Summary: Wonderful Reading...thanks Mr. Huston!
Review: ...I couldn't put this book down. The whole legal aspect, combined with politics and military leadership challenges, made it fun and pointed reading. I look forward to the next story.

Summary: fantastic legal, political, and military thriller
Review: An outstanding follow up to Huston's superior work, The Balance of Power, we return to events in the days after his first novel. Though readable on its own, to me the book is better if you have read Balance of Power.

Admiral Billings, having obeyed the Letter of Marque and Reprisal issued by Congress, largely thanks to Speaker of the House Standbrige and over the strenuos objections of President Manchester, and hand delivered by Speaker's aide Jim Dillon, successfully defeated the terrorists who attacked the Pacific Flyer killing all of the crew except for the captain, whom they kidnapped. These events closing out the Balance of Power, the beginning of Price of Power finds him under arrest upon his return to Pearl Harbor. The court marital, convened at the authority of the President, charges the Admiral for disobeying a direct order from the commander-in-chief and guilty of murder for those Americans who died in the attack.

Meanwhile, some of the terrorists, including their leader who calls himself George Washington, we find had escaped and kidnapped the American head of a mining company in Indonesia and his wife. Also, those terrorists who were captured on the US Navy raid, returned with the USS Constitution back to Hawaii, may be released as there may be insufficient evidence to hold them for trial (this partially at the insistence of President Manchester).

Will Admiral Billings be court martaled and convicted, a pawn in the continuning struggle between President Manchester and Congress, particulary the Speaker of the House? Who will defend him? Will the terrorists be defeated? Will the hostages be rescued and the terrorists defeated once and for all, and who will give them the order to do so, Congress or the President?

A gripping thriller, though both a work of military fiction and great courtroom drama, to me the legal aspects of this novel somewhat outshine the military aspects. The court martial and brilliant defense of Admiral Billings was riveting, keeping me up late at night, and it was fascinating to see the continuing struggles between President and the Congress, as impeachment proceedings under Standbridge's direction of Manchester occur.

The real hero of the book though, fascinating given all the high powered lawyers, politicans, and military leaders, is Jim Dillon, the aide to Standbridge and the originator of the idea for a Letter of Marque and Reprisal (see Balance of Power). A very likeable character, quick of wit and great at thinking on his feet, but not possessing all the answers and becoming sick of the political fighting, is the core character of the novel.

A fastastic novel, one of the best explorations of the "fallout" from a previous novel I have ever seen, in some ways is better than Balance of Power. I never thought I would be a fan of courtroom drama, but the trials scenes were so extraordinary that I just may give Grisham and others a try. An excellent work of miliary fiction, lots to keep Tom Clancy and technothriller fans happy, even Marchinko fans happy with the US Navy Seals, key players in this work! Highly recommended.

Summary: Huston lets us down
Review: As an avid fan of Jim Huston from the first edition of his first novel, it is disappointing to see him put out such drivel -- probably in fulfillment of a multibook contract. His first three novels were a little skimpy in character development and contrived in dialogue, but these flaws were easy to overlook because of the interesting legal and constitutional dilemmas he contrived. In this book, he resorts to the standard Clancy-lite 'terrorist is loose in the US" theme and does it less well than most of the leaders in the genre. If Jim has run out of interesting plots, it's time for him to take a sabbatical before he destroys a great byline.

Summary: Wonderful follow-up
Review: Everyone is correct - beats T.C. - lots of tech jargon, but adds to the texture of the novel. I have two questions, however... Why wasn't George Washington's alliance more clearly defined? He was definitely a "bad guy", but I could have found him more dispicable if I'd known where he got those "sams" and cigeratte boats. Since we know he's a goner, will that be taken up in book 3? Additionally, I wonder why more wasn't made of the fact that the "President" cut off all communications with Billings. To me that was the worst of all. Here is the President effectively cutting off all means of contact with an aircraft carrier with several thousand men aboard. It seems to me that if the American people had known the abuse of the presidential authority - impeachment would have been open and shut?

Other than that, I think these were excellent books and eagerly await the next, which I understand will be forthcoming shortly. Keep up the good work - leave it to the attorney's to give us great fiction!

Summary: Don't start reading this book at 10:00pm.
Review: Exciting. Well written. Keeps one riveted to the pages. Was on vacation when I started it and had trouble putting it down. Can't wait to read Huston's other book.

Summary: One of the best sequels
Review: For those of you who thought that James W. Huston was a flash in the pan, WATCHOUT !!! This time he burnt down the house with this exciting sequel.I have just finished reading Price Of Power and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in politics and military affairs. Mr. Huston has perfectly blended the regal action of a good Scott Turow novel with the military action of Dale Brown. You will really feel the tension of the crisp dialogue, and the rapid fire action. It is a must buy, but I recommend that you first buy his first novel Balance of Power to understand some of the flashbacks. So in closing there is no sophomore jinks here !

Summary: Great follow-up of Balance of Power
Review: He does it again. I got both Balance & Price of power and read them in a row. Both book were well above my "Clancy's" expectations and the story was most fascinating and new.

Definitely, I've you've liked Balance of Power, you'll enjoyed this one as well which is a complete follow-up of the first one.

Finally bagged those terrorists!

Enjoy.

Summary: A Good Book - Worth reading
Review: I enjoyed this book. One criticism though - what self-respecting Admiral would drive a Miata?

Summary: It makes you want to research the constitution
Review: I had read "Balence of Power" many motnhs ago and forgotten how good the plot and the telling of the story was. "The Price of Power" brings bake the same cast and the same level of suspense and action. We have the US Navy ready and waiting, the political sharks in the water, the treacherous George Wahington kidnapping and terroriaing and the good guys represented by Jim Dillon and friends. Once again Jim has researched the constitution to help out our country in need and is prepared for his first two major legal trials, as a defence attorney on one hand and later as a prosecutor. Okay some is a little unbelieveable, but it is okay in fiction. I don't see how James Huston can come up with another sequel, but if he does I will buy it.
