Rating: Summary: OK if you haven't read Jurassic Park Review: I read this book about a year and a half ago, well before the movie came out. I absolutely loved the original Jurassic Park and it ranks as one of my most favorite books. But frankly, some stories just don't need sequels. Jurassic park is one of those stories. "The Lost World" gives me the impression of a forced sequel that was only done for the sake of having a sequel (in other words for the money). "The Lost World" makes up situations that were clearly not true by the first book. The most obvious is the island. In Jurassic Park, it was clear that Isle Nublar was the only island possessed by INGEN, but in The Lost World another island magically appears which was also used by the company. Also, as many other readers have noted, Malcolm was clearly killed off in the first book, while somehow he comes back to life to be the main character in The Lost World. As it tries to force these situations to work, it also reuses the situations present in Jurassic Park. If you have read Jurassic Park then you will find this book annoying. If you haven't read JP then you may enjoy this book. But if you haven't read either then I would go with Jurassic Park. It is a lot more logical than this book.
Rating: Summary: A huge waste of time. Review: I have read "Jurassic Park" at least four times, and love every scene, every character, every nuance. Therefore I was very excited about this sequel. Unfortunately, Crichton reused every scene (on a different island, of course), every character (with different names, of course), and there was precious little nuance in this mixed bag of bad writing. Even when Crichton gives up on character and goes straight to "idea" ("Andromeda Strain" is a perfect, gripping example) he's generally interesting. Here, even the "idea" seemed forced and lacking.
Rating: Summary: DON'T SEE THE MOVIE, READ THE BOOK, IT WAS BETTER Review: The only reason I give this book a 7 is because it takes too long to get going. Once it does, it just don't stop. At first I thought there was no way I was going to read this book because it was too slow. BELIEVE ME IT AIN'T SLOW! If you saw the movie and didn't read the book, you got gipped. The movie sucked and was not worthy of the title. Read the book. That's all I gotta say about that... P.S. If you thought the movie was a massacre, just wait til you read this!
Rating: Summary: Lost Cause Review: The sequel to Jurassic Park opens with one of the worst examples of a writer selling out that you are likely to find. Ian Malcolm, who was very definitely and thoroughly killed in the first book, is resurrected. The excuse given is too lame to describe. The reason for it is obvious enough, he wasn't killed in the movie and there is going to be a sequel. The ironic thing is that none of the other characters from the first book so much as make an appearance, despite being more interesting and likable. Malcolm's purpose in this book, as in the first, is to deliver long monologues of pseudoscientific bibble-babble, all sufficiently out of the depth of the average reader to make him feel that this must all be very true and deep. In reality, Crichton knows pitifully little about modern science, a fact which he give away pretty blatantly in one scene where one of the characters finds a graduated glass pipette and identifies it as "the kind used in laboratories everywhere in the world." Which would be fine if the book was set about thirty years ago. The rest of the cast consists of the rich, obnoxious paleontologist who organizes the expedition, a behavioral biologist who serves as the love interest for Malcolm and is one of the few likable characters in the book, a retired ME professor who built the vehicles, his assistant, and two junior high kids who were helping the paleontologist (another area in which the writer shows himself to be ignorant is the forms that pre-teen cruelty takes.) There are also some bad guys, employees of the evil biotech company, Biosyn (nice subtlety there.) Apart from being good for playing Count The Plotholes this is actually an entertaining book. There's a lot of action and no thinking required on the part of the reader. The plot, while unoriginal, is gripping and the writing style doesn't make one cringe. I would like to pan it, since Crichton seems intent on destroying the biotech industry, but the truth is that I read it in a day.
Rating: Summary: A very good book Review: I liked it actully I love all of Micheal Crichton's books
Rating: Summary: This is a really bad sequel! Review: When I began to read this book, I was expecting a lot more from it, but it was basically a rewrite of Jurassic Park (and how did Malcom get back when Muldoon knew he was dead?!) . Mr. Crichton, maybe you should write this book all over again.
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!! Review: I might not have read many of books by Michael Crichton but with what I've read made me think that he is a great writer and now afer reading the lost world I think that's he is the perfect writer. It show's that Michael had done alot of reasearch before writing the book as in the book he clearly explains the basic concepts of Chaos, Extinction and Evolution theories. Such things put into a book might bore a few people out there but if you want to be able to read a book that's going to make you smarter this is it. The story for the book is great and I can find only one fault, and that is the first part of the book were just a little too slow. I know that the begining set's up the whole book but this needed more pep. But once the book moves onto the island and you know who the characters are and their place in the book it becomes a great adventure. This book is action packed and will leave you hanging until the end.
Rating: Summary: If you liked the movie you'll love this book!!! Review: Like I said above,if you liked the movie then you'll love this book and even if you didn't like the movie you'll like this book. When Crichton brought back the charecter of Lewis Dogson he did everybody a faver. The book has so much depth and so much of a mysterious feeling to it it's unbeliveable.I especially liked the Carnosaur's.If you ask me Micheal Crichton should stop writing books for a while and direct Jurassic Park and The Lost World the way they should have been done.BASED ON THE BOOK WORD FOR WORD!!!!
Rating: Summary: NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE! Review: The Lost World is a great book it may not be as good as the first one but it is good. I have a couple problems with it though one Ian is dead if Micheal wanted Ian to be in the sequel of Jurassic Park he shouldn't have killed him. Two what is up with the movie, it is a piece of crap if you have read the book and think the movie is going to be the least bit like it, boy are you in for a surprise. The reason they go to the island isn't the same. And the 2nd most important character isn't even in the movie. But it is still a very very very good book read it soon!
Rating: Summary: Crichtons best book yet! Perfect for everyone over 10 Review: Crichton has stunned me yet again with his amazing science knowledge and incredible capability of writing novels. In my opinion this is better than the prequel JURASSIC PARK. Definatlely a perfect 10.
