Rating: Summary: Pure Demille Development and Wit Review: I have read all of Mr. Demille's work, at least his novels. He is by far my top author for the many long airplane rides I must take. Although I am the approximate age of his character Paul Brenner, I in fact am not a Vietnam vet. But I just returned from visiting HCM and Hanoi on business.Mr. Demille is the only author who can actually make me laugh out loud while reading his books, and this one was no exception. His wit and quips between the two main characters was excellent. I grew up 'avoiding' [successfully I might add] Vietnam in the literal sense of going there and also in many other ways; so this time, 30-some-odd years later, I grew to appreciate the terrible loss of so many lives and the atrocities through DeMille's shared thoughts and experiences. The book is a 700-page development of characters, personal character, history, dealing with history in the present sense, and going home a bit different after going up country. Savor the slow and uncomfortable ride. If you don't like the ending, end it your own way.
Rating: Summary: Waiting for the Typical DeMiller Thriller Review: Up County turned out to be a bitter disappointment. Paul Brenner (reprieving his role as a U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer in DeMille's book, "The General's Daughter" ) took us along with him on his journey back to Viet Nam where he served during the Vietnamese conflict. He is now with the CID (Criminal Investigation Division) investigating the murder of a lieutenant by his commanding officer which took place 30 years ago during the Tet offensive. If I had wanted a graphic depiction of the horrors of that unfortunate war, I could have read any number of books. However, when I read DeMille, I am looking for the thrills and chills of a roller coaster like ride. Unfortunately, it took too many pages for Paul Brenner to reach his destination and too many hours for me to reach the end of this book. This won't sour me on future DeMille novels, however I waited too long for a ride that I spent way too much money for.
Rating: Summary: travelog Review: the story is slow and the novel reads like a travelog. I have really enjoyed his other novels and am alittle disapointed in this one. But, he is as good if not better then most current novelists.
Rating: Summary: Boring and unrealalistic characters, disappointed ending Review: My title says it all. Ken Howard was ok but he had nothing to work with. Come on, a smoking woman and a guy that doesn't getting together? ugh, the breath of it all, too bad the story didn't have ANY breath.
Rating: Summary: A page turner! Review: I was so excited to read DeMille's latest and could not put it down. I enjoyed the character of Paul Brenner more the second time around- Brenner has adopted much of John Corey's (Plum Island/Lion's Game) sarcasm and wry humor. Much of this novel is a description of travel through Vietnam. I do not see why this should be a complaint. It is also plot/character development. DeMille's personal experiences as a returning veteren shine through. America's actions in Vietnma are important to current events today and Up COuntry really offers greater understanding. This book brought the experiences of that place and era to light more than any other source I have come across. The suspense plot does not falter and is expertly written. Although Lion's Game remain's DeMille's best thriller Up Country is one of the best books I have read in some time!
Rating: Summary: Worthy of Honor.... Review: I have read several other Demille books, and enjoyed them. His newest book "Up Country" however, was one of his best to date. I found the book to be intriguing, thought-provoking, and suspenseful. His descriptions of Vietnam, past and present, were incredible. The character development of our hero, Paul Brenner, and his female companion, Susan....were also excellent. Demille was able to hold our interest in the "murder mystery" piece of the book while also describing vividly a veteran's experience returning to the country he'd seen as a soldier. Kudos to Demille....for having the bravery to explore the subject in written word.
Rating: Summary: Another execellent deMille (but I miss John Corey) Review: I have become a big fan of Mr. deMille but i was skeptical about Up country because I had very little interest in the Vietnam War...not only was Up Country as good as Mr. deMille's last few books, I found it very informative too.....but I miss John Corey (Plum island, Lion's Game)..and even named my son, Corey, after the character....if you like Nelson Demille you will love this book....if you don't like Nelson DeMille, you should!
Rating: Summary: Another Demille delight Review: Once again Mr. Demille has provided me with hours of page turning enjoyment. As a sequel to "Generals Daughter" we get to accompany the smart... Paul Brenner on an adventeruous romp in an exotic locale. While a bit ponderous at times for those not interested in the chilling retrospective of a combat veteran's experience during the war, it offers an insight on the war's affect on those who fought it. All in all, an entertaining and engrossing thriller in the Demille fashion. How much longer do I have to wait for his next.
Rating: Summary: It Is More Than Just A Travelogue Review: This is a great book. Don't be dissuaded by those who say that it is a long-winded description of one Vet's return to Vietnam. In my opinion, there is so much more to it than that. On the surface, you have the murder mystery surrounding Tran Van Vinh, and Paul Brenner slowly discovering the secret associated with him and the unidentified US Soldiers. At a deeper level, you have Paul Brenner slowly discovering the profound impact that the war had on him (and other Vets), as well as on the people of Vietnam. As he solves the mystery, he resolves his conflicted feelings about the Vietnam War, and about the country Vietnam. He travels Up Country to solve the murder, and along the way he visits various battle sites that help him understand his role in the whole ugly affair. Anywho, I loved the book - DeMille's smart aleck style rings through loud and clear. Of course I would have preferred an ending with more resolution, but I'm willing to wait for DeMille to pull it together in his next novel (soon, I hope!).
Rating: Summary: Loved the Book, Hated the End Review: I've read most of Demille's books. I enjoyed this one very much. I was left wanting more at the end. As the main character ended his journey, Demille ended his story. It was almost as if, when he finished describing the war and the country he ran out of ideas. I thought it would have been more satisfying if he had completed the story of the characters' relationship. He left me wanting more....a sequel maybe???
