Rating: Summary: "THE DISAPPOINTMENT" Review: Well, the dabate is over. It IS possible to take an average but passable story and ruin it in the final two pages. I can't understand why he came up with this ending, because it doesn't even make sense. If you are into wasting your time, here's your book.
Rating: Summary: Good book, lousy ending! Review: This is a typical Grisham opus, fast-moving, readable, with many a twist and turn. It held my interest all the way, but I have two fairly major gripes. First, as is common with Grisham (with the notable exception of "The Rainmaker"), the character development is not all it could be. You don't feel that you really know these folks, and you want to understand their motivations better. But the real drag is the ending, which is incomprehensible, doesn't fit, and leaves you with the firm conviction that you just wasted a day or two. What was he thinking?
Rating: Summary: The entire book kept me awake and the end had a huge twist. Review: The Partner was an interesting book on how to decieve your firm as well as your family and friends. I couldnt put the book down for a second. If you think you can predict the ending, guess again!
Rating: Summary: Grisham writes another movie Review: I have read the majority of Grisham's books and enjoyed his earlier books but he now seems like he cannot decide whether he is writing a movie or a book. Of the six or so books I have read I have been disappointed with one ending and hated two others (The Firm, Rainmaker, The Partner respectively). His writing is good enough but but predictable. Half-way through The Partner I knew he would succeed in beating the charges but how was Grisham going to avoid a happy ending. There is something prevalent in books and movies in the past few years where it seems we cannot have a happy ending. Someone does something completely against the character as it has been developed or they all of a sudden get hit by a logging truck or something. A twist in the ending doesn't mean you have to destroy 450+ pages of character development. I judge a book and it's author by the ending. A good ending, in my opinion, is harder to manufacture than a good beginning and Grisham's record for endings is pretty poor. With the plethora of quality writing out there, it will be a good long time before I pick up and read another Grisham movie. If you do feel the need to read , do yourself a favour and stop reading at the break on page 464 of the paperback. If you stop there it remains an intriguing read with a feel good ending. After that you get an author abandoning his craft for an attempt at a shocking twist ending.
Rating: Summary: Proof that "the majority" is easy to please. Review: This book had THE WORST ending that I have ever read. THE WORST. It was an ending so stupid and disappointing, I was actually left feeling angry with Grisham. If you paid attention to the details earlier in the book, the way that he connected you with the feelings of certain characters, it is clear that the author thinks the reader is a two year old who will believe anything. There are many positive reviews here, and as per Amazon policy, I won't debate them. I just wish that somebody had warned me not to read this garbage before I wasted my time. AWFUL BOOK! Shame on Grisham for being paid for such slop. I used to be a Grisham fan.
Rating: Summary: What kind of an ending was that?? Review: The Partner was absolutely thrilling. I was given a copy of this amazing book on my way to France, and not even the Eiffel Tower could make me put it down!! I am now hooked to all of the John Grisham books. My only negative comment is: what kind of ending was that? The whole book was so great, and then that ending was a big let down. I was so upset that I had to throw the book across the room! Even after that, The Partner remains my favorite of the John Grisham books.
Rating: Summary: Great Begining - Lousy Ending Review: This book started out as the best John Grisham novel I have ever read with great character development and story line. Grisham had to ruin the whole book by having an ending that was so unlike the character of Patrick that he had developed..
Rating: Summary: "Cookie Cutter" Characters But Good Story Line Review: We've seen these characters before in just about every other Grisham/Cornwell/Crighton type novel. However this book is set apart by the fact that we have no idea where this story is going to end up, and that is a good thing. I really enjoyed the novel, and enjoyed being surprised. The ending is rather ironic, and took some getting used to, but it works.
Rating: Summary: This was the first Grisham book I've read and I'm hooked!! Review: My ninth grade English teacher suggested that I read this book over the summer. When he told me it was about lawyers I thought "How boring!!" but then I read the inside front cover. I coudn't wait to get started and Grisham didn't let me down. I finished it in 2 days and am now working on reading his other novels! Awesome book!!
Rating: Summary: A page turner! Review: This has been one of the most compelling reads I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Mr. Grishams' characters are intriguing. He has the ability to draw you into the story. The main character, Patrick, made me want to trust him, although I knew he was up to something. It is not very often that you come across a book so irresistable that you fear if you put it down you may miss something!I found myself reaching for it everytime I put it down! Thank you Mr. Grisham for a most enjoyable read.
