Rating: Summary: GRISHAM PROVES YET AGAIN THAT HE IS ONE OF THE BEST! Review: I just finished reading this book the other day and WOW WAS I IMPRESSED!! I have taken to Grisham books over the past few months, this being the third I've read. It's the story of Patrick Lanigan who has stolen 90 million dollars from a client and his law partners and ran to South America. Private Investigators are hired by the client that lost his money, and Lanigan is tracked down and tourtured. He is brought back to the United States and kept under security at a hospital off the coast. There are many twists and turns and an ending that I didn't expect. READ THIS BOOK NOW!
Rating: Summary: Grisham's absolute best! Review: If you've yet to read a Grisham novel, start here! I've read most of them and this one stands out as, far and away, the most gripping. The story drew me in and held my attention to the last page. What a story! Amazing, just amazing.
Rating: Summary: This book is great! Review: I'm a big fan of Grisham, and this book is definately in my list of his best work. If you read 'The Testament' and liked it, this book is a must. I couldn't stop reading it. It is the type of story that you just can't imagine how the character will get out of a bad situation and then the author surprises you with the answers. If you like Grisham's style, you'll definately like this book.
Rating: Summary: Amazing narration Review: I didn't read the other reviews before giving my own impression, but I give this audio novel 5 stars because of the narrator, who is absolutely nothing short of an amazing story-reader. He does uncanny impersonations of the characters' voices, and has a pleasant, balanced voice that never tires out or overwhelms you.The story itself, although not as compelling as The Firm for instance, is still decent enough, considering the first-rate narration. I listened to this audio book on a long two-day car drive and certainly felt what the critics call "riveted." I won't give away the ending, but it's a great one!
Rating: Summary: Typical John Grishman, starts strong, ends weak Review: I don't know why I started reading another John Grishman novel. After the last one I read I vowed not to read another. The book starts of well. The end however is NOT credible. How could a man who planned every detail, anticipate how people would react and circumstances likely to occur, be (1) caught unaware and (2) not have a backup plan. Eva's defection in the end, just dropped out of nowhere. I saw no hints of this.
Rating: Summary: A book beyond the story Review: The moment you start reading this book feels like you are in the most important part of it, and you continue to read, and all the time you are at the climax of the book, it keeps getting more interesting every time. Job well done Mr. Grisham !
Rating: Summary: The best book I've ever read Review: I've just read this book for the second time. I read it when it first came out and told everyone I knew to read it. I was bored and had nothing to read, so I read it again. I read about 4 books a week, different authors, different story lines, this is by far the best book I've ever read. If you've been in a cave and never read Grisham before, read this one. I can almost guarantee you'll love it. It's not only very fast paced, but it has an ending that will leave you thinking for weeks.
Rating: Summary: A thriller??!? No way! Review: (...)I did not like this book. I read and enjoyed "The Firm", but this one is nowhere near as good.(...) This is quite simply bad writing. The book starts well, with a man on the run finally being caught, but even as his captors start torturing him to find where he hid the $90 million, his friends are moving to help him. There is tension, there is excitement, there is a beautiful woman. Who will get to Patrick first? But after that it's all downhill. 1) Grisham cannot sustain suspense. Far too many pages are taken up explainig how things were done when the reader already knows the outcome. No tension at all! 2) Grisham does not seem to understand the narrative function of dialogue versus narrative. He merely uses dialogue when 2 or more characters are talking to each other! His dialogue is sometimes almost good - we get some wit and cut and thrust, which is almost totally absent in the narrative - but mostly it's very humdrum. 3) The ending is poor because it is almost completely unprepared. A good ending can shock, but the reader should be able to look back in the narrative and find clues that prepare for it. I only found 2 and they are very weak. 4) Grisham is too thorough, like his protagonist who has everything planned. The only tension left is to find out what really happened and how he did it. And this is explained in painstaking and boring detail. For example, Grisham spends several pages first telling the real story of who (or what) was burned in his car "accident", THEN drags us through the whole business of contacting the relatives and digging up the coffin and opening it to find... exactly what we knew was in there all along! No guessing necessary. Patrick refuses to reveal the name of the dead person, but this is description of a legal tactic; it provides no narrative tension because the reader already knows! "They left Biloxi in Sandy's Lexus". Who gives a *** about the brand of car? It plays absolutely no role whatever in the story. All it does is say, "See? Characters in my book are rich and successful! When they make the movie, this should be a clue to the director!" Poor editing. In one scene in which a female (sexist stereotyping) takes notes of a meeting, Grisham explains to the reader that the note-takers in the previous meeting were now unavailable because they had gone back to headquarters. Who cares? This is just anal attention to pointless detail, realistic maybe, but narratively meaningless! 5) The characters are not developed at all, they are all just 2-dimensional, even the protagonist. The main female lead, Eva, has been desribed as "the love interest", but there is almost no tenderness or real expression of love in the whole novel at all! Patrick is clearly a control-freak who is so into faultless planning (which becomes the focus of the book) that he has no time left for any finer feelings, or even any feelings at all, except a few trite "I love yous". Grisham grossly neglected the fun part of the whole deal. Compare "The Girl, the Gold Watch, and everything". Booring! A very thorough and clever story by a writer very familiar with the legal world. But a THRILLER?!?? NO WAY! Grisham should take lessons from Agatha Christie.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book, without the end Review: I thought that The Partner was an entertaining novel. It is about the scheme of Patrick Lanigan. He fakes his own death to steal 90 million dollars from his old firm. Patrick then moves to Brazil and changes his name. Patrick meets a woman and falls in love. Patrick's life is going great, or so he thought. Four years later, Patrick's past catches up with him and he is brutally tortured. He is then delivered back to the United States were he soon becomes a famous man. He finds himself a lawyer and attempts to drop all the charges on him. Patrick's freedom relies on the truth, what really happened. If you enjoy a good story, then you will enjoy this book. It isn't really action-packed, but it has a good plot. I wasn't particularly fond of the ending.
