Rating: Summary: Read deeper for the rewards of Midwives Review: What I found most appealing about Midwives, was not so much the dramatic pull of the center story of the birth young Veil Bedford gone bad; but the storytelling from the point of view of the midwife's daughter Connie. As she narrates the author does not only a remarkable job of conveying how Connie felt as a young teenager when the story is unfolding to her, but how she views the events and charaters that came into her life that year as an adult. The openess with which she searches for the truth and to understand the ways in which her mothers actions set into motion a chain of events that changes Connie Danforth's life and views forever. Excellent stories; both of them.
Rating: Summary: Pulled me in immediately. Exciting, moving and wonderful. Review: I was quite impressed with this book. It grabbed me from the beginning and I didn't want to put it down. I felt the daughter told an insightful and heartfelt story. Nice mix of generational viewpoints. It was real and emotional, and I was quite surpised it was written by a man!
Rating: Summary: A gripping story -- I couldn't put it down. Review: Highly recommended. Enough has been said about the plot, so I won't repeat it. I found myself totally engrossed in the story and sharing in each character's personal struggle. While I couldn't wait to get to the end to see how everything turned out, I found myself wishing it would go on and on.
Rating: Summary: Not terrible - but certainly not worth the hype! Review: I was quite disappointed. The story meandered and dragged with no apparent direction and the daughter sometimes irritated with her dramatisation of the most inconsequential events. If you read every 3rd chapter and the final one of course, you would probably enjoy the book much more!
Rating: Summary: Great Drama! Review: I really enjoyed this book. The description on the cover is right - you will stay up very late in order to finish it. The story told from the perspective of the daughter works well, and the story moves along, taking you right with it. I thought the best part was the last page - but don't peek!
Rating: Summary: Captivating and entertaining. Review: Midwives is an excellent novel. Easy to read, yet written with explicit detailed descriptions that bring to life every moment. Also, I think the midwives are a very controversial issue worth reading about.
Rating: Summary: Average Review: Not a great book, but not a waste of time either. I agree with another reviewer that it was "uneven".
Rating: Summary: Tedious Review: "Midwives" is terribly over-rated. I found "I Know This Much is True, "The Triumph and the Glory", and "Mother Of Pearl" far more enjoyable. They each conveyed a sense of wonder, offered captivating characters, and were blessed with plots worthy of bestsellers, unlike Midwives, which just drifted rudderless until it happened to hit something, then drifted anew.
Rating: Summary: Riveting, couldn't put itdown Review: I just finished Midwives after waiting on a hold list at the library for months! I read it in three days; couldn't put it down. It is rich and suspenseful. A good summer read.
Rating: Summary: Awesome book Review: It's an amazing book with many a plot twist and excellent characters. I couldn't put it down I brought it everywhere just so I could keep reading. Such quality, it was great and you learn so much about the craft as well. Anyone who reads this book will love it, but women especially
