Rating: Summary: Horribly Written Review: After reading THE DaVINCI CODE and being given this book for Christmas, I thought that it would be as good as Brown's work. Unfortunately, it is not. The dialogue and actions between characters is stiff and unrealistic, as is the plot. The writing was so flowery and lead-footed that I had a hard time enjoying the story that was so easy to locate within the THE DaVINCI CODE. Although I tend to shy away from "phenomenon famous" books, I recommend this: stick with Dan Brown's work instead. There is a reason that his book is famous and this one is not.
Rating: Summary: Great book, quick read, stuffed with facts, well-written Review: To begin with, I read Da Vinci Code last year. When I picked up Daughter of God, I had a deja vue thing. What really turned me on with Daughter of God was the very real, totally three dimensional characters who struggled with their own internal demons. It was especially rewarding to see Seth and Zoe changing inside. My wife read this as well and pointed out that this was a very romantic thriller, as much about relationship as the other plot elements which is probably why, she saysm Romance Times gave it such a very high rating, and why they reviewed it at all. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: How Many People Can Be Killed in One Book? Review: Where to begin? Maybe I was a little spoiled having read "DaVinci Codes" and "Angels and Demons" before reading "Daughter of God". But even if I hadn't read Dan Brown's books, my sentiments would probably be the same. Yes, Perdue does go into some historical details about Goddess worshipping, how Christianity and Judaism squashed the divine feminine and Hitler's theft of priceless artwork during WWII, but the book seemed to be more about how many people can be killed in one story than anything else. After awhile, it got downright annoying. It seemed like every other chapter Seth and/or Zoe were involved in a shootout with one group of another. In fact, I found myself skipping over parts of the book for that reason. It had the feel of "been there, done that". For most of the book, it seems like the whole story of Sophia got lost rather than being the main focus of the storyline. I kept saying to myself "ok, so Seth has someone chasing him, AGAIN, and has someone shooting at him AGAIN, but what about Sophia? What happend to her story? The ending of the story was very anti-climatic, but in all fairness, so was the ending of the "DaVinci Codes". This was an ok book, but not as good as I had hoped.
Rating: Summary: Believe this is an Entertaining Read:) Review: SPOILER ALERT. Daughter of God opens with Zoe Ridgeway negotiating art purchases (as she is an art broker this is entirely appropriate.)Minutes after "closing the deal" to purchase valuable and mysterious art collection she gets kidnapped from her hotel room. Her husband a professor and ex-cop in his anguish over Zoe's disappearance determines to discover her fate, no matter the consequences, and as such gets tangled in a web of conspiracy. There are some who claim there is a second Messiah of the female persuasion, and an elite group in the church who would do anything to prevent the revelation of a "Daughter of God" from becoming public knowledge and shattering the Cathechism of the Catholic Church. Perdue writes his novel at a quick pace, constantly throwing plot twists at his protaganists, and keeping readers in suspense how the novel will turn out. The only thing preventing this review from being 5 stars is that for a novel so thematically based on faith and belief or at least a search for same, some of the plot elements are a little implausible. Makes for an exciting and intelectually stimulating read.
