Rating: Summary: Tedious Review: This is a tedious, long drawn out book about a very old theme. Many times I thought to put the book away, not to finish it, but thought it might get deeper into the character of Catherine Blake. She could be great (though utterly ruthless) but her character could have been taken much further in this book. Instead, it concentrates too much on the rather stuffy Vicray who becomes progressively more tedious. All in all I don't consider this a very good book and it should in no way be compared to "Fatherland" as suggested on the jacket, since that story is truly fascinating. The Unlikey Spy is a repetition of a theme so old and repetitious that it really wasn't worth the time.
Rating: Summary: ONE CRUCIAL MISTAKE Review: The book is quite good in its kind, especially its pseudo-historical parts. The fictional charachters are mostly stereotypical, yet the plot is thrilling and full of tension. However there is one crucial mistake in the plot, which destroys its credibility altogether. For the sake of future readers, I will not reveal what it is. I would be very happy to discuss it with the author, though.
Rating: Summary: The Unlikely Spy Review: The best World War Two spy thriller I have read in years. The Unlikely Spy puts the rest into the shade.
Rating: Summary: Strangely similar to Follett's Eye of the Needle Review: Well written, but the plot line is an almost exact mimic of Ken Follett's Eye of the Needle, although the latter has a male German spy. Silva does spin a good tale and the action moves the reader quickly through the book.
Rating: Summary: A Female Spy..how refreshing Review: A female spy isn't that unlikely. The female spies of the time are not known as much as the male ones and so they are sometimes forgotten. It was fun to read about how she used her body and her mind to get her job done. The best part about Silva's books is that he makes references back to them in the others..its a nice treat for the reader..or at least it was for me. Do read this book, it is worth it. Silva is great and he ranks up there with Jack Higgins and David Morrell for me.
Rating: Summary: The Unlikely Spy Review: I thought that this was a great spy/WWII thriller. The beginning was a tad slow, but kept me interested. From the middle to the end I could not put the book down. Being a real spy/thriller authority, I rate this book at least a 4.5 and well worth the read. This is a fresh new author.
Rating: Summary: A good one Review: To start off I'd only rate the book 4.5 stars, because there were minor flaws, but besides those it was great. There could've been better character developement. Because im stupid I didn't understand the ending. I thought it was a good book, and I'll watch the movie opening day to find out no movie could be as good as the book, but that always happens. I'll read them all.
Rating: Summary: Ends better than it begins Review: Just finished the book, and then re-read some of the reviews here, and I agree with most of them. Overall, I found it to be really exciting and great historical fiction. I wasn't very 'into it' at first, but was completely rewarded with my patience during the last 250 pages or so. Also, it has one of the best chase scenes that I've ever read. Though, I have to agree with the review that indicated that Silva spends a little too much time developing characters without fully using what he's come up with. That being said, I would recommend it - it was fun read...
Rating: Summary: Switchblade sharp Review: Silva has endeared himself to the crowd that seek more than just 007 spy action. He has created human characters that struggle with the reality of their actions. He lifts the veil on the German machine showing the grays that are usually depicted as pure black in other creations. The Unlikely Spy is a book that I had an unusual amount of fun reading. And the ending was very enjoyable. Too many times you reach the end of a book like this and it just doesn't live up to the action and intrigue of the body. Unlikely delivers from front to back. If you have any interest in espionage or WWII fiction, you can't miss this.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly fascinating plot and characters held suspense. Review: Daniel Silva creates a world of international espionage within the setting of a world at war. The characters encompass our knowledge of the time period and move realistically through the plot. The juxtaposition of time from past to present in the book is fascinating. One never knows when the character developed earlier in the plot will reappear. Vicary becomes a victim of a greater plot to win the war and is powerless to exercise his will without being manipulated. I couldn't put this book down until I had finished and thought about ramifications of the plot afterwards for several days. Silva has written an excellent novel. The Mark of the Assassin is well done, but I found his first novel to be more intriguing!
