Rating: Summary: Good Follow Up to Jurassic Park Review: With 'The Lost World', Crichton has continued his story of genetically engineered dinosaurs. This time on an overlooked island related to the first story. The story is similar to the first novel, but it's still a good read. Crichton adds his usual mix of technology and adventure. If you saw the movie, but hated Spielberg's Godzilla-like ending, read the book. It ends differently. If you're a Crichton fan, or a Jurassic Park fan, you should definitely read this.
Rating: Summary: A Good Novel But Not A Great One. Review: What I can't understand about a lot of novels nowadays is that they hardly live up to the title or to the main plot. I've read tons of novels that are 300+ pages and the majority of the novels focus on the regular everyday lives of characters! Boring! Anywho, the Lost World, I'm sad to say, is one of those novels. It starts out with scientists on an island burning up an already dead hadrosaur corpse, goes into two-hundred pages of character lives, and briefly brings in the dinosaurs. I am a big dinosaur fan and I had high hopes for this one! The movie was way better than this one! The dinosaurs are not involved as much as what they want you to believe. I don't know what these reviewers in the novel see what's so great about this book, but they must read some boring books if they think this one is good! It's an alright read overall and the descriptions of the dinosaurs are good, but it doesn't live up to the title and the hype.
Rating: Summary: Predictable followup to reasonably-interesting predecessor Review: "OK. I'm going to write a novel that has dinosaurs in it and will sell a lot of copies in airport bookstores - and quickly be made into a movie!" That's the only way I can assume Michael Crichton was thinking when he sat down to write the thoroughly derivative, totally predictable, and only vaguely entertaining "The Lost World". Like most Crichton novels, "The Lost World" can be divided into three acts: Act 1: In which an intriguing scientific premise is laid out, our Sympathetic Main Characters are introduced, and the Main Plot Action is set in motion. A Major Villain may also make an appearance. Act 2: In which any Major Villains not introduced in Act 1 appear; complications occur in the Intriguing Scientific Premise, and Sympathetic Main Characters are put in danger. Act 3: In which Sympathetic non-Major Characters get eaten/dismembered/otherwise killed. Major Villains suffer their just deserts. All Sympathetic Main Characters survive, but not without suffering some Serious Setbacks which Make Them Think about the experiences they've just had. Sound like a formula? Of course it is. And "The Lost World" is an excellent example of what it is- a bad sequel novel disguised as science fiction. It's not worth the reading by anyone looking for any sort of innovative thinking about dinosaurs, much less about science fiction. A complete waste of [money].
Rating: Summary: The Dinos Have Returned Review: Was one near death experience with the dinosaurs on the island of "Jurassic Park" enough? I guess not, for the scienctists set out for another adventure. They are going to the classfied island known as "Site B." Of coarse the dinosaurs are on a rampage, putting the scienctists lives in danger again. Even characters you thought were dead turn out to be alive and well. Just reading the story of the scienctists attempting to defeat the dinosaurs and escape the island is fun, even though it was read once before. Not all characters are likeable, but at least some of them end up in the stomachs of hungry raptors. On a positive note, the ending to the book is a lot better than the movie. "Jurassic Park: The Lost World" is not near the brillance of the first one, but still satisfies.
Rating: Summary: The Lost World is more than just a sequel. Review: The Lost World is one of Crichton's best. It is every bit as good as Jurassic Park. If you've only seen the movie, read the book too. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: BOOOORING! Review: Jurassic Park was a truly thrilling novel. Sadly,I cannot say the same about the Lost World. I read the first few chapters, and they were pretty dang good. Buuuuut, It lead me to get my hopes up about the book. I got a little farther into it,and I was so bored,a fly on the ceiling caught my attention. IT WAS EVEN BETTER THAN THE BOOK. I was reading it a gain a few weeks later,I ACTUALLY FELL ASLEEP! During Jurassic Park,I could've been anywhere in the book ,and had a herd of wild Elephants run through the house,I wouldn't even care. Bottom line,IT (was bad) ROYALLY! IT WAS A PURE WASTE OF (money)!
