Rating: Summary: A great audio book Review: Nelson Demille has been an outstanding author for many years. Ken Howard does a great job in the abridged version of UP COUNTRY. He brings the characters to life and makes the story totally intriguing and brings Viet Nam today and during the war years to life.
Books are tape are a great alternative to regular radio when you do a lot of driving. UP COUNTRY is a real winner.
Rating: Summary: DeMille once again delivers Review: I have read several novels written by DeMille. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. In UP COUNTRY Mr. DeMille once again delivers an exciting action packed adventure filled with characters who seem like real people. The book was quite long, and a lot of the filler dealing with Viet Nam and the Viet Nam war was not really necessary, but Mr. DeMille is such an expert story teller, one doesn't seem to mind all that filler. Paul Brenner, a vietnam vetern, must travel back to Viet Nam in search of a man who could rock the United States with a piece of knowledge he possesses. A female guide/companion is sent to Brenner to help keep him on track and out of trouble, or is she? Maybe she's there to make certain Brenner completes his mission. There are many twists and turns, some expected and some not so expected, in this wonderfully exciting tale. Paul is kept in the dark about the information he is after as the reader is. That was a nice touch. This book has it all, romance, adventure, suspense, comedy and a rich history of a war and country many have forgotten. I would recommend this book to anyone. It was a pleasure to read.
Rating: Summary: Classic DeMille Tour de Force Review: Nelson DeMille's finest book, hands down. "Up Country" has everything an adventure reader could ask for...in the first 200 pages!
Modern Vietnam is the setting and DeMille has his story cross over the entire country, all the while giving his readers a laser-accurate narration of each geographical location. Toss in a lead character with a platinum backstory that began in DeMille's previous work, "The General's Daughter" and a smartass wit to challenge any previous DeMille protagonist and you start to understand all of the glowing reviews this tomb received.
It's simple...buy this book and enjoy a contemporary fiction master's crowning achievement. Literary perfection.
Rating: Summary: Up Country Review: I'll leave the details of what the book is about to everyone else. I just want to say it was a great read, can't put it down kind of book. The topic is heavy, but it is an easy to read book with a lot of action and great characters. This isn't the type of book where you can guess the ending or what's coming up next as the book travels along.
Rating: Summary: Up Country Review: This is absolutely not Mr. DeMilles most entertaining novel.
However it may well be his most heart felt. The action seems a little slow at first and I was able to make an educated guess as to the outcome very early on in the story. I have given this novel a five star rating because there is a sense of reality only a real Viet Nam veteran could bring to this book. The action is intense and I could almost feel the real pain and conflict of those who served in this confused situation. I respect Mr. DeMille as a great author, but my deepest respect is for his service to this country during an unpopular conflict. Read this book and you will be a better informed american.

Rating: Summary: What's not to love? Entertainment, education, action! Review: True, I am a DeMille-ie (sans decoder ring)but he once again transports me to his set, his characters, and yes, lots of action. DeMille successfully fuses his own VietNam experiences with a great story. I felt guilty enjoying his...reparte...with Mang. I took parts of this book as an education as well as entertainment. I appreciated seeing his war experiences through Up Country. My curiosity led me to look up some of his sites. That is when I know I am having fun - I become curious. By the way, his web site states that he is available to receive th Nobel Prize. Well, c'mon to California and we will give you a Nobel Prize - real milk chocolate - unencumbered by the tedious prize money and blinding publicity. Hey, its not a twin sheep or anything. Who cashes those five foot checks anyway? Read and enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Hard to put down Review: I thourghly enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. Toward the end, I dreaded it finishing and was wanting it to go on.
I feel that it was well researched and very interesting.
