Rating: Summary: Why oh why...... Review: I got 25 pages into this (...) book before putting it down. I probably will not pick it up again. It was a free book from a publisher friend and so it was no big loss. Let me ask you a question - why is it that an author feels the need to introduce characters only to kill them off almost immediately? What's the point of taking the reader down that road? Particularly when the characters die seemingly pointless deaths. Why bother dragging the reader through the muck and mire if it goes nowhere? That's not good story telling - that's pure frustration. They always say that an author should grab the reader's attention within the first few pages of a book - make the reader WANT to read more. But if the author kills off characters with little or no thought, if their lives that he introduces are meaningless, then why should we - as readers - care about the characters? It really does not set a good precedence for the rest of the book. I may, out of desperation, try to finish this book - but - I doubt it.
Rating: Summary: Deep Fun! Review: Great adventure! I think Jack Kirkland could be a recurring character. The story did tend to bog down in a couple of places but it was ultimately more satisfying than the plot of "Subterranean" (which got silly at times). It was believable without too much "suspension of disbelief." The only negative I may have to offer is that it seems every undersea adventure story has to bring out the giant squid. It's like, "OK, time for the giant squid bit." Fortunately, that part is very short. Overall, a great read. I can't wait to get my hands on "Excavation." I hope it's as good.
Rating: Summary: Deep Fathom Review: This book has everything--science fiction, mystery, adventure, and an intriguing plot line that moves forward at breakneck speed. I couldn't put it down, and that's something for a 450-page book! There are many subplots, and Mr Rollins weaves them all together into a satisfying climax. The book is a little bit Tom Clancy, a bit of Clive Cussler, and a good plot line that is all Mr. Rollins' work! I truly loved this book and can't wait to share it with my husband and son-in-law.
Rating: Summary: Uggh. Review: Sorry folks: cornball dialogue, tired old SF elements, and a cop out, made-for-TV ending. Unredeemable.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! Review: James Rollins best yet by a long shot. Starts fast and never lets up. Not a dull moment. This will make a great movie and I think there is little doubt that it will become one. I can't wait for his next story and will be surprised if he can better this effort. Finally, an ending that befits the rest of the book by enhancing the story instead of disappointing the reader.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I loved this book. It had style and was so interesting I couldn't put it down. Read it in two day. I love the underwater and caves. But the super computer was a great touch. It was adventure from the beginning to end. With a great ending.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing and weak! Review: James Rollins is apparently headed in the wrong direction in his progression as an author. His outstanding first novel, "Subterranean", gave us all a glimpse of his great promise. Rollins' 2nd book, "Excavation", while a "slow starter" picked up speed and turned out to be a satisfying read. Unfortunately, none of the qualities of the first two books make it into his latest novel, "Deep Fathom". Expecting to find a book that I "couldn't put down", I found instead a book that I had an extremely difficult time "picking up"! Oh, the premise is interesting enough, ("the first eclipse of the millenium uncovers a mysterious underworld city") but it loses steam fast. The interesting characterization found in the book just can't carry a weak, uninteresting, and basically unbelievable plot. The pace is tedious and there is too much talk and not enough action! Rarely have I found a book that I looked so forward to reading that I was so disappointed with! Here's hoping that Rollins regains the magic that he displayed in "Subterranean" and gives future efforts likes "Deep Fathom" the "deep six"!
Rating: Summary: good story, mediocre writing Review: I found this book to be engaging, but in spite of the fact that the story had some great elements I wasn't really impressed with Rollins' writing. He's not quite a Clive Cussler, although he seems very much to want to be.
Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL!! Review: Deep Fathom was the best story I've read all year! What really facinated me was that the places are real places, and RongoRongo is an actual language found in the places noted in the book. I'm a very picky reader, but Rollins current book puts him in the same category as Cook and Koontz. This book will capture, and keep, your attention throughout. I'm thrilled to hear that Rollins has taken the year off to work on his next book, and I can't wait to read it--so WRITE FAST, JIM!!
Rating: Summary: Amazing Adventure Review: Adventure, romance, action, scifi, and more adventure all wrapped into one amazing book! From the first chapter to the last, this book is filled with non-stop action. Assasins, explosions, kidnapping, sea monsters, underwater battles, and global destruction, just to name a few, are all elements intertwined in the story of two interesting characters and their friends. Jack Kirkland, an ex-navy SEAL and astronaut, and Karen Grace, a college professor in Japan, discover an amazing secret. The characters are well-developed, the plot is exciting, and there are too many climaxes to count. Buy this book! You will be glad you did!
