Rating: Summary: 200 pages past boring... Review: Make no mistake, the main character in this book isn't Paul Brenner, it's Vietman. There is so much "backdrop" in this book that it takes over. The ending is unsatisfying. The journey is unsatisfying. It's one thing to get bored with a book; it's quite another when you actually get frustrated. I have been a fan of DeMille's in the past, but if he wanted to write this book, perhaps a nonfiction tome would've been more appropriate.
Rating: Summary: Good read. Ending stinks. Review: You go through so much with the main characters and then he gives you that ending! 4 stars otherwise 5 with a better ending.
Rating: Summary: Demille "Up Country" - great read Review: I loved this novel. Demille never fails to tell a great story. His "Up Country" novel is another in a long line of great books.
Rating: Summary: Worth the Read Review: I enjoyed this book. A little change of scenery for DeMille which is nice, but the same fun characters. Well worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Up County Review: Another superb Demille book. He just keeps getting better and better.
Rating: Summary: A Home Run for Nelson Demille & Paul Bremmer!! Review: Paul bremmer is a 50 something former "grunt" from the war in Vietnam. Upon his return to Vietnam in the 90's he relives some of his combat experiences from the war, and he reflects on how serving there forever changed him as a person. All the while he is almost in disbelief at the changes in the country he left decades ago, Saigon is still full of motorscooters, but the riders now all clutch cell phones! His companion is a 20 something who tells him constantly "to your generation Vietnam is a War, to mine it is a Country". Mr. Demille recreates Paul Bremmer so skillfully, it is as if he speaks for an entire generation of men now coming to grips with their service in the War.
Rating: Summary: First time Demille Reader- Couldn't put it down! Review: I enjoy reading historical novels, especially those revolving around war. Authors I have read and enjoyed include W.E.B. Griifin and James Brady. This is the first time I have read Nelson Demille and it won't be the last. The book was exciting, thoughtful, suspensful , humorous...I could go on..One of those books you just can't put down.
Rating: Summary: Up Country Review: It's really 4.5 stars....nothing is perfect! Although Plum Island was close! For those who are not Nelson DeMille Fans (or have not read his novels), Up Country is typically (and that really means superb) Demille work. DeMille is true to his characters....if you have read "The General's Daughter". The suspense, the depth in characters, the detailed descriptions of the events that happened during the times of war....it all made the Viet Nam experience so close. For those of us who were not there, we felt grateful. For those of us who were there.....we gained some insight on what we were entangled in (perhaps not by choice). It was an enlightening experience to read DeMille's thoughts on a subject that was of great controversy no matter which side of the war you stood on. He gave life and feeling to something only a few really lived through and understand. Nelson DeMille is a master at his craft. Up Country is quality DeMille work...a book that provokes thought and many other emotions.
Rating: Summary: oh my Review: this is a horrible, interminable, tedious journey through a caricature of Vietnam. Plus it's totally offensive for its characterization of the "slant eyes" (I wish that were my term, and not his from the book). For summer reading, over this I recommend the back of a suntan lotion bottle. Please stop writing such bloated nonsense.
Rating: Summary: My favorite auther continues with another masterpiece.... Review: Awesome, loved it, couldn't put it down.....What a great read, historical, twists and turns as only Nelson Demille can do with his witty dialogue.....I am only afraid that the movie version will pale in comparison.....This book gives a great prespective on modern day Vietnam along with a love story, government cover-ups, etc.... READ this book.
