Rating: Summary: Excellent Story - Life in the 1100s Review: This was a great story. I normally don't read alot because I have trouble with books keeping my interest. WOW ..This one kept me coming back. All 978 pages of it. This is the greatest book Ive ever read...So many great characters and they were easy to keep track of..
Rating: Summary: My favorite novel. Review: I have never read a book a second time--except this one. I read it a few years ago and have lent it out to many people over the years. They all love it. I only wish I could find a similar novel. Of course Eco's "Name of the Rose" comes to mind. I have tried to find other simliar books, but they all fall short. Readers might try: Stephen Lawhead's "Byzantium" and "The Iron Lance" or Candace Robb's works. G. Moorhouse's "Sun Dancing" or P.C. Doherty's "Ghostly Murders". E. Pargetter's "Brothers of Gwynned." While many are waiting for the movie, I stumbled upon "Pillars of the Almighty", a pictorial book (ISBN 0688128122) that combines Follett's words with cathedrals from around the world. Someone should organize a tour of these great cathedrals. I would appreciate if anyone else has suggestions for similar novels.
Rating: Summary: The best epic novel I have ever read. Wonderful characters. Review: As an avid reader of historical fiction and non-fiction, I approached this book with doubts. I discovered here, a beautiful and eloquent prose which was also exciting and engaging. I pray for the day that Follett writes the needed sequel. I fell so in love with his characters and his descriptions of the time and place that I crave a sequel. Please, Ken, give us more of this!
Rating: Summary: A classic already! Review: I hope that Follett continues to write more books that take place in medieval times because this one was absolutely incredible! I'm sure to read this one over and over...you won't regret reading it!
Rating: Summary: A Breathtaking Novel Review: Every once in a while, I check the reviews of this book to make sure it's getting five stars. That should tell you something right there... no, not that I have too much time on my hands. :) This is a truly amazing book. If you react to it like I did, you'll read parts that will absolutely make your jaw drop. You'll go through a whole range of emotions... especially for the characters. Some you'll love; some you'll hate. I've even seriously considered naming future children for characters in the book. With all the other reviews, it's pretty obvious that this book is something special. If you're looking for something new to read, dive into this. You won't need to come up for air until the end. And, for those of you who have just finished the book.... BREATHE!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Awesome, can't put it down Review: First got this book on audio tape on a long trip.Had to drive an extra 20 miles around the block to finish it and then had to have the book itself!! Recommend it highly!!
Rating: Summary: It teaches you a few lessons about mankind ie good and evil Review: I actually had to contact Ken Follett to ask him what inspired him to write such a masterpiece. It was about 900 pages but I didn't want to stop. For people who've often wondered what life was like in the middle ages, you must read this. If you love this, you should also try "a place called freedom" by the same writer. It's just as good as this.
Rating: Summary: One of the best Historical books I have read Review: I just could not put this book down. The description of the particular times and people were outstanding. The whole book came alive to me I felt like I was actually apart of the "family"
Rating: Summary: a facinating view of life, surviveal in a turbulant era Review: I have read this treasure several times. The manner in which the story line is intertwined with the historical backdrop is facinating. The charaters are so very real and familiar that you ache for a sequil of some sort just to see how their lives come out. One of the prevelent quetions presented in the book, regarding relieous doctrin vs. living needs, is one which presists even today. This book lead me to further reading regarding it's times. If one is so inclined, try "When Christ and His Saints Were Sleeping" by S.K Penmen. As you read you will expect Prior Phillip or Richard or William to appear, such is the impression Pillars will make upon you. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Totally Out of this world Review: This book is not only capitivating its totally overwhelming, such detail, the most moving book i've read. Read it five times already. Still the most outstanding book. I cant praise the story or author enough !!!!! This is a definite MUST read for anyone with a desire to be totally moved like never before. Still the most incredible author!!!
