Rating: Summary: Totally different Review: This book was better than I could have ever imagined. I was looking for Mr. Dickey to talk about the life of a hustler who found love and changed. I did not expect the book to end as it did. The ending was a total surprise for me. I was happy to Mr. Dickey allowed Dante' to change for the better and finally do something for himself. Dante' reminds of people that I encounter on a regular basis, they don't have a bad heart but they do what they need to do in order to survive. All the trials and tribulations Dante' had experienced he still had a desire to go to college and achieve his goals. I never would have thought that by Pam telling Dante' that saying about fraternities would make him want to pledge. Well done Mr. Dickey. I must say I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Flipping the script Review: I couldn't wait for this book to be released. However, I was totally surprised because this book is VERY different then what I'm used to reading from Eric. Thieves Paradise started off sllllow but did pick up pace near the middle. It's still a good read! I've read "ALL" of Eric Jerome Dickey's books and look forward to the next. Keep up the good work Eric!
Rating: Summary: fresh characters from a remarkable talent Review: EJD never stops amazing me. Most writers tend to write to the same stories over and over, merely changing the faces of the characters, at times the location, but EJD continues to create fresh characters and challanging situations with every novel. It amazes me how a writer can go from creating Between Lovers to doing Thieve's Paradise, and both have their own flavor and plot. By the comments I read on the web and out on his web page, I think too many readers come from the school of harlequin and are busy looking for romance in novels and are sleeping on the real writing in his novels. I take my bra off to you, EJD.
Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL,HUMOROUS,AND TOUCHING Review: RIGHT ON ,ANOTHER WONDERFUL WRITTEN BOOK. I LOVED THE STORY LINE AND THE ENDING. MR.DICKEY IS AN DELIGHTFUL STORY TELLER. I LOOK FORWARD FOR HIS NEXT BOOK. IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS WONDERFUL WORK OF ART. BUY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: One of His Best Review: Dickey went above and beyond his normal storylines with this one. It has a nice mix of suspense, erotica, and comedy all rolled into this single novel. Anyone who is a follower of Dickey's work will be pleasantly surprised with how this one turned out. I highly recommend this to anyone.
Rating: Summary: MISSING THAT SOMETHING SPECIAL Review: I really enjoyed EJD reading in the past, however, this one was not the case. He usually grabs me the first page and keeps me but this book was slow and not very exciting. The only thing that made me finish reading the book is because of my history reading all of EJD books and I know someone who reminds me of the character Scamz.
Rating: Summary: A con game left steamless Review: Scamz and Dante are like father and son who con people out of their money. Their friend Jackson, because of baby mama drama can't seem to get it together. I should have borrowed this book from the library. Three stars.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: After reading this book, I can truly say that there is an art to being a criminal. A life of crime is not all that it is cracked up to be. Mr. Dickey took me into a life of a thief and showed me that the life they live is not a life that I would consider glamorous. I don't care how easy the money is. You can't even trust the one you are in love with. Yes, the money seems to come easy with the scams that are run, but the life is not easy by no means. I commend Mr. Dickey with all the research and efforts that he put forth to create such a fantastic novel. This book is a great page-turner. I kept wanting more. In this book you will find humor, love, sex, friendship, and respect. What did "Siskel and Ebert" use to say, I give it a thumbs up...
Rating: Summary: A Different Story Review: After reading most of EJ Dickey's book, I was beginning to get a little bored with his themes. He seemed to be doing the Baskin Robbin's technique with his books---31 flavors of the same thing, but with Thieves' Paradise he flipped the script and brought us something fresh and exciting. This was so different from anything he's ever written and it was wonderful. Dante is a man struggling to stay on the straight and narrow when life keeps handing him near-death blows. He's sympathetic towards women and anyone with a hardluck story. But it's that sympathy that's gets him into some serious trouble. The story spans a small piece of time in his life (3 days, I think), but in that time his life irrevocably changes. Dickey shows us that sometimes we have to make hard choices in life to stay afloat. However, when we choose to make those certain decisions we have to be man or woman enough to accept and understand the consequences. I think Dickey did an excellent job of giving us insight into Dante and his motivations. The only flaw I found with the story was the limited insight we gained on the other characters. They were all major players, but we didn't get to understand their motivations. Dickey revealed very little about Scamz who was a major player in the story. Plus we were never given any background about the Dante/Jackson relationship. Where'd they meet? What was the basis of the friendship? Maybe I skipped that part trying to finish the book. If I did, please someone out there in bookland let me know. However, despite that one flaw, I thought Thieves' Paradise was a great read.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining read! Review: This is vintage Dickey. I had become a little worried after his last book that he was slipping, but Thieves' Paradise has alleviated my worries. What I liked most about the book was the change in direction, the criminal element, yet maintaining the style that has made most of his books entertaining. Definitely a strong effort. Thumbs up!
