Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: True exploration and adventure writing it's best. Review: This a very good book. I have been captivated by the mysteries of our world and existance for as long as I can remember. I always felt a longing and desire to go and get a degree in history, archaeology or something of that nature. There had seemed there was a time when adventure writing was on a downwrd spiral. Some good books come out every once in a while, but this is the best novel I have read on ADV/EXP since Clive Cusslers, "Sahara". I'ts something about the mysteries of life, culture and long lost - or perehaps not - civilizations. James Rollins combines great talent for buliding up suspense and a climax that is just as liberating as it is scary and just when you think your safe...He possesses almost an H.P. Lovecraft quality in his writing. and not to mention he also burats forth with the creativity and and terror such as masters as Dean Koonts and Arthur Machen. I'm not going to tell you ANY of the basis and plot itself, but rest assured you wil be asking yourself at night, lying in yoiur bed - whispering to yourself, "This could really happen". A GREAT read, I recommendit to everyone. It is really a good book. Enjoy Jason, Dallas
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Indiana Jones type adventure Review: This book is on a par with the old Hardy Boys Mysteries. It has cardboard characters, and was pretty bad. However, I must say, I did read it to the end in one sitting, and what more can you ask of an author? I might even be willing to give the author another try. I was orginally going to say the plot was predictable, but who could imagine a catholic church full of cold blooded killer priests and an actual inquisitional torture chamber (with blacksmith type torturer, even!). Why would they have such a place? "To keep in practice" as the priests say in the book! I fault the editor, however, more than the author, who is fairly new at the business. All it would have taken was a stress on this group being a separatist, crazy faction, and it would have been more believable, and less crude. But, hey, if you want a couple of hours of adventure reading, with an interesting premise, it is worth that.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Ultimate Page-turner Review: I have to admit I really liked this book! The reason I only gave it four stars was because some of the plot is a bit far-fetched and a little... odd - but when you're reading it you don't care! There's just so much action and SUSPENSE! He did such a good job of going from one "site" of the book to another that you had to keep reading. You were left at a cliffhanger every step of the way, I was so involved in one scene that I had to keep reading to get a different part so I could sleep (without being afraid!) I definately recommend reading it - it was worth it - I enjoyed it, and you will too.

Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Easy reading, simple adventure Review: This book is an easy read with a simple adventure. I thought his first book, Subterranean, was excellent. Excavation was a fun easy read, but for me it lacked the excitement and adventure I felt in his first book. The setting takes place at an ancient Inca archaeology dig the South American mountains. The story revolves around a mysterious gold like metal and a newly discovered archaeological find. Although the story starts off in the perfect setting filled with suspense, it quickly turns in to a simple easy read story. I recommend it as quick, easy read.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Adventure at its best! Review: What else could you ask for? A great mix of archeology, Mystery, and adventure. The author does a great job of developing his characters and his plot is tight and moves at a good clip. This is a great summer beach read. I have not read "Subterranean" but I guess I will have to check it out now. You might also want to check out: : "A Tourist in the Yucatan" a mystery/thriller/adventure set in the jungles and lost cities of the Yucatan.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: You've got to be kidding Review: Obviously mine is not the popular opinion, but I found Excavation to be terribly disappointing. Granted, I have not read Subterranean, so maybe I was assuming too much of Rollins as an author. Still, from the Irish character whose brogue comes and goes (and never actually convincingly), to the ridiculous conclusion, I have to say that I felt I had wasted my time. My apologies to his fans...obviously I'm in the minority. As fascinating as the peripheral images of the book were, and even at times the plot itself, I felt overall it was pretty disappointing. It gets one star for having an interesting title, and one star for the character Denal. I did like him.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Never a Dull Moment Review: I hated the fact this book came too an end. I wanted it to keep going. James Rollins won't let you be bored with his writing, he just keeps things happening. This is great to read at night especially, if you don't want to catch any sleep, it'll keep you up. Beyond summer reading fare, if you are finding yourself with nothing to do, this book will keep you happy.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Simply Dazzling! Review: This book was one rollercoater ride!Rollins was able to combine: Lost civilizations, hard science, modern-day spanish Inquisitors, monsters and a abundance of thrills and chills into a classic science fiction thriller.I also love his writing style that was atmospheric and cinematic in describing action sequences and the supremely creepy lost Inca city and a army of albino tarantulas had my skin crawling! All the ingredients are here in this potboiler: action, wonderful characters, sinister villians, and shocking last plot twist on the final page.Great Entertainment and I can't wait for the author's next book!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The Best Book Ever! Review: This is such a GREAT book! At first I was skeptical, but after I read the first page I knew I was hooked! I couldn't put the book down! Once you read a tiny bit you can't wait to see what happens next... and your always glad to find out it wasn't what you expected... but something even better! I can't believe that you can only give it 5 stars! If I could I would give it 50 stars instead of 5! I think you should go to your nearest book store and buy it!
