Summary: Midwives is an excellent book. I highly recommend it.
Review: This was the first time I read anything by this author and I truly loved this novel. Captivating and spell-binding, I read the majority of the book in one sitting. A truly excellent read.

Summary: Absorbing--Right to the End
Review: I enjoyed this book and thought it a thoroughly good read. Although I was very sympathetic with the main character, I wondered why she resisted more medical training if she was as devoted to the process as she seemed to be. The ending was chilling, but unrealistic; no prosecutor would have taken that chance on the daughter. There were no villians in this book; I thought all the characters were good people faced with a terrible tragedy and doing what they thought was right. I would definitely recommend it.

Summary: Not Good to Read While Pregnant!
Review: When I saw this book, I anticipated that this would be about witch doctors threatening women with their kids being denied an Ivy League education of they didn't breast feed. It wasn't like that at all! It realy raised some thought provoking questions in my mind as to "What if Y-2K happens and I can't get to town and go into labour?" and "What if I am out hiking and can't get help if I go into labour?" These came up at 2:30AM and I awoke my loving husband to discuss them!

But the book raises some important questions and I found myself bouncing back and forth on where I stood on the issues in the book, not only on what I would want for myself, but on what a good friend, who is studying to be a midwife, would do if put into the situation.

DO NOT READ IT WHILE PREGNANT. But if you are into a thought-provoking novel that really rocks, buy this and be ready to discuss it. Better yet, buy a copy for a friend to sit and chat over it!

Summary: One of the Best Books I've Ever Read
Review: I am, by definition, a serious bookworm. I devour books like one would consume their favorite desserts. Even a non-bookworm who simply enjoys a good, lingering story must read this one.

Summary: loved the book!!!!!
Review: This was definitely a page turner I could not put it down. I am a nurse and think that home births are the most reckless thing that one can do to an infant. It really surprised me that I felt smypathy towards Sybil. The other surprise is that the author is a male. This book is a must read!!

Summary: Mesmerizing!
Review: I loved this book. As a pregnant mother of four, the idea of midwivery and home birth really hit home for me. I found that I couldn't put this book down, toting it to soccer fields, relatives homes and even the grocery store. It's a must read!

Summary: Not a bad read if you can stomach the begining
Review: I was surprised by the ending of the book, and a little concerned. An okay book, thankfully it got better as I read on. Have patience, the book does pick up once things go very wrong with one of the widwife's patients.

Summary: good premise, bad writing
Review: The premise was so interesting that it kept me going to the end, but in spite of the writing rather than because of it. (The first 50 pages are especially weak.) The daughter's narration detracted from the plot and the author's language just kept hitting false notes. I was disappointed that a plot with so much potential was mishandled.

Summary: Taped Version of MIDWIVES - Listened to it on Tape
Review: The taped version of MIDWIVES was well produced. The sound was clear and the actor's reading was quite professional. The book on tape was a bit of a let-down possibly because it was much too abridged. I travel a lot by auto and prefer to hear the entire book rather than a boiled-down version. It was too short, probably leaving out a lot of the emotion, leaving the listener short of the feelings we read books for. I think that if you have time to hear a book on tape, it should be more than a couple of hours long. Otherwise we can see a movie based on a book which also requires editing out a lot of the author's text.

Summary: ASTONISHING!
Review: This book was the best read I've enjoyed in a long time. I could not fathom how a man could write from women's perspectives so well, but he wrote the most amazing book on my shelf. I would recommend this to the world - everyone should try it!
