Summary: Yet another Clancy wannabe
Review: I don't know about other readers, but the things that have always drawn me to authors like Clancy (and the best of his genre, such as Dale Brown and Patrick Robinson) have been twisting plot, complex characters, and attention to detail. Unfortunately, this book has none of the above. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable read on a rainy afternoon when you have nothing else to do, but it certainly isn't on par with the "masters".

First of all, like so many action/suspense authors these days, the plot is weak and predictable. In fact, it almost reads as a Hollywood action movie, and goes through all of the action cliches.

Second, he spends almost no time on the development of characters who matter. Even Rapp, the hero, stays fairly one-dimensional as the vengeful assassin (love interest aside). One of the great strengths of Clancy et al has always been characters (especially leads) so psychologically developed that you feel they could walk through the door at any moment.

Third, and this is where we get a little pedantic, his attention to detail was somewhat lacking. Clancy has always been known for being incredibl exacting in his work, but also for getting information that no one else seems to. I know that some creative licence must be taken in order to facilitate plot devices, but some of the stuff Flynn comes up with (notably during the initial attack on the White House) is simply unbelievable.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks in September, it seems that Americans have rediscovered their interest in this genre. Unfortunately, they also seem to be reluctant to recognise writing that is quite simply second-class. If you want a lazy afternoon page turner, then by all means pick up this book, but PLEASE don't substitute it for something that involves real thought and suspense.

Summary: A new ace on the block
Review: Clancy may have created the new genre but a few new faces have arrived and this new writer is great! Flynn is a great author. I did enjoy this book so much that I want to read it again.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Mitch Rapp is a winner
Review: My first Flynn read and have ordered more! His description of various American ops teams seems to be out of today's current events. If you like early Clancy you will like Flynn.

Summary: A not so unrealistic time killer
Review: Transfer of Power is unfortunately not as far fetched as it might have seemed prior to 9-11. The story of a terrorist attack on the white house is unforunately not as unrealistic these days as one would have hoped. In the current context, it is even more interesting to read this book.

It is not a serious novel, it is not a deep novel. But if you are looking for a good non-stop thriller to read on the plane or train this is a good pick. It is a Clancy type book, minus about 500 pages.

Again, if you want a good quick read, and a topical read unfortunately, check out Term Limits. It passes the time.

Summary: Masterful. Thrilling. A sure winner!
Review: I picked this book up for lack of reading material in the airport. WHAT A GREAT BOOK!

I truly enjoyed this book. I went out and bought his other books and loved them just as much. Very Good!

There are enough twists and turns in the plot that I kept reading and finished this book in about two days. I also found that there was just a touch of humor and irony in this book to keep it from being too 'dark'.

Summary: Masterful!
Review: This book is not for everyone. If you are one of those who is singing "Give Peace a Chance" these days after September 11th or if you voted for Bill Clinton and Al Gore, this book will make you uncomfortable, at best and depressed, at worst.

This book is about how "the adults" deal with terrorisim, albeit on a much smaller scale than we are currently seeing. The White House has been successfully attacked and occupied by terrorists, led by Rafique Assiz. The president has managed to escape to a bunker in the White House which is believed to be impregnable, but he is out of contact with the outside world. That leaves the handling of the retaking of the White House and the rescuing of the hostages taken to the Vice President. His method of dealing with terorists to to capitulate to the first two demands (unfreeze Iraq's assets and have the UN drop all sanctions against Iraq) in order to save hostages and shore up his hopes to assume the presidency should the terrorists get their hands on the president. This possibility becomes more probable when it is discovered that the terrorists are close to drilling through the entry door to the president's bunker and brings into play the naked thirst for power that exists in those who live in Washington, DC. While the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Director of the CIA and many others, plan ways to liberate the White House and eliminate the hostages, the Vice President and his corrupt Chief of Staff, plot and spin ways to survive politically without too much regard as to how they do it.

The "good guys" have managed to insert Mitch Rapp, a counter terrorisim specialist into the White House along with a man who knows all the hidden passageways. As Assiz's plan works it's way to fruition, events converge to give the reader a page turning experience. Based upon the quality of this book, I have bought the two sequels, The Third Option and Separation of Power and look forward to reading more about Mr. Flynn's vision of the world we now find ourselves in.

Summary: Good but...
Review: Excellent in every aspect, except that people moving within walls of the White HOuse up and down and not being noticed is frankly beyond belief.
Terrorists are undoubtedly wrong minded but also undoubtedly incredibly clever

Review: This is the first book I have read of his. I love the way Vince writes. He sucks you in and it feels like you are watching a movie as you read his book. It is a real page turner. He has a way of leaving you hanging after each chapter that you can't stop you are compelled to keep reading and want to know what is going to happen next!!! If you like the TV series West Wing then this is the one to read!!!. It is an exciting story and a fast read. I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read the next one!!!
He is definitely in competition with writers such as Balducci
and Cannell.
