Summary: Scratch That Itch
Review: Having visited Flynn's website, I was impressed by his path to publication. This guy paid his dues, starting off with self-publication after numerous large publishers rejected his manuscript. He pounded the pavement. He now regularly hits the bestseller lists.

"Transfer of Power" is my first foray into the world of Mitch Rapp, Flynn's perennial hero. Mitch is a no-nonsense military man with a soft heart for the ladies. Here, he goes head to head with his nemesis, a notorious terrorist. The terrorist and his team have managed to infiltrate the White House and take hostages. Fortunately, the president has escaped to an underground bunker. Rapp's job is to penetrate the White House and take out the terrorists.

Yes, the story is that simple. Nevertheless, Flynn manages to keep our interest all along. The story harbors few surprises, but Flynn's narrative reads smoothly, taking only slight diversions to give us research info or character development. Flynn splices his scenes smoothly, balancing the bits of action so that it never becomes confusing.

If you want a condensed Clancy thriller (with not as much detailed research) or a lite Daniel Silva novel (with not as much character development), Vince Flynn can scratch that itch. He provides quick-hitting and entertaining tales. The itch may go away for a short time only, but then, of course, you can always scratch with another Mitch Rapp adventure.

Summary: Not even close to Clancy or Ludlum
Review: A fast paced suspenseful and predictable novel ...This is not a tightly written book, all the pieces of the puzzle never quite fit together. It's not based on solid research, or much factual information, much less common sense and logic. If you're looking for a Ludlum or Clancy type novel, this is not it. Both plot and writing are elementary, to say the least. But if you want a quick, fast paced, entertaining read, and don't mind saying "oh puh-leeaze", every few pages (because the story isn't grounded in credibility), this book is for you. The best way to read this book is to assume the terrorist are stupid, the Secret Service is incompetent, and everyone else is clueless (including the reader), except for the protagonist.

My first clue should have been Flynn's disclaimer in the beginning stating "that out of respect to US Secret Service...and safety of president, plans to White House were changed and secret Service tactics changed/ommited". First of all if a terrorist wanted to get into the White House, they wouldn't use a novel for research. Secondly, if Flynn actually got the actual layout of the White House, so can anyone else. As for SS tactics, I doubt the SS would share them with Flynn. But the reality is that there simply aren't any tactics described in the book.

My next clue should have been when the Secret Service were too incompetent to protect the white house (maybe that's one of the altered tactics)and that this country's leaders were so stupid as to build the president's bunker under the White House, making it only one room, with no amenities. What better place for the head of this country to be, if the White House or country is under attack, than locked underneath the White House.

Then the terriost, instead of torturing the Secret Service, or using truth serum to get the code that opens the bunker door (which according to Flynn, every Secret Service person apparently has) decides to drill through to the bunker door. Yeah right.

There are so many inconsistencies and holes throughout this book, that I doubt an editor even touched it much less read it. For example, according to Flynn the WH was renovated because it was structurally unsound, but when the renovations stared, the two new levels under the White House, the third for that pitiful one room bunker, were excavated before shoring up the unsafe structure....I don't know much about construction, but common sense tells me the structure is strengthened before digging a new basement, or everything will cave in.

Or how about to get into the WH through a ventilation system, they go through an opening on the White House lawn, covered by fake bushes. These bushes aren't bolted down, or secured in any way because they just move them aside. Once Rapp and Adams are crawling through the WH ventilation system Rapp turns off his light from his overhead helmet, worried the bad guys might see it. But he's not worried about them hearing Adams constant sneezing.

Or when Flynn writes that the terrorist have strategically placed explosives. It's decided to send in two Navy Seal demolition experts, because the building had to be disarmed before any rescue attempt can be made. Well the terrorist catch on and kill one of the Seals while still in the duct. But, guess what? They never check to see if he's dead or worry about if there are more.

These seals were supposed to disarm bombs so a rescue can be initiated, but Flynn never mentions them again. Guess they just gave up and went home. But it really didn't matter because, it turns out that the explosives didn't need to be disarmed after all because the assault team entered the WH without any explosives going off.

Or when out of the blue, Flynn writes that the FBI is helping to get subpoenas. the white house is under siege, who the hell are they going to subpoena, and why? But true to form subpoena is never mentioned again.

Throughout this book the focus is on saving the president. But in the end the author takes us through the rescue of the hostages instead of the president. All of a sudden the president is free. Flynn failed to build any relationship with the reader and the hostages so they are just a bunch of faceless people with who the reader has no affinity.

There are many many holes in this book, but i'll leave those discoveries to other readers.

Last but not least, my pet peeve is Flynn's obsession with use of "digital phone" instead of cell phone, as they're commonly called. Residential phones have been digital for years, as have cell phones, so Flynn's insistence on referring to them as digital phones, like he's talking about some new state-of-the-art technology, just plain irks me.

And finally, the "loop" is not a method of transportation. it's another name for downtown...as in I'm going to the 'loop'. - I grew up in Chicago, and stll have family there.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: I picked this book up because the title sounded interesting. I have never read a book by Flynn before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I read this book in two days. I simply couldn't put it down. Rapp was a very entertaining character to read about. And with the current situation with Iraq and religious extremists the book seemed even more real. The book was very suspenseful and left you wanting more when it was over. I look forward to reading other Flynn novels.

Summary: Great place to start your Vince flynn reading
Review: Vince Flynn has become my favorite author. he has alot of detail and plot twists. The characters are very defined in this book. Flynn makes you think twice about the way washington is run in the real life and how it should be run. He takes you inside the mind of all the main characters (good, bad, and somewhere in between) and makes you second guess the actions of some of the characters. If your a Flynn fan pick it up, if your a political thriller fan pick it up, and if you just want something different than the normal police thriller pick it up. A great read.

Summary: Mitch Rapp Rocks!!
Review: This book is (apparently) the first of the Mitch Rapp series by Flynn, but his second novel.

His first novel is Term Limits, a totally action-packed CIA thriller with assasins, and the whole shebang.

The second book is full of suspense, but really gets to you! You are introduced to Mitch Rapp is the CIA's best covert operative, and this book follows him while he foils a terrorist takeover that leaves the president and many white house staffers hostage.

This book, along with all Flynn novels, is highly recommended! Great action. I only hope they make it into a movie some day like the Clancy films based on Jack Ryan.

Summary: Amazingly foresighted in 1999 before Sept. 11, 2001
Review: I agree that this is the new Tom Clancy and Clive Cuslar! I just couldn't put the book down. I resented having the prepare meals and clean house because it took me away from the riveting adventure of the story.

I am now purchasing three of his other books. I hope they are just as good as I found this one to be!

Summary: Stickler to technical details
Review: The author weaves a compelling yarn about terrorist attack on the White House; Transfer of Power was published in 1999 and is almost prophetic toward events now occupying our daily world news. The backdrop are developments in the Persian Golf. Vince Flynn is a stickler to technical details, which are often lengthy page fillers. The plot however is dramatized by the fact that panic rooms or bunkers seem to have one thing in common: chronic communication failure. The hero in this nightmare is Mitch Rapp, a fearless dragon slayer, whom I met in Separation of Power by Vince Flynn. I will read this author again in The Third Option. Gerborg

Summary: Tom Clancy should read this book!
Review: This book is what the term "page-turner" was created for. Tom Clancy books are great, but there are always some parts where you have to force yourself to plow through. This book was simply addictive. I did not want to put it down.
After reading a Tom Clancy novel, I always want to read something by someone else before going on to the next in the series. With the Vince Flynn novels, I read the first three back to back to back and Transfer of Power was the best of the three!!!
