Rating: Summary: The best book I've ever read! Review: You cannot put this book down. This is probably the only book I've ever read that would take precedence over my favorite tv show. When you're reading it, you're intrigued, when you're not reading it, you're anticipating what will happen next. You will love this book, it's the best book I've ever read!
Rating: Summary: Good Suprize ending Review: I enjoyed The Partner, the ending left you wondering if Eva was a great actress or did she disappear because someone was still after Patrick and she was leading them away from him. Even through he had paid the money back, those type of people don't like being made to look like fools. So did she really take off with the money? I don't think so...I think she was being followed and knew it.
Rating: Summary: Bad Ending - says it all... Review: For me, a good book/movie has to have a good ending, and by saying a good ending, I don't necessarily mean a lovely ending but I mean an interesting ending, a surprising one or something just purely nice. The ending of this book left me with a very empty feeling that I even have a hard time explaining why. I feel deceived and I feel as if I wasted my time. Therefore, I advise on reading other John Grishm books and not this one.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite Grisham books.... Review: The story itself was fascinating - of one smart man overcoming his partners in a law firm, his wife, the police - both before and after being caught. His girlfriend's character and motives for what she did still fascinate me!
Rating: Summary: Grisham's BEST by FAR Review: Having been a Grisham fan ever since a friend introduced me to 'A Time To Kill' years ago, I was eager to get into 'The Partner' but I must admit, after 'The Client' I had been wondering whether or not Grisham had been losing his 'can't miss' status. 'The Chamber' was tedius and let's face it, at times just plain boring. 'The Rainmaker' was better, but not by much. I was just about to give up on him when I received 'Partner' for Christmas a few years ago, and felt a total charge out of this newest thriller. Not a SINGLE Grisham book takes off as quickly as this one does. This one takes flight virtually from page 1 and stays aloft for the entire story. Someone told me before I finished it that they enjoyed the book, but felt let down by the ending. So I sort of prepared myself for a great story that had a lame ending...boy was I SURPRISED! I LOVED the ending! Justice is dished out in many different ways, and for me, I felt it was totally appropriate. Why on earth did Patrick Lanigan fake his own death and snatch away millions of dollar's of his Firm's money? You don't really find out the answer to that until almost the end, and if I were to have any one complaint about this book, it was that Grisham got me SO INTERESTED in the WHY all that happened that I wanted to know the answer, I NEEDED to have the answer. The fact that he could get me to wanting to know the answer just kept me going that much more than his previous novels had. MUCH more compelling than ANYTHING else he has done before, and a LOT different, too. So much so that I wondered on more than one occasion if 'Partner' was even written BY Grisham...not that I do not have faith in him to write such a great story, but it really is a change from anything else (in MY opinion) he had produced up to this point. As far as legal thrillers go, I believe that there are a LOT of other authors who do the genre much better than Grisham does (namely Richard North Patterson, Steve Martini & Phillip Margolin) but 'The Partner' stands with the best of any of these other guys. Simply put, the Best novel Grisham has written by FAR.
Rating: Summary: Best Grisham book to date Review: It's to the point that if there is a new Grisham book out, I just buy it without knowing what's it about. When I first started reading this book, I was totally grossed out by the graphic tortue of the lead character, Patrick. Although I wanted to either skip that graphic part or just forget about reading this one, I stuck with it and found it to be the most interesting book of Grisham's to date. The legal twists and turns are what made me enjoy it the most. There is the usual side story of someone trying to get the lead character but it's the lead character and his girlfriend that make this book.....and it's ending something to talk about around the water cooler! I don't want to give too much of it away....just trust me and buy it!
Rating: Summary: He's on automatic Review: This was a disappointing book with far too many elements in commonwith his previous lightweight entertainments: 1. Young new partnerin a law firm in the south 2. Corruption within the firm involvingbig money 3. Young lawyer just incredibly clever, thinks of (almost)everything in advance 4. Young lawyer makes off with a ton ofmoney... 5. Escape to Latin America 6. Sailboat 7. Transfer offunds via wire to various off-shore banks The last feature inparticular is interesting. Grisham has used the wire-transfer idea sooften that it is beginning to look like some sort of obsession. Thesame is somewhat true of escapes to the Caribbean or Latin Americawith gobs of money. Anyway, this is a simplistic pot-boiler withnot much suspense or risk to the hero (other than being almosttortured to death early in the book). The ending is strange, unexplained, and unsatisfying. END
Rating: Summary: A brilliant novel with a subtle flaw Review: Four and a half years before and a lifetime ago, Patrick Lanigan faked his own death, embezzled US$90M from the law firm where he was a partner, and disappeared from sight, leaving behind his wife and baby daughter. When he was caught and brought back, many charges were brought against him, by the Federal government, by the State government, by his own wife, by his former firm, by the insurance companies, especially by those who lost the money. They range from murder to abandonment, to fraud, everyone wants a piece of Patrick Lanigan and it seems that there's not enough of him to satisfy all. But Patrick had yet to play all his cards. He has a beautiful and smart partner out there coordinating with him, using the US$90M as a powerful tool. Despite his infamy, he still has friends in the legal circles, sympathetic and willing to help. However, his most powerful weapon it seems is the truth itself, which he deployed to unravel everything that stood against him. It was interesting how much court room scene actually turned out in the face of all the legal actions flying around. Despite the atrocities charged to Patrick, the author made it clear that he is a figure to root for, hence readers could expect from the beginning that Patrick was not a monster. Thus it was not surprise that revelations and twists came to save him, only the nature of those twists. Despite the seemingly brilliant plan Patrick had to save himself, thoughtful readers would notice several large holes in Patrick's plan - namely, the one thing he had failed to plan for in the event of his capture turned out to be one of his most important salvation.
Rating: Summary: A bit predictable, but still a great Grisham Review: John Grisham's reputation for a great thriller has not been damaged. This is a great, fast-paced read with a little deception and romance tossed in to give it a well-rounded appeal. I felt the ending was a bit predictable, the foreshadowing was too obvious to leave much question as to how it would end, but still a great story. Patrick is on the run after four years and millions of dollars and is captured and tortured to reveal the location of the money. Once the FBI takes over, Patrick reveals his plan to work his way out of almost everything that comes his way and gets a surprised in the end.
Rating: Summary: Spell Binding! Thank you for another thriller Mr. Grisham. Review: John Grisham takes us into rapid world's that literally turn the pages with their intensity. The characters weave together to form a rich tapestry of drama, that offers us insight into the human condition, what is really important in life, and also the inanity that life can often assume. Grisham is a national treasure. Bill Douglas...
