Rating: Summary: saddening Review: Not what I expected. Dark, graphic, depressing, drawn out. But there is something that remains with you---I definitely did not leave with a good feeling about midwifery. Deaths, breakdowns, cancer. This is not the book to raise your spirits. I think that most of Oprah's books are pretty dark. What's wrong with some sunshine?
Rating: Summary: Good Read .... Page Turner .... Review: Really enjoyed this. Characters were real and complicated which added to the ever changing plot. Not just a surface mother/daughter relationship piece or just a coming of age book. Definitely worth the read. And favorable to midwives even in such a high tech age ....
Rating: Summary: Midwives is a wonderfully told story. Review: Midwives is a wonderfully told story with with a beautiful telling of a mother dausghter relationship and the struggle a daughter has to face when her mother is charged with murdering one of her patients. The telling of the trial is both suspensful and emotional. The book shows the strength and courage of a fourteen year old girl and her mother. I reccomend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a wonderful story.
Rating: Summary: Oprah is a jerk! Review: Oprah is so retarded. Even though I heard this was a good book, I give it a 1 because oprah reccommended it. Oprah is the reincarnation of the devil. She is terrible. By the way, I work in a library. so there.
Rating: Summary: Better Than I Thought It Was Going To Be! Review: I was told this book was about hippies and drugs and was not very realistic. I didn't think that that was the case at all. Let me put it this way. I was so into the book that I read it in 2 days.
Rating: Summary: Plain and simple BAD! Review: I don't understand the positive reviews on this book. I didn't think it was worth my time. I had to force myself to finish it. I wonder if it might be that Oprah recommends the book, she loved it, they should too. I'm able to form my own opinion.
Rating: Summary: A most enthralling book, well-written with an excellent flow Review: I found this to be a work of great quality and well researched. Sometimes it was difficult for me to believe the author was neither a 14 year-old girl or a midwife. His medical accounts are thorough and correct, and he has a simply wonderful way of capturing the essence of the characters.
Rating: Summary: Slow as well as underdeveloped characters. Review: I usually love Oprah's suggestions. This however, was not one of the better picks. I felt as though it took forever to get to the body of the book and then the rush ending that followed let me flat.
Rating: Summary: This one is definitely worth a good, long, look! Review: Sybil Danforth is a memorable character, as is her daughter Connie, the narrator of the story. While Bohjalian's detailed account of a midwife on trial for involuntary manslaughter is at times tedious, the end result is well worth the effort.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating Review: Really enjoyed the way the story was told through the eyes of the daughter. Surprise ending!
