Rating: Summary: Alive.........tangible Review: This is a masterpiece, a magnificent piece of history, architecture and supposed fiction. It was so real to me that I refuse to believe that it wasn't a true story. The characters gushed dimension; they enabled me to reach out and live among them in medieval England. In a bad to mediocre book, the span of time narrated in Pillars- would have made a monumental drag. In Pillars-, it could be called nothing less than an epic
Rating: Summary: The most fascinating historical fiction book you'll find! Review: This is a GREAT book! I first read it about four years ago. (on loan from the library) recently, I bought the paperback and read it again. It is a novel filled with fascinating characters who you feel as though you've known. Also, it is a wonderful way to learn about the hardships of life during this time in England. It is a fascinating wau to learn about the construction of cathedrals. I can't recommed this book enough! Amazon has the paperback at a very reasonable price. You really should buy it! I regret that you can no longer find the hardcover (I have been trying forever! I am currently seeking a used copy [if you have one do you wanna sell it?]) so buy the paperback while you still can. You won't regret it
Rating: Summary: Enthralling Review: When there are characters in the book that you wish were
your best friend as well as ones who make you hate them for all you are worth, then you know you have an excellent novel in your hands. The Pillars of the Earth will make you
wish that you lived in the romantic, corrupt, tragic, and
heroic world that it describes
Rating: Summary: FOLLETT'S BEST BY A LONG SHOT. Review: IF YOU ARE A FAN OF KEN FOLLETT OR HISTORICAL FICTION, THIS IS A MUST. I AM A FAN OF BOTH AND THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THE BEST NOVELS I'VE EVER READ. FAST PACED, EXCITING,EDUCATING AND EMOTIONAL ALL IN ONE. FROM SEX TO VIOLENCE, THE PLOT TWISTS AND WILL KEEP YOU UP LATE AT NIGHT OR IN MY CASE, WISHING THE TRAIN RIDE WAS JUST A LITTLE BIT LONGER. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN AND WOULD STILL BE A GREAT MINI-SERIES, WHY HASN'T IT BEEN DONE YET
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I have read Review: Both the characters and the marvelous descriptions of
life and architecture in the XII century gripped me, more
so as I am an architect.
I tried to read it slower as I approached the end, so as to
make it last a little longer, stretching the pleasure of
being inmersed in such an interesting "world".
Rating: Summary: Quite simply, my favorite book, period. Review: This book has been impossible to put down, on several occasions. I have read it about once a year since it came out, and have found it as hard to put down the third and forth times as the first
Rating: Summary: One of my top 5 all time favorite novels Review: A brilliant story set in England during the middle ages, it follows the life
and times of a master stone mason and his family as they work to build a new
cathederal. As the story unfolds, the reader learns many facinating details
about how ordinary people, royalty, monks and bishops lived in those times. The plot is filled with many interesting twists and turns. Out of the thousands
of books I've read over the years, this one is in my top 5 - check it out, you
won't be disappointed! Another great read in this genre is "When Christ and his Saints Slept" by Sharon Penman.
Rating: Summary: An excelent read, really entertaining Review: This book has it all, history, romance, politics, believable characters and a great plot. If you are interested in English life in the 12th. century, then this is the book for you. I could not put it down
Rating: Summary: Good story, and provides insight into 12th centrury England Review: A very enjoyable and readable tale centered around the
building of a cathedral in 12th century England. The story
takes place in the shadow of palace intrigue, as two factions
battle to be King. Provides insight into the political
structure in the days of kings and earls, and lets you
understand what it was like to live then. And as the cathedral rises, you can see the trial and error that led
to the building techniques needed for the great cathedrals.
One of my all time favorites. I'd love to find other good novels of the same era. Any suggestions?
Rating: Summary: I tried, I really tried Review: Perhaps it's not fair to write a review for a book you have not finished reading, so my apologies to Mr. Follett. I have always enjoyed Medieval history and the architecture of cathedrals has always fascinated me. I picked this book up with the expectation that I would be enthralled from the first page. But I wasn't. The story just didn't work for me and one of the primary reasons was one already mentioned here by another reviewer: The characters are just too modern, especially in their speech. Would individuals during the Middle Ages have actually used the expression "go to hell" or "thanks, anyhow?" These aspects of the dialogue made it difficult for me to get through the remainder of the book. Mr. Follett does a good job of recreating the atmosphere of the Medieval period but it's as if his characters have time-traveled from a later date. It just didn't work for me at all.
