Rating: Summary: Know where your children (and) your mothers are Review: Alex Kava has taken FBI/ATF standoff tragedies and written a compeling fictional story about a religious cult headed up by a character insisting on being called FATHER. Father is actually a miserable but fairly predictable pervert who preys on the lonely and disenfranchised. The story opens with a shootout in a cabin in Massachusetts where members of the cult are holed up and the FBI is trying to talk them out. The leader passes out sucicide pills, and all but one of the six die. One FBI agent is fatally wounded.FBI Special Agent Maggie O'Dell is assigned to the case and as she begins her investigation, two murdered girls are discovered that seem to be linked somehow to Everett's church which is recruiting new members daily. As the story unfolds it is easy to assume that Everett is somehow behind the murders. Most of the characters, in the story, however have deep secrets or ghosts that they are battling including Agent O'Dell. Maggie's mother turns up a member of the cult and in danger. Maggie and her mother have had a difficult relationship since the death of Maggie's father. With each murder there is a rally being held. There are surprises as each character finally ties in to a relationship with members of the cult. We first met O'Dell in A Perfect Evil when she solved a case, and met Nick Morelli. She is a likable character with a lot of baggage including a controlling soon-to-be ex-husband and a past with Morelli that she can't come to grips with. O'Dell and Morelli worked well together. Hopefully in books to come they will get back together. The Soul Catcher is a good read.
Rating: Summary: Soul Catcher Review: Alex Kava is a terrific writer and her books are great. The characters and action keep me riveted!! Two problems: I wish she'd write faster so I'd have a book a week plus once I pick up one of her books I know the housework and sleeping are going right down hill!!! Looking forward to her future writings. Also the service from the used book ordering dept. is extremely efficient.
Rating: Summary: Where was Nick?! Review: I admit, I liked the book. It was interesting- plenty of blood and characters to make it interesting. I enjoyed the romace between Tully and Gwen (what little of it there was) but WHERE was the romance between Nick and Maggie? There were only a couple of mentions of him at all and that was one of the best parts of her first couple of books. I am not into religion and find the whole idea of cults only somewhat interesting. Still, it was a good read. I enjoy the whole mystery aspect and there were a few twists at the end which made it worth my while.
Rating: Summary: Agree with Most Reviews- A Letdown Review: I agree with most of the other reviewers that this was a bit of a letdown after the first two books. Much more predictable and less suspenseful. The romance between Nick and Maggie is untouched in the novel, and I was really looking forward to it unraveling more. I haven't read the fourth book yet, but hopefully it is more like the first two.
Rating: Summary: Good thriller Review: I enjoyed the book but I kept feeling that Maggie is an emotion-less character. I like Tully better and see endless opportunities with his characters. I also missed Nick Morelli in this book - hopefully we will see him again!
Rating: Summary: All 3 of her books Review: I have read all 3 books. All very good and well written. Good job Alex....
Rating: Summary: NOT THE ALEX KAVA READ I USUALLY GET Review: I have to say.... I am really disappointed in this third outting. Every August I wait until Ms. Kava's books are out and this one was like no other wait. Unfortunately, it was not worth the wait. I fell inlove with Ms. Kava's two previous novels (A Perfect Evil and Split Second- both 5 star and above novels). Imagine my disappoinment trying to get through this book. Took me a week and a 1/2. Normally her books take a maximum of 3 days with me. Maggie was a lush in this book with such a wall around her, you almost didn't care for her. And Greg!!!!! Get rid of him. Its a no-child divorce that should've been done with at the end of the last book. Heck, she has enough of her own money, so whats the hold up? I want more NICK MORELLI. This is too long of a tease. And the plot just seemed to drag on when I knew who the killer was half way through. Still, I eagerly await any other book Ms. Kava writes. She is on my list of faves and I am not giving up on her yet!
Rating: Summary: FUN AND FAST Review: I must admit to have enjoyed this one, with reservations. First, The book is a quick read and a fun read...nice to just set and let the author spin a good tale and go with it at times.
The plot was intriquing and characters well done. The profanity might have been a bit over done, but as to that, from what I hear from the young now days, it was pretty accurate...I just got a bit tired of it is all. All in all I have to recommend this one...maybe not actually buy it, but it would be a good one to check from the library.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed - A predictable thriller Review: I was really looking forward to this new book. I usually wait for the paperback - but after reading her first two novels, I bought the hardback. The story start with a standoff with the FBI and the "group". The story starts off in classic Kava style. Quick, lots of tension and keeps you turning the page. And then... it goes very slow. I knew (not guessed) the ending at around page 150 (out 300). Not much of a suspense thriller. Overall, a ok read - wait for the paperback if you are a fan. Or just wait for her next book. I have not given up on her but was disappointed with this effort
Rating: Summary: Where was Nick?! Review: I was very impressed and throughly enjoyed Alex Kava's first two novels. Not so with her third book. There was character jumping from chapter to chapter, which made for choppy reading. The identity of the killer is apparent half way through the book. Thank goodness I didn't spent the money on the hardback edition.
