Rating: Summary: Follet takes you there! A big hook right up front. Review: I have read "Pillars" 4 times. Each reading brings deeper appreciation for the absolutely dead-on vision which Follet uses to construct the backdrop for this truly monumental narrative. The historical setting is portrayed not in the fantastic "Camelot" tradition, but in an accurate description of the primitive lives led by even the aristocracy. The bleak subsistence experienced by most inhabitants of 11th century is described with vivid detail. Absolutely the most engaging novel of the past 20 years. There is nothing like it. Promise.
Rating: Summary: a modern classic Review: I have read this book 3 or 4 times, and like a fine wine it only gets better over time. This is easily the masterpiece of all Ken Follett's work to date, and the novel is a tapestry of fascinating characters, woven together in a surprising and satisfying way. It is one I will want in hardback so it will last for generations.
Rating: Summary: This was, by far, the best book that I have ever read. Review: The first line of this book hooked me. I read "Pillars of the Earth" and was absolutely miserable when I reached the end. I wanted to live on with the characters; I fell in love with Jack. Having read 4 other Ken Follett books, I can honestly say that he is my favorite author. I must add, though, that he'll never duplicate "Pillars of the Earth". Actually, he's such a great writer that he'll never need to and never tries. The book was excellent and I loved it!!!
Rating: Summary: Ken Follet knows how to write characters. Review: Ken Follet, is, in my view, the BEST character writer of these days. He can captivate you with just the thoughts of his characters, and wanting you to know more and more. You just can't stop finding out about these people.
Rating: Summary: Read it soon! It's brilliant! Review: For several years now, many people have told me I should read Ken Follett's 'Pillars of the Earth.' They said I would be amazed... that it was an outstanding achievement... yada, yada, yada. Well, I finally broke down and jumped into the 900+ page novel. I had no idea what I was in for. The shear magnitude and brilliance of this novel is truly unbelievable. It is simply one of the greatest novels of all time. Read it soon... you won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: One of if not the best book I've ever read Review: I'm halfway through my second reading of this wonderful book, having first read it 5 years ago. It's just as enjoyable and mesmerising the second time around. I can't recommend this book enough!
Rating: Summary: One of the best books ever written ! Review: This has got to be one of the best novels ever written. Pick it up and you will not be able to put it down until you finish it. I only wish that Ken Follett would write another similar novel. He brings the characters and the era to life. This is a MUST READ book!
Rating: Summary: a book you will not forgive yourself if you haven't read Review: Ken Follet has done a marvellous job of capturing the romantism of the english medieval era, mixed it with passion, honour and deception and raw politics to make a story unforgettable. It portrays the life of ordinary people of the time of Medieval England,a time when peoples only needs is to survive an to establish themselves into an ever changing land ruled by greed, deception. It starts off with a hanging and a curse and turns into a timeless story you will not forgive yourself if you miss out reading it. Ken Follet has identified a thin line between the manipulation of people through good and evil and how sometimes times they are indestinquishable and how the manipulators can also become manipulated and in the centre the people who are moved around like chess pieces on a chess board. In overview of the book Ken Follet has intertwined all these aspects and told in a marvellous story which will remain with you long after you put the book down.
