Summary: The Partner
Review: Thrilling! Edge of my seat, couldn't wait to see how Patrick had tricked them all. I was so disappointed that it ended. John Grisham definately needs to write a part II. The only other book I have read so quickly was the Firm.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Unconvincing.
Review: Three observations:
1. I guess I was supposed to root for the protaganist. But as far as I could tell, he was just a thief. The fact that he was smart, tenacious, etc., didn't change that.
2. Why did total strangers love him -- giving him special treatment at the hospital, constant favors, etc.? Grisham didn't give us any reason to understand why he elicited these responses from everyone he met.
3. Unlike some other readers, I loved the ending -- again, he was just a thief, and he may have charmed everyone else but didn't charm me, and the ending suited me fine.

Summary: Another Grisham Success!!
Review: This is a real good story with a very developed plot, and very interesting in my opinion, but a bit slower read and not as much suspense, in my opinion. I liked this book a lot but thought the ending could've been better.

Summary: Partner Review
Review: Imagine waking up to the same routine everyday. Jogging eight miles, having a beautiful girlfriend. Where you have millions invested in the banks. What if all of this was just an escape from a previous life. For Danilo Salvio or also known as Patrick Lanigan. He had a beautiful wife, a newborn, and worked for a well-respected law firm, back in his home in Biloxi Mississippi. Patrick found out a secret about the firm. That began his patient and brilliant plan to disappear with millions from his firm. Leaving behind his family and friends. A couple of years after Patrick disappeared his law firm put together what happened. Jack Stephano was hired to find Patrick and the stolen money. After many twists and turns , he found him a little house in Brazil. Nearly tortured Patrick to death and turned back over to the government. The Government had charged Patrick with many charges including manslaughter. Patrick had a plan. Hopefully it is good enough...

Summary: The Partner
Review: Simply fantastic is the best way to describe the 8th novel from John Grisham. The hero of this exhilarating thriller is Patrick Lannigan a lawyer who fled the country after faking his death. It all started when he learned that the firm he worked for was cutting him out of a major deal. Patrick lashes out by stealing the money, faking his death and relocating to Sao Paulo. Years later he is found and his existence is shattered. After a night of terror and torture, Patrick is extradited to the U.S.A where he turns to his old friend Sandy to represent him. Patrick could be facing jail time, but a dark secret from the firm could be his ticket to freedom. As with every other Grisham book the characters are meaty and not just some cardboard cut out. The book is never dull and has a great twist at the end that is worth waiting for. Grisham's finest hour.

Summary: Not his best, not his worst
Review: Usually, even if I don't like a Grisham book, I'll still have enough interest in it to finish it before setting it aside and moving on to a better book. With "The Partner" I was about 1/3 through it when I abandoned it for a few weeks. When I eventually went back to it I did finish it but it was more because I like to finish what I start than any compelling interest in the story.

I figured out how Patrick, once snatched and back in the USA facing trial, would weasel his way out of jail time about halfway through. I might have picked up on it sooner but I wasn't trying to anticipate the ending. I also guessed correctly about the surprise twist at the end - mainly because I was hoping that what happened would happen. I liked the ending although I thought Grisham could have added a few more pages to wrap up some loose ends. Without giving anything away, I would have enjoyed learning when a particular character decided to do something otherwise unexpected.

Maybe I'm sick of lawyer books or maybe it's just the ones that inhabit Grisham's imagination that I find so repulsive. Grisham's Patrick Lanigan comes up with a brilliant and intricate scheme to fake his own death and disappear with $90 million that was to be split between his firm and one of their clients. Once caught, he employs an equally clever scheme to get away with it. But there was a certain smugness to the character that I found incredibly unappealling and unsympathetic, except (of course) when he was being tortured.

If you like Grisham's books, you'll probably like "The Partner". It's not up there with his better work but it's also not his worst.

Summary: Blockbuster
Review: Grisham hits the mark again with "The partner." The mix of crooked lawyer, tons of missing money and a beautiful woman combine to lead readers on a merry chase of romance and suspense. Page after page readers are drawn into the plot, held captive through to the well written twisted finish. I am never disappointed when I sit down to a Grisham novel.

Summary: Utterly predictable
Review: Anybody who claims to not have forseen the final events of this novel must be in denial. On the plus side, the torture sequences were disturbingly well written. Made me uncomfortable, it was quite real. Overall, though, a pretty poor, predicatable, formulaic effort.
