Summary: WOW
Review: I'm an avid Nora Roberts fan, I tend to read any of her books that I can get my hands on! I had a long day of traveling today, so I picked up this book in the airport and read most of it during a 3 hour layover.

The basic story is that uber thief Douglas Lord got double crossed by his boss and in return, double crossed the boss and stole some papers with information leading to a treasure in Madagascar. While on the run, he hooks up with wealthy ice cream heiress Whitney MacAllister. The two of them head out on an adventure to find the treasure, all the while outwitting Doug's old boss and his goons.

While this book doesn't come close to Nora's more recent stuff, it's still a fun and entertaining read. Some reviewers didn't like Whitney much, but I found her to be the most interesting character in the entire book. I never could predict what might come out of her mouth!

The ending of Hot Ice was where I think this book fell apart. I hesitate to say too much for those who might still want to read it, but it seems anticlimactic. I also felt that while the two characters had an attraction to each other, there was never the romance and love aspect - so I also found that part of the ending a little hard to swallow.

Even with its flaws, the book read quickly and was fun. It made my layover and long flights fly by, I could hardly put it down.

Summary: Unlikeable Heroine
Review: I'm usually very flexible with fictitious characters, I give them a lot of credit as they should be as human as we are. I am normally very sympathetic and seldom get bothered by the shortcomings of storybook characters.
However with this one, I just couldnt get rid of the nagging feeling that Whitney is the most unsavoury heroine I've ever come across in the hundreds of romance novels, poor, good and the best, i've ever read.
Throughout the book I try to sympathise with her but I just cannot help feeling that she is too ruthlessly calculative, and too over the top with the whole feminism I'm-just-as-good-as-Douglas/men attitude. I can't stand how smug and confident she is about her money and her looks. I can't find anything in her at all that I like and the parts about her 'feeling for victims' seem forced. And imagine trudging through the forest and still worrying about how 'vogue' she should look. There are many times such attributes can be overlooked but in these case there was nothing else to like about her.
Douglas is okay, I like his flawedness but I can't stand how much he puts up with her.
Sorry Ms. Roberts, I tried, but Whitney leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Summary: Exciting, but sometimes irritating
Review: I've have read some of Ms. Roberts work and I have enjoyed them. This one. I want to ring the heroine's neck at times. Whitney is a spoiled little brat. I really like Doug. He's rugged, strong and down to earth. I don't know what he sees in Whitney. She's constantly writing down his charges in her little account book. I would have ditched her the first opportunity that I had. Killers or no killers. She just rubs me the wrong way. Everything has to be her way. 85$ for a pair of pants. Come on. I would not bring a 85$ worth of pants into a rain forest or out walking. No, I would like a better character than Miss Priss. Doug I would take any day.

Summary: Hot Ice
Review: Im a big Nora Roberts fan. Every book is a whole new adventure, this one is not an exception. This story keeps you on the run from the beggining to the end. Whitney and Doug are two incredibly strong character, they challenge each other and take each other on the same ground and at equal levels even when both of them have oppossite backgrounds. You get so deep in the story, feel the chace and want to find the "tresure" as much as them. Its a story that will keep you on your toes. I loved every pages. So go ahead and pick it up!

Summary: Early Nora Roberts - Obviously!
Review: It is SO obvious how much Nora Roberts has grown as a writer since she wrote this story in 1987. Usually, I can't put her books down and get through them in 1-2 days. This one took closer to 2 weeks. The characters were not instantly likeable, the plot didn't grab me, and it just seemed like your typical fill-in-the-outline standard romance. I was rather disappointed

Summary: Very disappointed Nora Roberts fan
Review: Nora Robert is one of my favorite authors and I usually can't put her books down. The only thing that kept me reading this book was knowing that it is a Nora Roberts book and it would have to get better. It didn't.

The characters are unsympathetic and it's hard to care what happens to them.

Nora Roberts has used thieves as heroes in other books, but the characters are charming and its fiction, so it works. It didn't work in this book. Doug is a thief who often gambles away what he steals. There is nothing romantic about him. It was mentioned a few times that Doug would sometimes check into a hotel for a week and rob the other guests. Every time this was mentioned I couldn't help but think of the poor tourist who worked hard all year to go away for two weeks and relax. Then, his first day in a foreign country, his wallet is stolen with his cash, his credit cards, and his ATM card. He'll get his cards replaced, but they'll be waiting for him at home. Meanwhile, he's traveled across an ocean and has no means to do anything but sit in his hotel room and watch TV. I really tried to like the characters, but Doug just came off as cruel.

Whitney is shown, repeatedly, to be upset and concerned about the innocent people who get killed as she and Doug go after their treasure. However, she has no concern for Doug's victims - rather, she's impressed by what he does.

If this were my first Nora Roberts book, it would also be my last. I own most of her books and there are no others I actively disliked - and just two I was passive about (Hidden Star and Captive Star, I liked Secret Star).

Summary: I'll pass
Review: Of all the books by Nora Roberts, this one (and maybe one more) are the worst! I could barely finish it! Please, don't write another like it!

Summary: The First of Many
Review: The first book I've read by Nora Roberts, Hot Ice surely has sold me on this talented author- understandably, a best seller. Through fast paced story telling, multi-dimensional characters and exceptionally detailed settings, Ms. Roberts weaves a tale of adventure, romance and suspense. If you're looking to get swept away into a real page turner, I highly recommend this entertaining, well written book.
