Rating: Summary: One of his best Review: This is a great old-fashioned crime novel in the spirit of Elmore Leonard or James Ellroy. I'm surprised by the number of negative reviews of this book, and my guess is that they're the result of readers being anesthetized by run-of-the-mill, mass-produced oatmeal by the likes of Patricia Cornwell and Robert B. Parker. This book crackles like a live-wire and the timid or mediocre reader need not apply.Usually attempts to vary from an established character (read: meal ticket) fail or at best replicate that character. Not Connelly. No, none of his characters are completely sympathtic, but that's what lends this book it's complexity. It delves into the shades of gray instead of the clearer-cut black-and-white of his Harry Bosch novels. Connelly's background as a journalist is also on display here as he takes the reader inside the world of Las Vegas thieves, con-artists, and hustlers with versimilitude unparalleled by anything I've read recently. This is clearly a writer who knows his stuff. The plot moves at a breakneck pace, but is as intricately woven as a Persian rug. His characters leap off the page, and his dialogue is top-notch. This is easily one of Connelly's best works.
Rating: Summary: A real page turner Review: I overheard someone talking about this book in glowing terms and I bought it on that recommendation. This is a book that you cannot put down. Eveything from the suspense the author generates to the high tech crime was fascinating. He also cleverly leaves loose ends that come together perfectly when he reveals them. This is a 400 page book that I read in a day and a half. My wife was glad when I finished so she could get me back. This is a must read for someone who likes a book that wont let you put it down!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: Far better than any of his Harry Bosch novels, Connelly has crafted a fast-paced, ecxciting thriller that will keep you up late at night. I loved this book and was genuinely sorry to see it end!
Rating: Summary: Avoid the Void it's devoid Review: I whole heartedly agree with Reviewer: mrpennysworth from New York, NY, it's an uninteresting, cheap, run of the mill, boring story. I've read all & liked all from Michael Connelly until Void Moon. Not recommended
Rating: Summary: Save your money-wait for another Harry or a better book Review: I have read other "non Harry" books by this author and enjoyed them. This one is not worth the effort it took to retrieve it from the Library. Who cares plot, extremely unlikeable characters. I'll wait for his next book and hope for the best.
Rating: Summary: Good but a little too much 'synchronicity' Review: Michael Connelly is a predictable pleasure for those who like their crime and mystery yarns on the gritty side. An expert at depicting the conflicts generated by the intersecting interests of high rollers and bottom feeders, Connelly has turned out one successful book after another. With complex characterizations and deftly twisting plots, his books are almost all 'page turners' that grab a reader and won't let go. Void Moon, his latest book, shares many of these qualities but also has some problems. Cassi, the main character, is never fully rounded out. Much of what makes her tick - and that would explain her behavior - is left to be revealed until the end of the book. And the plot, for the most part as satisfying as any Connelly has concocted before, suffers, I believe, because of a little too much of the 'synchronicity' that the psychotic bad guy tries to set up. The attempt at irony is a bit much and because it seems contrived, deprives the ending of the punch it would otherwise have had. Also, because the bad guy is a psycho, his character is a bit too evil, too over the top, to relate to fully. And finally, anytime a plot turns to the kidnapping of a child to be used as a pawn in whatever is at stake, the book in question runs the risk of descending into melodrama. So there are some false steps here. That being said, the Connelly magic for presenting great dialogue, an interesting cast of characters and a complex plot with enough quick turns to make the reader dizzy, is all here. While not the best of Connelly's books, Void Moon is still better than the great majority of what is being turned out by other writers in this genre; and it's a good bet there will be more and better books to come.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Review: This latest work by Michael Connelly has kept me interested for about a week. I found it quite entertaining and was never bored. My only complaint is that I did not feel sympathy for any of the characters. Every one here is dirty, compared to the characters of Connelly's Harry Bosch series where the reader roots for Harry. Connelly deftly weaves a Los Angeles plot with one in Las Vegas. He also reveals an evil character in his creation of Jack Karch. I know comparisons are cheap, but I see this as a bit of an Elmore Leonard tribute book. The themes of an ex-con making one more score reminds me of Riding the Rap or Out of Sight. If you enjoy a good mystery that incorporates cultural references, especially Los Angeles, pick up this one or any of Connelly's other excellent books. I have read all of his books but Black Ice and have yet to find a dud. Thank you, Mr. Connelly.
Rating: Summary: Intense, exciting read. Smashing heroine. Review: A knockout read! I like Bosch, but Cassie is a marvelous character and I'd love to see a couple more books about her. Void Moon is very cinematic, it really rolls like a movie, very swift, very vivid. My husband cast our favorites Peta Wilson of La Femme Nikita and Kevin Spacey for our film version. Spacey doesn't usually play such a brutally physical type, but he could really bring up the hidden depths and nuance. * Quibbles - I wished Cassie had made a couple less mistakes. Plus a moon void of course means its unaspected to any planet, not one caught between Astrological houses, though it's not good either way. * If you liked this book, you might try Sandford's Night Crew, which also has an interesting heroine.
Rating: Summary: Waste of Time Review: I have read all of Connelly's books and was anxiously awaiting Void Moon. All of the characters were cliches and unlikable. The plot was thin at best and extremely predictable. Reading Void Moon was a disappointment and a waste of time. It is not reasonable to expect all of an author's to be terrific, however they should at least be worthwhile. Save your money - skip it.
Rating: Summary: Connelly rocks! Review: I was a little put off when I realized that Connelly's latest didn't feature the conflicted Harry Bosch. But my misgivings faded fast. Void Moon is VERY good. It's a page-turner of a thriller, and one that swirls around several mysteries--better even than that, though, is that Connelly's characters are marvelously drawn. Connelly just gets better with each new book. And this one's great. I'd rate it 5 stars but, hey, it ain't Moby Dick.
