Rating: Summary: Fabulous. Review: Normally I only read historical romance, but I had to read this because so far I've read and loved all of Julie Garwood's books. Our heroine is being hunted by a serial killer and her brother calls in the help of his friend and FBI agent. Of course they fall in love but only in the midst of an excellent story with a great plot, wonderful characters and nail biting suspense. The fight to get the killer is a page turner, with just freaky enough to make sure I couldn't put it down because I needed everything to be okay. Definately a reader, wether you're a contemporary romance fan or not!!
Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: This book is very good. It has likable characters. It's funny. And it has the same almost fairy tale charm as Mrs. Garwoods' historicals. There was a certain lack of believability when it came to the character of the "heartbreaker" himself. He's not presented clearly and the reader is given contradictory information about him. The ending seemed more like a quick wrap up and therefore rather predictable. However, for a first attempt at a contemporary novel, I think this is quite a success for Mrs. Garwood. I would love to read the sequel. If you love Garwood, you'll like this book.
Rating: Summary: a lot of suspence and some romance Review: The new Julie Garwood book is a nice surprise. Her historical romance are full of joy and love, so I didn't think she could write an effective thriller. But Ho, Was I wrong. Hertbreaker is indeed an effective suspence book, full of surprising turnes and twists. But Garwood doesn't forget her admirers and there is a lovely, althouh not very detailed, love story, and a lot of wormth between the secondary characters that makes you wish for a syqwel. The book brings the story of Nick Buchanan, a burnt out FBI agent who tries to protect his best friend's younger sister, Laurant Madden, from a crazed murderer. Just one word of caution - if you don't like suspence, try one of her historical romance because this book is real spooky at times.
Rating: Summary: Who Said It Was Bad? Review: I am sorry that I have to disagree with those who found this book unworthy. This is the first Julie Garwood book that I read and it's great. It had all the right elements to be a page turner, and it was also an easy read. The heroine was strong and smart (read the part of how she made use of what she had available as weapon). Other characters like the 2 neighbours, the herione's brother and "the priest" were lovely and funny. Some thought the FBI stuff in the book was childlike or not intense, but remember this is romance and mystery & thrillers too. It was absolute pleasure reading and one would get hooked without knowing it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to her new one, Mercy. Knowing this is JG 1st contemporary novel, I'd say she made it and should keep writing so.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Review: I borrowed heartbreaker from the library when it first came out, and couldn't get past the first chapter. I bought the paperback when it was released in September and couldn't get past the first chapter. But I have been ill the last couple of days and really had a chance to sit down and read it last night and it is very enjoyable, albeit completely different from anything that I would expect from Julie Garwood, since it is a contemporary thriller. Once I got over the fact that I was reading a Julie Garwood book, and chucked those expectations outside I really enjoyed the plot and Laurant and Nick were an appealing couple. My one real gripe about the book is that she named 3 important characters in the book four letter N names which were just unnecessarily confusing at first. The secondary characters were all very engaging and I think that this first book was a set-up for a long running series of thrillers based on the group of special agents that Nick belongs to. Overall it was a great book and I look forward to picking up Mercy - the next book in the series once it is released in paperback.
Rating: Summary: I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it. Review: I don't have any of the complaints other reviewers had, and this was my first book by Julie Garwood. I have never been interested in historical romance, I like the contemporary and this book did not let me down. It did not have the detailed gore that some books do, and I enjoyed relationship developing between Nick and Laurant. I too am looking forward to a book about Noah, I hope we get one. All in all, it was a great book and I am looking forward to starting Mercy.
Rating: Summary: Don't be angry... Review: First of all, I'd like to say that I am not trashing Julie Garwood. I just am not sure she should be writing suspense. This was all together a too delicate, almost squeamish handling of the "serial killer" angle. If Ms. Garwood was reluctant to handle the gore, then she should have picked a different type of killer. This is a dainty book, better suited to Victorian mystery than modern suspense/thrillers. I'm afraid that the character's relationships suffered from the lack of actual tension. Nick and Laurent never seemed to me to be real characters, and their romance was wishy-wash at best. She lacked strength, conviction, and background information. As a counterpart, Nick was a little better, but there was still that lack of a strong past. It was hinted at, but never seemed to play a role in his life, and made me feel as if I was missing a previous book that explained some of these details. Tommy was intereresting, but he seemed to fade into the background as the romance started taking shape, and I don't think he ever recovered his initial strength as a character. I did like Noah, and I would like to see him in his own book. All of the characters seemed very static and flat, and the dialogue lacked snap and sizzle. All in all, if you can find it used, and have plenty of spare time, do read this one. If not, skip it and stick with Garwood's historicals.
Rating: Summary: A disappointing "thriller." Review: I'm a longtime Garwood fan, but this book was a disappointment. The "bad guy" character was unconvincing and there was very little of the classic Garwood romance wound into the story. It was either a bad romance novel or a very bad murder mystery -- take your pick. Garwood should stick to the historical romances, her true forte.
Rating: Summary: Heartbreaker Review: I liked it a lot. It is my first suspense book, and truth be told, I only tried it because it was penned by julie garwood. I usually read romance, and since this was romantic suspense and written by julie garwood, I knew that even if i did not get captivated by the suspense, the romance would not let me down because i know garwood's history on that. And i was very surprised.. it was wonderful.. just the right amount of suspense and romance. She has turned me around that i'm now looking for other notworthy authors who write romantic suspense... but i doubt anyone writes it as well as garwood. can't wait to read "Mercy" .. and can't wait for garwood to write about Noah .. i really hope she does.