Rating: Summary: Top pick, super read Review: I'm trying to figure out whether I read the same Daughter of God as some of the other reviewers here. I too, read Da Vinci Code and enjoyed it tremendously. However, Daughter of God is simply filled with facts and background about history, religion, the development of how the Goddess was replaced by a male deity and a lot more. In fact, Perdue takes things a lot farther in explaining _why_ the divine sex change took place to reflect the development of ancient cultures. I was amazed, in fact, to find that the department of the Vatican that was responsible for the Inquisition still exists, just under a new name. Daughter of God gave me a cast of fully developed, believable characters whose motivations rang true. As for the body count that some reviewers used some unusually vituperative language to slam: this is, after all, a thriller and that is part of that genre. I found the Body count in Daughter of God less than the average Ludlum or Crichton novel. Further, rather than being gratuitous as is so often the case, I found Perdue's worked to help build the tension, to raise the stakes for the good guys and let me know just what sort of terrible consequences were in store should the good guys make a mistake. All in all a top pick for me
Rating: Summary: Hitler and Religion Review: Having read the Da Vinci code over the summer, I decided that I wanted to read another "fictional" religion-based book. I recieved Daughter of God for Christmas (a little ironic don't you think?). I read the book in 4 days as I found it an easy read. However, I didn't find the book very entertaining--yes, the book contains a plot about a female messiah, and it does bring in Hitler and his blackmailing of the Catholic Church with information of the female messiah, but that information only makes up a small portion of the book. The book is mostly about how many people are killed in getting the proof of the female messiah--it also goes into great detail describing said murders. While the Da Vinci Code made me question what religion passes off as truth, and what people did to get the truth out, the Daughter of God did no such thing.
Rating: Summary: A Warp-Speed Thriller Review: I totally enjoyed this book. I was taken also by the depth of information that Perdue wove through the story about religion, history and why and how God made the transition from female to male. There was a lot here that I have followed up on and found factually solid. He manages to give us all this information without it slowing things down. I felt like I had a real meal here and not fast food. I found Seth Ridgeway a rougher, tougher, leaner, meaner and far more capable and likeable Professor of religion. After digging into the Gnostic Gospels (which I bought after reading and enjoying The Da Vinci Code) I found an interesting parallel: According to the Gnostic Gospels, Sophia was the Goddess, co-equal in creation. Sophia's daughter was named Zoe!Thus Daughter of God's heroine Zoe Ridgeway, is symbolically the daughter of the Goddess ... the daughter of the sacred feminine the book was about. In Da Vinci Code, the heroine, is also Sophia (Sophie Neveu) and in that book, the heroine is the descendent of Mary Magdalene who, for Gnostic Christians, is the symbol for the Sophia of Gnostic Gospels. Thus, at their core BOTH books are about Sophia and BOTH heroines are symbolic of Sophia.
Rating: Summary: Marvelous writing and facts Review: This is one of the most remarkable books I have ever read. The writing is wonderful as are the historical facts and research. I have done a lot of checking of Mr. Perdue's research on my own and I find his historical and religious material very solid. I especially liked Mr. Perdue's writing. Unlike many thrillers, he does not use a lit of trite and hackneyed phrases and manages to avoid the overuse of the passive voice. The result is a style that is "readable literary" and a cut above what I usually find in thrillers. In the midst of a lot of typical thriller action scense, he manages to work in a large body of solid facts that enlighten without getting the way. I'd also like to weigh in on the sporadic batch of reviews here that make a career out of trashing this book. They all seem to come from fans of another writer. All of these reviews seem to be written by people who have not read Daughter of God. This sort of behavior undermines the integrity of the Amazon review system and, in my opinion, only damage the reputation of that other writer.
Rating: Summary: Daughter of God Review: I'd rather give this 0 stars, but that is not an option. The supposed controversy between this book and the Da Vinci Code is a complete fabrication in the mind of Mr. Perdue. The stories have only the slightest thread in common, namely mention of a secret society within the Catholic church and a goddess figure. The writing of Dan Brown is so much better and more interesting than Mr. Perdue that it makes one wonder if Mr. Perdue didn't dream up this whole plagiarism issue to sell more books. If you are going to invest valuable time in reading a book, go for the Da Vinci Code. It has much more historical information without the gratuitous gore of a quick battle scene or the very corny "sentimental" vignettes that are a complete waste of paper and time. In a word: YUCK!
Rating: Summary: Most intriguing and readable novel Review: I read this book in just two days! Couldn't put it down. the characters are intersting and the intrigue of the church and political factions and then adding Nazis, well this book poses some interesting thoughts and suggestions concerning the Christian faith. What if there was a female messiah? that would rock the religious world!no matter what your religious atitudes or lack of, the book will hold your attention just by the chase! pick this up today!