Rating: Summary: Even if you haven't read the first, you'll be disappointed Review: I read this book about 20% of the way through and then got so bored. I tried to hypnotize myself into reading it, put myself in boring situations so I would be forced to read it, but none of that worked. It was okay, most parts were easy to follow, but hype and sequels and prequels and great expectations just killed this one. When I first read Jurassic Park, it was after seeing the movie. Reading a plot that was so dissimilar to the movie was mind-boggling, because you do have to admit the movie was good. So the movie ruined that book a bit. Then, after reading Jurassic Park, I didn't know what to expect from The Lost World. I actually was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. But in truth, the premise itself along with the rest of the book just does not make sense. First of all, why does anyone want to go back to the island? It's dangerous as hell. It's overrun, infested. Second, why don't they bring heavy equipment when they come back instead of just cattle prods and some rifles? Why not better weapons and equipment for survival? Finally, why the second movie? Hell... why are they making a third? I thought and still think the first movie was great. I have the VHS tape of that and I've seen it probably more than 10 times. The success of the Lost World was just like shooting your horse at point blank range and then trying to ride it while it's dead on the ground. Jurassic Park III is like trying to pull the reins on this massive, maggot-infested, jungle-devoured, forbidden horse to get it to move. If anyone's horse was dead apparently Steven Spielberg didn't think that anyone should get off of it. The success of this monstrous (no correlation intended) franchise just ruins the Lost World and maybe even the original Jurassic Park itself. I rate this book 4 stars and not 1 because I know that it's really better than hype proclaims it to be. If we pretended for a moment that there weren't any trademarked dinosaurs and people didn't care so much about fake computer animation, then we'd see that the Lost World is an okay novel. It's a sequel and it's readable. But it's still only a sequel.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Book With Great Action and Suspense Review: Michael Chrichton's The Lost World is one of the best novels that I have ever read. The book contains beautifully described scenes that will definitely catch every reader's attention. The second that I started reading the novel, I was pulled in and it kept me busy for almost two weeks. Not one chapter is boring. This book is 431 pages so it is pretty long. Since it is long, you will enjoy it for a long duration of the time. I know I did. This book keeps you in suspense from the beginning to the very end. My most favorite part of this book is that the dialogue is very realistic. There is profanity and other realistic dialogue. It's all a part of the entertainment of this novel. There is an excellent story line connected to the storyline of Jurassic Park. I saw the movie made for this book and even though it was a decent movie, the book was exceedingly better. If you liked the movie, then you will love this novel. I would recommend this book from teens to adults because of the profanity and the violence. If you are a fan of novels with good stories and a lot of action and violence, then you should definitely buy this book.
Rating: Summary: The Lost World Review: The Sequel the sequel, everyone was looking forward to the sequal of the mega box office hit JURRASIC PARK. And the sequel really did come out. The secret castrophe that happened in Jurrasic Park 6 years ago, was about to be unleshed to this group of scientists lead by Ian Malcolm who is going back again because of this rumor that was going around, something as survived back there in the LOST WORLD * Jurrasic Park.* This book really starts out slow, but as you read on, the book gradually picks you up, and when the action starts, you go on for a ride. The ride that you try to get off but you can't, the ride that you try to stop, but you can't. Right after i finished reading this book, it made me want to rent the movie to watch it, and I did. The raptor chases from the movie is the exact, or nearly the picture i get from reading the book, so if you are a Jurrasic Park lover, you will sure love this book and or love the movie as well soon. So for the Jurrasic Park lovers and dinosaur lovers out there, read this book, it is high recommended by me. You can encounter these dinosaurs with just simply picking up the book and page by page, you'll get familiar with these creatures that once set foot on Earth Millions of years ago. So again for the JP lovers and dino lovers, read this book and you won't regret.
Rating: Summary: Fun Book Review: The book was better then the movie even without the visuals you get on the big screen. In my opinion this is really this authors best area, action packed fiction. You always get a good book from this author and he delivered with this one. I know the book is the next in line and written just to get a new movie out, but the book is an old fashion page-turner. If you are looking for fiction to keep your mind of heavy topics then this book is a good one to start with. It is light, easy to read and moves fast. The story is developed and fun. This guy does not write heavy, Noble Prize worthy work, just fast passed fun.
