Summary: Fast paced
Review: This book is faced paced and fun to read. It keeps up the intrigue throughout. Interesting and unusual premise. Probably the most scary of his books to date.

Summary: Naked Monkey Mole Rats, Oh My!
Review: Naked monkey mole rats, exploding mummies, hot steamy jungle sex (well not really - just the jungle sex not really - the first two are in here)! What's not to like?

Summary: Awesome!!
Review: For those of us stuck in the everyday hum drum of life...
I had searched books stores for years trying
to find the perfect adventure writer, there are very few.
But, i have found him.
Excitement, great characters, and of course the best part..
....treasure!
I finished this book with a smile on my face, I have been a
loyal James Rollins fan ever since.

Summary: Where was the editor?.
Review: I enjoy Mr Rollings books. This one was a little predictable, but still good. What got to my nerves was the Spanish quotes, where was the editor?. Throughout the whole book we see written "El Sangre del Diablo", Sangre in Spanish is femenine, so the right way would be "La Sangre del Diablo", "Entrada" doesn't mean "Came on In", it refers to an entry, a door or something and finally I can't figure out what "Que Hiscistes" mean and I'm Spanish!.How hard can it be to loan the manuscript to somebody with command of the languaje to correct mistakes?.

Appart from that, this is an entertaining work of fiction.

Summary: Nicely written - told from various view points
Review: The author took the position of telling his story from each of the main character's point of view. Sometimes authors do this badly but James managed to do a credible job without losing his audience. The first two thirds of the book were totally riveting, unpredictable, exciting and well written. The last third of the book was kind of goofy. It strained believability and eventually lost my interest. I can put it another way... it got really goofy. But it was interesting for the first two thirds and well written... very well done suspense.

Summary: A little... simple
Review: This read more like a first book from an author. The story just seemed a little forced at times, and the dialog was a little silly. I didn't really end up caring much about the characters despite the authors obvious efforts to get me too. The fact that it was so obvious should tell you something. I did read the whole thing and it was ok. Fairly predictable, but still interesting. Somewhat of a Clive Cussler story, without the interesting characters. If I wasn't on a plane I'm not sure if I would of finished it or not. Sorry, it just didn't grab me.

Summary: Interesting idea + lousy writing = disappointing read
Review: If you're a fan of the Preston/Childs books, you might be drawn to this adventure story, but watch out. It's about as hokey as they come. From an embarrassingly bad romance between two aging archeologists to an even more embarrassing friendship between a redneck gay-basher and his new gay buddy (he learns, of course, that gays are "just like us") this book suffers from too much PC garbage, too much sappy dialogue, and too many derivative plot devices.

I was bothered by Preston's apparent endorsement of the book (his comment, "it's a real page turner," is emblazoned on the cover of the paperback). But I guess if you take Preston literally, the comment makes sense. Yes, the book is a "real page turner" -- I ended up skipping more of them than I actually read.

If you're looking for a good adventure story in the Preston/Childs mold, try "Neanderthal," or Crichton's "Timeline." Rollins just isn't a good enough writer to carry it off.

Summary: "Dig" your way through the first 100 pages...
Review: and you'll find a pretty good read. Alright...it's not the most believable premise. (believeable, hell!; this ranks right up there with "there's no travelling in the NBA", the Alien Autopsy, and "I'll still respect you in the morning...") On the other hand, if you like over-the-top "Indiana Jones-type" adventure stories, then you'll find this book very entertaining.

Character development is a little weak and in most cases, it's really hard to feel very close to "our heroes", but besides that and believability, those are the only major flaws in this book. I've got to admit that once I finally got into the story, this was a hard book to put down.

I'm not big on giving too much of the plot line away in these reviews because I hate it when somebody does that. So, suffice it to say, Rollins does a nice job keeping two plots lines going and tying them together at the end of the book. There's a lot of action in the last 300 pages and it's easy to pick out the "bad" guys in this book - a group who's usually not thought of as being "bad" guys, I might add! (I'm sure this won't be on the Pope's reading list.)

If you liked Rollins' first novel, "Subterranean", or if you enjoyed "Neanderthal" and the "Relic" books, you'll probably really enjoy "Excavation" as well. And, like a lot of novelists these days, the "door" is left open at the end of this book for a sequel. I smell "mini-series"!

Summary: Been there before
Review: James Rollins had to spend a lot of late nights watching old movies as he wrote this book because reading it felt like jumping in and out of scenes from familiar movies. First there are the obvious Raiders Of The Lost Ark scenes. Then there are there are scenes that seemed to come from The Time Machine. Throw in a touch of Star Trek: DS9, Lost Horizon, and James Bond and you've got most of the book covered.

I found it hard to finish. Had I not been traveling and in need of something to kill time, I probably wouldn't have finished it. Aside from the fact that probably 85% of the book was predictable, I found the author's refrences to the Catholic religion disturbing. His words are filled with bigotry and hatred to the point that I almost felt I was reading some hate group's propaganda. AND I'M NOT EVEN CATHOLIC.

It will have to take an exceedingly long, boring trip before I pick up another James Rollins novel.

Summary: Read this book first!
Review: I read Excavation first, then Subterranean (all in the same week). I enjoyed Excavation better due to the amount of scientific detail, and I found Subterranean's level of action to be a bit over the top at times. I give Excavation five stars, Subterranean four.
