Summary: Found myself skimming it.
Review: I liked this book, but I had to force myself to read it thoroughly. I realize that when I begin skimming or looking ahead that the book is not capturing my interest. Occasionally it might be because I just have to know how something interesting or a crisis ends up, bu in this case, I think it was just too much. Overstimulating? Unbelievable? Subterranean was much better. Although this was an entertaining read, I was just anxious to get the book done. It was a NOT a page turner.

Summary: very entertaining with a small but...
Review: I can't seem to get over the corny lines. I think Rollins' books are very exciting and well thought out but when it comes to the dialogue, things can get a little sappy. There are some comments made right after some of the characters barely escape some terrible monster or gruesome death but they always have the mind to make a wise crack or sappy comment where everyone should be saying "oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,....". However I was stuck to the book immediately and liked the story and suspense enough to give it 4 out of five.

Summary: A good adventure story
Review: This is good escapist fiction. The four stars are not meant to indicate this is in the same class as Delillo or Pynchon. Rather, they are for keeping me up late turning the pages to see what happens next. Like Subterranian, this book really kept my attention with a strong action driven plot and a lot cool, trippin ideas. The characters are not cardboard cutouts but character development is secondary to and encapsulated in the fast pace of the narrative. If you like action, science/ speculative fiction and can suppend your disbelief you'll probably like this. If you are looking for navel staring introspection look elsewhere.

Summary: Great allegory
Review: This novel has everything: it is a horror novel - it is a science novel - it is also a thriller. And it is well written. We have credible characters, we have a well developed plot, and we have action - tremendous action. The novel combines the qualities of the good old Gothic horror novel with the action thriller of today. And the author has created an excellent combination here. The old world clashes with modern civilization, and our code of values is at stake. In a way this is what happens all the time at the moment. Perhaps this is what makes this book so readable.

Summary: Couldn't put it down.
Review: If you like action...you'll like this book. And if you get this, get his other books, too.

Summary: Very good escapist read
Review: If you're willing to suspend belief and deep character development and you just want to enjoy a good adventure ala Indiana Jones, this is your book. Full of hairs breadth escapes from ancient booby traps and attacks from creatures best left undisturbed EXCAVATION provides hours of good old fashioned entertainment.

Summary: Indiana Jones meets X-Files
Review: Excavation is a very fast read, grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. This is my first James Rollins book and I was very impressed. The story and characters hold up well, and yes I do believe the catholic church is arrogent enough to TRY to bring about the second coming... The only problem I had with the book was that the climax was too short, it was almost like Rollings had just so many pages to work with, because the book just ended. But the last couple of pages are very interesting. Leaves you thinking, Could this book be the first of a series? Now if you liked Raider's or the X-Files you will enjoy this book.

Summary: A good start, but not grounded.
Review: It starts out well grounded in possible reality in a physical
sense as well as in a psychological sense concerning character
interactions, but it goes downhill and eventually reaches
the level of fantasy. A few licenses on reality would have
been okay, but this reaches a level that is hard to buy into.
Once you start reading, it is worth finishing, but before
you begin reading, you should be prepared for a story that
is difficult to swallow.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Fun but unrealistic
Review: Rollins writes this story well, but the intrigue just got more and more bizarre! It was fun, just a bit too much.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Adventurous and Exciting...
Review: Excavation is an excellent book to read. I recommend this book to anyone interested in archaeology or is willing to believe the unbelievable. The book is about a team of young archaeological students doing an excavation, trying to prove something to the world. There are deeper and darker secrets hidden there from what they are looking for however. They go through many treacheries and unrealistic things happen elsewhere. There is romance entwined into the story. The book explains everything near the end so it only leaves you in the dark some of the time. It really is an excellent book and I advise everyone to read it.
