Rating: Summary: Time to Hunt Review: Rich in story, characters, plots, pacing, and the tension, drama and compelling details of combat shooting. One of the very best!
Rating: Summary: The Best of the "Bob the Nailer" Books Review: Stphen Hunter has topped himself. This is the best installment yet involving Bob Lee "The Nailer" Swagger. Stephen Hunter has done an outstanding job of resprising this character and leading his readers down the path to anting more and more. He has also done a very effective job of tying together all the pieces of the story involving Swagger, his father and others who come out of the rural Arkansas landscape of these novels. Bob Lee Swagger is a retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant and one of the finest snipers to come out of the war. Hunter pays tribute to the best, GySgt Carlos Hathcock (who passed away recently from complications of MS). Hunter paints Swagger as a loner, an expert shot, a brilliant battlefield tactician and an accomplished planner and leader. He provides the background on his Vietnam experiences and puts him into an almost indefensible position from which to extricate himself. Stephen Hunter is the master of this sub-genre and I hope that TIME TO HUNT will not be the last we hear of Bob The Nailer.
Rating: Summary: Hunter is the master! Review: Well, this book was yet another glorious installment of the Bob the Nailer saga. I dare to say that Hunter is the best thriller writer in the business today. His books are just pumping with action. The battle of An Loc when Swagger and Fenn takes on the NVA battalion may be the best battle scene in print today. Seriously. When I was thinking about what Hunter should do with The Nailer now that he is getting on in years, I thought about what Clancy did with Mr.Clark, bringing him back to his Vietnam/Vigilante days. Without Remorse is probably one of Clancy's best works, rarer and rarer nowadays, and a Swagger in Nam book might just work great. Let's see how he racked up the numbers and got his name! I was a little disapointed to discover that Hot Springs will involve Earl Swagger, but I have no doubt that Hunter will come up spades!
Rating: Summary: Time To Hunt keeps you galloping! Review: In the last days of the Vietnam War, deep in-country, Bob Lee Swagger & Donny Fenn are in the sights of a deadly sniper. Years later Swagger is once again in the sniper's crosshairs but this time so is his family. Being of that age & era it brings certain gripping images back to mind. This isn't "just" about Vietnam & it's aftermath in the troubled life of a survivor. We meet everyone at the apex of their lives, in the 1970s when war & peace had our country by the shorthairs & camouflaged an older colder war. I found I did not want to lay this book down, did not want to do anything until it was read. A good thriller & mystery with no visible flaws. ..................
Rating: Summary: Sorry I read this one first! Review: I actually bought this book upon the recommendation of Henry Winkler(Fonzie) in an entertainment magazine. I needed something to read while on vacation in Jamaica. Unfortunately, I missed much of Jamaica because I could not put this down. Stephen Hunter does an excellent tapestry of historical and fictional events. The references to events from "Black Light" and "Point of Impact' almost had me buying both of those at the airport. I've told all my friends about Bob the Nailer and he is my new hero.
Rating: Summary: Stephen Hunter's latest in a GREAT series Review: I tend to agree with one customer reviewer, the Kirkus review was woefully ignorant of dates and locations (Arizona vs. Idaho, 1965 vs.1972) Even though I was quite small at the time, I knew perfectly well action in Vietnam was not exactly "winding down" in 1965. Anyway, this latest episode in the Bob Lee Swagger series has all the Stephen Hunter trademarks of "Point of Impact", "Dirty White Boys" and "Black Light", such as pinpoint details in rifles and ammunition, good-ole-boy dialect and at least one police officer named Benteen. In fact, Hunter fans will recognize two character links to yet another of his action masterpieces, "The Day Before Midnight". There's twists in the plot, surprise endings in various chapters that lead the reader to the edge of the cliff of suspense and back again. I started reading Stephen Hunter in 1994 and have since purchased all the books previously mentioned. For supposedly being a country boy naive to the ways of the world, Bob Lee Swagger possesses an innate ability to see through a situation, and anticipate his adversary moves in advance, to figure out the angle no one thought of, continually outsmarting the folks who went to "all those fancy universities". What I like about this book is that it fills out the story of his best buddy from Vietnam, Donny Fenn, Donny's involvement with and betrayal by Navy officials spying out the antiwar movement in Washington, and their participation in Vietnam leading up to their being shot by the Russian sharpshooter T. Solaratov. Bob is able to close another dark chapter in his life with the "nailing" of Solaratov through a solid door as the Russian prepares to eliminate his actual target, Julie Fenn Swagger. While it's true that Julie's showing signs of tiring of Bob's ways, those very same qualities are what enabled them to continue as a family. And, the finale is another patented Hunter surprise ending, where it's revealed that sly old Bob was one step ahead, as always. If you love action, this book is a must-have. I read the entire 510-page book in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. Like other readers, I feel as if I know Bob Lee personally. Thank You, Stephen Hunter, for another winner.
Rating: Summary: Hunt this One! Review: Once again, Stephen Hunter has put together an amazing novel of both literary cohesion and action. I loved this book and all of its predecessors in the "Bob the Nailer" series. Each book gets better than the previous one. I cannot wait for the next one!
Rating: Summary: "Don't let "Bob the Nailer" drift away! Review: The Swagger books are classic but Time to Hunt is by far the greatest! I am only 23 years old but my father, being an English teacher and Vietnam Veteran, tuned me onto Hunter and I can't get enough! "Bob the Nailer" is a great story so I am begging, PLEASE don't lay him down to rest! Donny Fenn is a great addition to Swagger. Julie is the girl back home that every boy in "Nam" kept in his mind. A great story that kept me on the edge of my seat! A man like Swagger can never rest easy, he has too many demons that will not let him rest...long live Swagger! All of Mr. Hunters books are great, but the Swagger saga is an American classic!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Unfortunately I read this book first not knowing it was a sequel until I happened on the book Point of Impact then of course I went after Black Light so I could read them one after the other. As a female I found some of the technical stuff hard to follow at times but I was proud of myself for noting the discrepancy in bullet types when Swagger looks back on his dad's killing. All & all it is a great book and I don't know about other women but this is the kind of man any women worth her salt could fall in love with even from the pages of a book! Here we are back to the "strong silent type" that they say all women secretly look for. Julie said it best when she said had she answered his letters "she would have been lost" and that she was headed "straight into catastrophe". Oh my oh my!
Rating: Summary: What A Page-Turner! Review: This was my first Stephen Hunter book--but not my last! I promptly went out and bought three more Hunter books; all I could find at the time. It may be the best novel I've ever read. I usually don't care for gimmicks like two or three barely related stories in a book, but it really works here--not gimmicky at all! I was literally on the edge of my seat 95% of the time. I read "Master Sniper" next, and it was virtually as good a book. Stephen Hunter is #1!
