Rating: Summary: Still unsure about the book Review: Before I picked up The Lost World, I had just finished reading "Jurassic Park" & watched the movie 'Jurassic Park'. I decided to come read the reviews that other reviewers had left before I finally decided to read "The Lost World". I was unsure if I would like it or not, some people loved the sequel and some seemed to hate it. Unfortunatly after I have read Lost World, I am still unsure if I like it or not.I dislike it as a sequel for lots of reasons. First the reason that everyone claims is that Ian Malcom doesn't make it in the first book, and here he is in this book, a central character. Secondly, in Jurassic Park (JP), Ian was a 'mathematician', and I don't remember when he decided to become a 'palentologist', because he suddenly had an incredibly extensive knowledge of dinosaurs -- even ones he didn't encounter in JP. Thirdly, I was darn sick of Malcom in Lost World because he harps on and on and on about science and how scientists are bad and how they are changing the world, even more than he does in JP. After reading both books, I don't want to deal with Ian Malcom anymore. I also hate how Chrichton eats his words about dinosaurs. In JP I remember a scene that Grant is holding Lex very still and the big Tyrannasaur doesn't see them because they are not moving. In Lost World, that theory isn't good enough anymore and someone dies by doing the same thing (a bad guy, so I suppose Chrichton thinks it's okay). He tries to gloss it over, and this dissapointed me. Finally, the cast of dinosaurs wasn't that different. Most of the interaction is with 'T-Rex', raptors and 'compys'. The book isn't terrible, however. I found myself reading it and enjoying it even after I disliked the Malcom beginning. This may have been because of the part about dinosaurs that I am interested in more -- the extinction. There is a lot of talk about the extinction of the dinosaurs. Chrichton tries to stretch your imagination and come up with a theory that is different than most of the theories out there about why the dinosaurs died. I liked the descriptions of behavior of the animals, which is the main focus of the book. I thought that the addition of a character who was knowledgeable in 'dangerous animal' behavior was good (Sarah Harding). The kids were definatly less annoying than the last book. So, my advice -- read it to find out if you will like it or hate it. I still can't decide.
Rating: Summary: Great, but not fantastic Review: The Lost World was very good book, but not fantastic. In Jurassic Park, everything was described well, and made a reader get an interest in the book. But some parts of The Lost World wasn't described well. And the story was similar to Jurassic Park so it wasn't very interesting as Jurassic Park was to me. But, it gave more horror than Jurrasic Park and few parts of the book was very cool.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not as good as Jurassic Park. Review: This book was twice as long as Jurassic Park. About half of it could have been edited out, there was that much filler in it. Many parts were excellent but they were infused with often tedious detail that detracted from the action. The first half of the book tended to drag on for a bit. The second half was much, much better. Still, all in all, a good read.
Rating: Summary: Near perfect sequel for Jurassic Park Review: Michael Crichton throughout his writings has brought together a wealth of knowledge and understanding to the technology that his characters use. This is one thing that has always kept me coming back to his work. The Lost World is no exception. It starts off a bit slow but once the action picks up, it doesn't quit until the end. It will be a book you'll want to read again as soon as you get the chance. If you like any of Michael Crichton's work, then you will definitely want to have a look at this.
Rating: Summary: The best sequel to a book ever. Review: If you thought that Jurassic Park was cool you'll love the sequel The Lost World. This one digs deeper into the company than the first one did and answers a lot of questions I had over the first one. A great storyline, charadters, and setting make for a heck of a thrill ride.
Rating: Summary: Michael Crichton Review: When I read words from Michael Crichton, I can visualize them all. I imagine visually the entire story. His stories are technical and flowing. This book is highly recommended. I won't bother to tell you about the book because you should read without knowing to make it more exciting. This book is for techincal thinkers who can visualize.
Rating: Summary: a disappointment Review: I expected this to be just as good as Jurassic park but boy was I in for a surprise. This book is shameful compared to Jurassic Park. I found this book to be uninteresting and a little weird. One of the first problems is that ian Malcom died! I found his miraculous recovery very hard to swallow. I also think it would have been better if the dinosaurs somehow survived on the original island. Also, why did he change the chaos theory to the 'complexity' thoery! I didn't have a big problem with that I just found it kind of weird. The ending was also pretty bad too with the disease and all. I found it very anticlimatic. I also so think that they should have included another character from Jurassic Park along with Dr. Malcom. And, in Jurassic Park the T-REx couldn't see you if you stood still but in Lost World that suddenly changes! I did like the new dinosaurs that were added and of course I thought Crichton's illustrations were interesting. Overall it's not that bad of a book but it can't compare to Jurassic Park.
Rating: Summary: I don't think Mike Crichton wrote this book. Review: After reading Jurassic Park,I became interested in other works by Michael. I read his earlier works and I was pleased to read them all.I guess I became too excited because I couldn't wait until The Lost World came out. After I purchased the book, I opened it up to the first page, and I could not beleive what I was reading. Ian Malcolm.....a little..... what?I think I read that sentence a million times hoping that it would change or maybe I read it wrong the first 999,999 times.I forced myself to read the entire book.It really isn't a bad book. I feel this book was rushed. After the tremendous success of Jurassic, the pressure was on to write a sequel. After reading his previous novels, his style of writing wasn't present in The Lost World. It was like someone else wrote this book.
Rating: Summary: Buy it and read it now!! Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read, better than Jurrasic Park. The best bit for me was Darwins thoery of evolution explained and the character Levine. If you like dinosours and Jurrasic Park then you will love this it is ten times better.
Rating: Summary: "Lost" World Review: Okay, even when ignoring the fact that Ian Malcolm is alive the second time around, one is hard pressed to find anything truly "good" about this sequel. With a mediocre plot ("let's go find us some dinosaurs and let 'em loose in California! Maybe they'll eat Disneyland!) and almost no character development, it makes me wonder just how many dollar signs it takes to forget how to write a decent story.
