Rating: Summary: Page Turning Action Review: EJD does it again...For those looking for reality, I suggest: stop reading fiction! This book is definitely destined for the big screen. EJD writes with such skill and the imagery he creates is so vivid. I enjoy reading EJD because of his talent, attention to detail, his ability to draw symmetry between the past and present, his artistic blend of fiction and fantasy...All of it just jumps off the pages! TP is definitely different than his other works, but the quality of his writing just gets better...I love the way he brings cameos of characters from his other works! Two thumbs up, Eric!
Rating: Summary: Oh, What A Change. Review: This is one of my favorite authors, but he threw me a curve with his writing style on this one. It's a good book, but I found the others much easier to read. It was a struggle for me to finish it, unlike his previous books. However, I wouldn't hesitate to buy any books by this author because three stars for him is just a comparison of his previous work.
Rating: Summary: Excellent As Usual Review: I am a huge fan of his work and this was no less. I was very intrigued as to what was going to happen to the main character, kept me coming back for more. Mr. Dickey never loses your attention. An excellent read you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Thieves Paradise Review: I thought the book was a good read. It shows how multi-talented EJD really is. He can pretty much right about anything. As for the reader from Jan. 18, 2003, relax, it's fiction. He explains Dante's character and how he has an old soul and the people he dealt with were much older than he was. So, some of the lingo used would be conducive for his backdrop. People pray for rain but complain when there's a flood. Anyway, I would recommend this book however, I would recommend reading his other books first.
Rating: Summary: Nothing Good From Scamz Review: Eric Jerome Dickey did a 360 degree turn around with Between Lovers and flipped the script again with Thieves Paradise. I enjoyed this book despite the stale jokes. EJD shows that he can vary his topics and maintain a reader's interest. Thieves Paradise is about two characters, Dante and Pam, always trying to get ahead by running game on folks. After serving several years in a correctional facility, Dante doesn't want to return for any reason. Due to a poor economy and the need to pay bills, he's willing to resort to quick and complex scams to make ends meet. Learning that Pam has done her own dirty deeds in the past and her need to make additional money to support her "child", Dante introduces here to the master of scams, Scamz (no creativity needed with this name). Scamz serves as the "willing to do crime" equal opportunity employer. If your game is tight and he can use you in his operation he'll hire you. Because Scamz sees Dante as a "young Scamz" he adds Pam and Dante's friend, Jackson to his payroll. His elaborate scams bring Pam and Dante closer romantically and add tension to Dante and Jackson friendship. The intensity of the crimes, heat between Pam and Dante, and Jackson dealings, shows EJD's talent of combining life's challenges. Characters: Dante - former felon that is initially captivated by a waitress named, Pam because of her looks and sophistication. He's even more captivated once she runs her first con and he benefits from it. Pam - a 35+ wannabe actress that believes if she can get enough money to get a tummy tuck she will be as large as Vivica A Fox or Halle Berry Scamz - as his name implies is the contact man for every big money making scam that the characters get in. Scamz is well-rounded, well-dressed, well-versed overall simply well-off. There's a mutually admiration between him and Dante that allows him to slightly bend his rules for Dante. Jackson - Dante's, big brother/father figure/best friend that is dealing with expensive baby mama drama. Despite having marketable skills, he's unable to get a job and must live off his girlfriend. Jackson is overly emotional at times that truly plays on Dante's emotions, but leaves Jackson behaving erratic. Big Slim - Know all, tell nothing bar/pool hall owner with a sad past that makes his pride the most valuable thing to him and he's willing to fight for it. His experience helps Dante to mature and see beyond Scamz world and the trouble that it brings.
Rating: Summary: Just Okay Review: Too many jokes that were semi-funny, too many descriptions, etc. I didn't particularly care for any of the characters. This book was not realistic. In reality, Pam would not be working 3 jobs, or hanging out with Dante, if she was attractive, as described in the book. Too many legit big money guys in L.A. would date her, even at her age. She would just date older men. Plus Pam was an actress. Actresses, even struggling actresses hang out in certain circles, not places like Little J's, or Bistro 880. Bistro 880 is near Compton. Pam would have been trying to make moves with the Hollywood crowd. Pam was a waitress at the Ha Ha, a comedy club. She would have been dating an upcoming comedian, not Dante. Second, Robin could do better than Jackson also. Robin was flying around, and would not be sticking around so long for the babymama drama. Flight attendants meet a lot of men. Robin would not be settling for a man with no job, no license, no job prospects, back child support, old, and everything else. The language was outdated. What 25 year old describes clothes as "threads", and "cops a squat"? This book should have been tightened up. This book was definitely a fantasy written by a man. It was a man's dream of being broke, involved in crime, with fine women still interested. That isn't how it really works in L.A. Sorry. I'd like to see it from a woman's perspective.
Rating: Summary: GOOD BOOK Review: EJD ALWAYS GIVE HIS AUDIENCE A GOOD READ. BECAUSE THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT FROM HIS OTHER NOVELS, THE AVERAGE EJD FAN WILL BE CAUGHT OFF GUARD. INSTEAD OF RUNNING GAME FOR SEX, THESE CHARACTERS ARE RUNNING GAME FOR MONEY. THE CHARACTERS ARE DEVELOPED WELL, BUT THE THEME ISN'T REALISTICALLY RELATED TO LOS ANGELES STREET LIFE. IT WOULD BE MORE BELIEVABLE IF THE SETTING WAS KANSAS CITY OR SOMETHING.
Rating: Summary: Good book...terrible reader!!! Review: I enjoyed Thieves' Paradise. It was a nice change of pace from the author's usual theme. However, I must complain about the reader. Bill Andrew Quinn's voice was all wrong for this book. His voice was annoying and took something away from an otherwise enjoyable book. Thieves' Paradise was worthy of three stars, but because of Mr. Quinn's terrible reading, I gave it two stars.
Rating: Summary: Carol *Brenda C&B Books Distribution Review: Eric Jerome Dickey never fails us we sell African American books and believe me Eric's books are always a sell-out. However, I must confess we just couldn't stock enough copies of this new book. Thieves' Paradise hit top sellers status from May - August, dropped off and picked up again in the beginning of November. This was a different twist in writing for Eric and his readers enjoyed the change of writing style and they keep ordering this book. Eric, keep witing so we can keep selling your books. Rating: Summary: Long Awaited!!! Review: I hadn't read an Eric Jerome Dickey book in a while, and when I saw this book I became very excited. I expected to get the thrill that I normally get from Dickey, and I was not let down. This book has so much in it that we can all relate to. Money problems, friendship issues, baby mama drama, cheating, and more. Dickey is just a great writer, and I look forward to his next book!
