Rating: Summary: One of Demille's Best! Review: This is a great book by Nelson Demille. It is a Vietnam War novel, it is a courtroom drama, it is a mystery, and it deals with guilt. This book is great on so many levels. So many great characters. So much sexual tension. The great thing about the pre-Plum Island and Lion's Game Nelson Demille was how different his novels used to be. They ranged from social commentary like gold Coast, to Cold War spies like Charm School to Word of Honor which revolves around a court-case. This book kept me interested from cover to cover. Anyone who wants to know why Demille is such a great writer could start here. This is a great novel.
Rating: Summary: Early Demille effort; his later stuff is better Review: Having read and enjoyed other books by the author, I found an abridged taped version of this one--and so jumped at the opportunity to listen to it . . . wasn't terrible, just not as good as some of his other novels . . . the other problem I had with it: I sort of knew where it was going, right from the beginning.
Rating: Summary: ANOTHER DEMILLE WINNER Review: I implore u to read this book. It is terrific. 700+ pages and I promise you you will want more. Ben Tyson's wit, his lawyer, his wife, the need to know more...it's everything you can ask for in a thriller. We have a need to know throughout the entire book. Why did it REALLY happen, what will happen next, who is invloved behind the scenes....TRUST ME ON THIS ONE....you will ove it especially if you are a fan of DeMille's.
Rating: Summary: Amazing read Review: I could not put this book down which came at the expense of reading for law school. I served 6 years in the Marine Corps and although I love novels with a military bent, I always take them with a grain of salt. The book is true to its characters. There is no fairy tale unrealistic ending. The authors does a fabulous job of unraveling the story a bit at a time. It also is good at addressing the political issues that invade military decisions at the upper echelons.
Rating: Summary: Good almost til the last drop Review: This book started out much the same as all the other Demille books I've read in the past, Great. He draws you into the life of the protagonist, shows you his flaws, makes you laugh with him, shows his world crumbling around him, all the while telling you a tragic story of war. As the books goes on and on the length doesn't bother you at all. Demille takes you on this 750 page journey and you're soaking it all in, then it just ends. One paragraph ends a 750 page book, and that's it. I'll admit I felt cheated, and the ending really cost this book 2 stars off my rating. It's not that what happened at the end was bad for the story, but that was it, it just ended. I guess a person prone to psychobable would say I needed closure after investing this much time in a book. If you want to read a masterpiece read Gold Coast, by far Demille's best work.
Rating: Summary: Absorbing Review: The subject was very interesting. however when it comes to report military actions, it drags on and on, I found that unnecesary
Rating: Summary: Classic page turner Review: I could not put this book down until I finished it. The main character is someone anybody could identify with and the plot is fast paced and interesting. Definitely Demille's best work.
Rating: Summary: A book for those who have forgotten the pleasure of reading Review: I had the good fortune to see the film Caine Mutiny recently. Word of Honor has often been compared to this seminal work and while it is easy to see where such comparison arises I personally found Word of Honor to be better! Unlike Caine Mutiny, I found myself feeling a degee of empathy for all the characters in De Mille's book. Also, the author is highly insightful with regard to human nature and the way we DO respond to situations rather than the way we would like to respond. Combine this with a sharp wit and blistering narrative and you have without doubt one of the best books of the last decade.
Rating: Summary: Intriging, could not put down, educational, fantastic Review: If you are looking to be captivated and entertained, as well as educated and intrigued, read this book. Each and every chapter is well written and Nelson Demille does a great job all the way to the end. The story is about a really interesting man whose past includes an incredible experience in the Vietnam War. It gave me an appreciation for those who were in the war, including my dad. Also, it's neat how the book goes back and forth from the present to his past. This is the first Nelson Demille book I read, since then I've read Plum Island, Gold Coast, and Cathedral. Just purchased Generals Daughter and Charm School. His books are awesome!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: DeMille has written a wonderful mystery that makes your heart race. This is his best!
