (and a little scared to do so and return to reality), but the ending was a bit abrupt. Left me thinking, 'oh that's it?' But, through Linda's writing, I found myself feeling a little fearful of ever entering a hospital environment again!!! Very realistic. I would and have recommended to friends!
Rating: Summary: New York Times Book Review 8/24/97 Review: In murder, as in real estate, location is everything. So when a prominent doctor is found raped and stabbed in her office at a prestigious New York hospital, she gets a final accolade: the murder makes page 1 of the newspapers. "Likely to Die," Linda Fairstein's second novel, takes its title from police slang for a crime victim whose death is inevitable. As in her previous novel, "Final Jeopardy," the author (who works a day job as head of the Manhattan District Attorney's sex crimes unit) places a smart and driven Manhattan prosecutor named Alexandra Cooper at the center of the action. Since Dr. Gemma Dogen was a "single, professional woman, no children, no pets, no one to depend on her for contact," Alex is left to discover the victim through her work-which makes a suspect out of everyone at the hospital, staff and patients alike, not to mention all the vagrants who hang out in the tunnels beneath the building. Such a wide net might daunt some investigators, but not Fairstein's fearless heroine, whose portraits of her boss and fellow prosecutors are as engaging as her asides about history and neurology. Throw in a little romance, a hurried trip to England and a valentine to Martha's Vineyard, and the result is a stylish and oddly antic book, despite the gruesome nature of its subject. -Madeleine Blai
Rating: Summary: Even better than "Final Jeopardy" Review: In this second novel by Linda Fairstein the writing style is better and the story is superb. Alex Cooper is back and better than ever. You travel with her on her journey in finding the killer of talented physician. The suspense starts with the first call to come to the doctor's office and investigate the crime scene and follows thoughout the twists and turns of this wonderful book. Mike Chapman is back and the sexual tension with him and Alex is still under the surface. After reading this book, I'll be very careful before I check into a hospital. The only thing bad is that it will have you begging for another episode in the life of Cooper. If you enjoy a good thriller, then grab this book and enjoy
